Thanks - it works! I just repaired my 9' fly rod with a break in the first section. Had to find something thincker than a nail to fit but it seems to work well.
Just done this today. only thing I done different is put a coat of clear over the nylon and cured it under a uv light .Turned pretty nice glad to have my rod back .
I used fiberglass sticks. They sell them in different sizes at Harbor Freight. $8 for a small pack. Worked perfectly with thread wraps and Epoxy. Now time to go test it out on some big Pike 😎🤙🏽
Sir I HAVE MAD RESPECT FOR YOU. I BROKE MY ROD TIP HEADING OUT THE DOOR FOR A TOURNAMENT THIS WEEKEND I COULD CRY. I SAW YOUR VIDEO AND WENT TO WORK. I HAD A MICRO ROD YOU KNOW REALLY THIN AT THE TOP. I GOT A SHAKEYHEAD HOOK THAT WOULD FIT CUT IT AND WENT TO WORK. I FEEL MUCH BETTER NOW. YOUR VIDEO SAVE MY HOME BECAUSE IT WAS GOING TO HELL TO TALK TO ME FROM NOW TO THE WEEKEND 😆 🤣 😂 😹 😆 SO GLAD GOD LEAD ME TO YOUR VIDEO AND TO NEVER GIVE UP. THANK YOU 😊 🙏 😊 🙏 😊
Awsome job and thankyou for the tip as I got a awsome shimano rod and reel for Xmas and snapped the end off trying to land a big flathead so much appreciated sir 🙏
I've thoroughly enjoyed your knot tying videos!😊 I started building rods (Professionally), in mid 70s (I think 1976), and I don't mean building a fly rod, as those are ridiculously easy to put together!! I'm talking about boat rods with roller-guides and pack-rods (4 or 6 piece high quality rods), out of a 1 Piece Blank, meaning that I had to make my own ferrules!! And then I'd do anything from "perfect" Half & Half Diamond wraps that took 8 to 10 hours non stop!! By half and half, I mean half the Diamonds would be one color and the other half another. And many more like the U.S. flag with the stars and all, or Eagles etc. and it would take many wraps of thread to create. At any rate, the rod with the Nail would have one heck of Dead Section!! This of course would be no problem with even a Trophy Bass, but certainly not with a Big Steelhead or any fresh Chinook/King Salmon (fresh out of the Pacific Ocean)!! I still catch a good number of Kings going to 40 pounds or larger!! Again I can land any Bass with just about any rod or hand-line!! Someone else mentions the use of broken rod pieces, which makes a lot more sense!!
I'm wanting to make a 1 piece rod into a 3 piece and I was brainstorming ways to make it fit into itself, it's hard to find info online about it that I understand. Maybe you can link me a video to help. I was just wondering if using apoxy and peices of another blank to make a stopper for how far the peice will insert and using 20lb braid+apoxy to keep the blank from splitting out under load bc I'm going to need to do significant stock removal to the ID on the female end for the male end to fit. Is the male end filled with fiber/apoxy or is it just capped off. I have so many questions about how a broke 22 year old can make ferrules in his garage but I doubt you'll see my questions bc your comment is a year old , worth a try tho lol
Good Evening My Friend blueparay, Thank You for your detailed video on "How To Repair A Broken Fishing Rod." I to have experience a broken rod or two in my 35 year quest in fishing multiple spicese of fish! I to once implied the same techinque to repair a broken rod that a BEST FRIEND gave me. 🙂I Treasure the fact that YOU took the Time and EFFORT to Divise such a Detailed Video. Thank you once again my Fishing Friend for Being So Understanding and Compassionate for Our Sport of Fishing and the Millions of Viewers that watch Your Program! You are a TRUE Inspiration to US ALL!! 🙂MAY GOD "BLESS U & U'r Familiy! Sincerely, Mr. Carl Joseph Gwizdala aka "DESPERADO." 🙂
I've fixed a couple of fly rod tips in a similar way. Since the rod is very narrow at the tip, a 2" sewing needle works well as the insert (you might need to clip off the eyelet). Sewing needles seem to have enough strength and stiffness, plus you can find one in a diameter that will fit snug enough. Alternatively, you can get loop end wire shafts from a lure making supply store which are made from stiff, springy steel (I used .035"). Also, you'll need to add at least 1 but preferably 2 sewing needles (or wire shafts) on the outside of the break as splints. Glue in the insert then wrap the splints and spread a thin layer of epoxy over the threads. I use dental floss because its strong and flat. Waxed or unwaxed floss works as long as you coat with epoxy. Put the splints on the sides of break and not along the top/bottom. This way there is less of a bump along the bottom where the fly line runs. I have mixed results as to whether the action and accuracy of the rod is affected with dry flies (I notice no issue with nymphs) but at minimum you can fish until you order a new tip and then you'll always have a backup tip.
today my fishing rod was broken, it was very similar to the broken position like in the video, now I found this video as a solution, thank you very much
just bought a BNM super sensitive and broke first time I used it. will try to take it back but if not this is a super solution. will use epoxy instead of super glue
Outstanding video! worked great! my fly rod is good as new after my wife put up the window on it. I used a brad, which I filed to a taper, and JB ClearWeld. Upholstery thread, black. Thank you, thank you.
Thanks its happened to me so many times and I would just trash it or in my boat getting snapped on brush going to a favorite spot and bam . Now I'll put this in my tackle box, thanks again.
_Solid metal placed in the rod can make the part on the rod connection stiff and easily broken due to strong pressure by the fish, i used a fiber stick from amazon for only 2 dollars for 100 cm_
Never use a nail in a fly rod. You need to use carbon fibre with similar bending properties and a matching taper. The action will be affected and it will inevitably break otherwise.
I just bought a rod online that showed up busted like this. I was going to just return it, but I think I'll consider it an investment in self sufficiency and just go ahead and figure out how to fix it instead. Thanks for the inspiration.
Good idea...I have an old rod which I loved, but got broken by a friend accidentally stepping on it. He bought me a new rod, although it's not the same as my old favourite. I might give this a go, although it may affect the action of it. Worth trying though. 👍
If needs must it’s a solid repair but it would create a flat spot in the blank and affect the action of it when put under strain. I cannot fault you for saving your rod though👍
I’ve used a piece of another broken rod to insert as the splint between the broken pieces or have slid the broken pieces into the splint instead of using a nail. When gluing the pieces together with super glue, if you sprinkle baking soda into the wet super glue it will instantly set up as hard as a rock and fill the gaps between the rod pieces. I also use 2-part clear epoxy on the rod wrap threads instead of super glue. I have also shortened the rod until I got the lower section large enough for the broken tip section to slip inside it before gluing.
I have several pieces of broken rods that I save to get a good fit with a taper like the rod I'm repairing . I use fine steel wool to ruff the rod before applying epoxy at the gap and to cover the thread . Great job ....looks like new ,and actually is stronger than new .
I do the same using rod repair thread and also just ordinary polyester sewing thread as well. I have bought carbide rod pieces at 1.5mm and hollow carbide tubes at 2.00 and 2.3 mm using them to make rod tip repairs. Turned out pretty good.
I really wish I would have known this technique many years ago. After coming back from a bass fishing trip to Florida I was unloading my boat at home and my favorite rod had it's tap broken off buy the screen door closing too fast. I had tens if not even hundred of thousand cast on that rod. It was so old that they no longer made it so I could not replace it.
I hope it wasn’t a $400 rod, like the one I broke the top off of in 2 places, before I’d used it for a month! Or the $300 rod I broke in a car door a month later. Lessons learned!
same it happened when I was taking algae off of the rod and then I heard the snap noise and a bunch of tension released form the line and the rod, I looked at my rod and a foot of the rod came off and I just thought "there is no way that just snapped my rod."
Brought my 4 year old with me to the river, used the same rod since I was 16, bought a new one for bobber and egg fishing for salmon nicest rod I've had a nice 9'6 okuma guide select pro $200 or so...stepped on 😔
who hasn't found a discarded broken rod along the shore? I always gather the tip end to use sections as an insert instead of a nail. Strength is there plus the flex.
I would personally use fiberglass then epoxy that in before wrapping, something as rigid as metal seems like a bad idea in a rod and would really screw up the proper action and just lead to it breaking again.
I use a 6 to 7 inch section of a. bicycle tire spoke. So much more effective and longer giving more support to the fractured area. My dad taught me this, decades ago.
That is basically what I do to repair a break but I use a fibreglass piece off another broken rod & glue in the break. I bind over it & then if the break is close to a runner I’ll remover the runner & bind the runner in place over the break. Been successful repairs from beach rod to small spinning rods. Curious as to what glue you use here. I’ve been using 24/hr Araldite. 👍🏻👍🏻🇦🇺
the materials that are used is standard super glue and nylon thread (fishing line). the lighter is supposed to shrink the thread hot air blower will do as well. good luck
Thanks a bunch. Just broke my favorite rod, hiking through heavy Forrest, and brush. I was crushed. Jumped on RU-vid, and found this simple fix. Even looks like good meditation. But can you tell us what kind of string you're using when you wrapped the black string around it, and heat shrink it? That'd be awesome.
You can use a small diameter cord, thread, braid... I recommend nano cord Paracord .75mm This stuff is strong and has a breaking strength of around 36lbs.
He’s not heat-shrinking, he’s just burning the fuzz off of the thread for a smoother finish when he puts the glue on. The other thread is just a different color.
I have a 4pc eagle claw pack rod that has two splices and the handle replaced because the screw ring jammed so if you count the pieces off three other poles it's now a 7 PC gotta luv it I keep it one of those foam six pack carriers like a godess,,!
