@InTylerable DIY TUTORIAL LIFE HACK: DIY How-to repair a broken glass pipe, bowl, slide, stem and more! Step by step video about how to blow your broken piece back together with a propane torch.
Cool deal. I just smoothed out a fissure with my propane torch. I was cleaning it and went hot to cold to quick and pop. But thanks to this my bubbler was saved.
That is great! I'm happy It finally worked for someone! I learned from chemistry class. I learned how to work with the thin glass tubing, Realized it was the same glass as a pipe, and I kept experimenting with glass and fire untill I understood everything. ( not recommended,! RESEARCH EVERYTHING! don't be stupid! I'm lucky I have my eyes!) It is a lot of fun thou....
so I have a buckets quarts nail broke from where the bucket attaches to the rest of the glass will this work or will I need a smaller torch considering the size
@brstone2002 Thanks for the good info! I had no idea about the toxic fumes produced from blowing glass, I'm still here tho so that's good. I am obviously not a professional and really appreciate the input from someone with experience. Thanx again! -inTylerable
geoff you have to get the hole aligned when you refuse them. you could also put it on a thinner metal mandrel to make sure it doesn't close up, then pull it out when it's fused. also i'm surprised you had no cracking without a gradual cooling cycle
hey @inTylerable i have the same problem as @XryanX0012 my black leaf triple perc tipped over snapping off the middle perc off and its just laying inside the chamber still in one piece, but i came up with the idea of using a wine bottle cutter and boiling water to open my 26" 5mm bongs tube.im still waiting for the cutter in the mail but i would like to know if your propane torch method would be able to melt the tree perc back in place and after melt the tube back as well.
bought a bong today, first glass bong i ever owned, just dropped the bowl and broke it how high i got smoking on it. already fixed it with a torch it's 100% now
Would this metthod close a hole about 3millimeters thick? My piece broke at the neck of the bowl and left two very clean peices. But the hole is really small will it get hot enough to close it?
I mean he could of used some hand / arm protection ya, but Ive done the same thing to fix my glass Dabber. Great Job with the bowl man! if u blew glass... then you'd probably be kinda impressed by how smooth that seemed to have come out for some one just making a tutorial.
I have a small pipe where a little piece of glass chipped off right near the center of bowl hole and i have another one similar to the one in this video and the bottom of the bowl shattered... both in the same day!
Right on. My bf broke so many bubble bongs on me. By accident of course. I got tired of buying new ones. So thought about asking google if I can fix it myself. Thanks dude
awesome dude im about to try this haha and i expect to fail but ay its broken already right? lol awesome man thanks it never occured to me that i could fix my broken pipe simply by heating it up and patience. well thanks again im gonna go see if i can do it haha
how long would you say this whole project took to complete with the initial heating of the glass, as well as the period of time it took to get hot enough to mend back together plus cooling thanks.
I bought a new 18mm bowl and it’s airflow hole was small so after watching this I’ve burn the bowl where the flower goes and force my point honey scoop to make a hole better for air flow I burn the bowl again after for any chips
I have done a fair bit of lampworking/pipemaking myself and to me this looks like a good way of fixing your pipe without paying a hefty fee. I do not take any responsibility for you hurting yourself but I find it unlikely you will if you do this.
Have you ever smoked a piece that was repaired with JB weld or any other epoxy? You'll b tasting that shit for a month straight. And there's pretty much nothing you can do to remove that smell aside from removing the epoxy altogether. It's so bad you're gonna taste what u you're smelling. .
What do you suggest for cracks that havent broken? It's a very simple straight glass tube for concentrates and the crack is at the tip and it looks like a 1/4 of the tip is about to break off.
brush the torch over it with the tip first then move it to the inside cone and follow the crack slowly .... be sure to brush first or you might over heat too fast
so i have a pipe of similar size that i recently bought but i have 2 circular cracks going around the bowl area, is that possible to fix or should i use it till it breaks a chuck it to the trash?
Keyshaun Spratley yo Keyshaun, remember your pipe you broke 3 years ago? and you came to this video hoping you could fix it? i wonder if your life is worse than it was when you wrote this comment. it’s quite possible that you might be dead, and your comment will be here until the internet is taken offline...pretty intense.
How do you keep the glass from cracking when introducing it to the flame? I accidentally exploded glass once when trying to repair it, so obviously i need some tips.
Hey I just bought a 18" 6 arm tree perc and my Iphone fell off my table and landed ion the base and a quarter sized piece chipped off; it's one solid piece; can I fix this?
@SpFx2011 After some research about your question I found that the glass is the same it just has a chemical additive to make it glow. It should work fine. Be careful with the sculpture as it will become soft and easily deformed and i would recommend very good ventilation. I don't know what kind of toxic fumes blowing glow in the dark glass produces but better safe than sorry. Good luck. Let me know how it goes or if you have any questions.
You should be using MAPP gas instead of propane. It burns 600-800 degrees hotter, melts the glass faster and better so you know you'll have a good bond between pieces.
I actually did this on a thick sherlock I had that broke in the middle, but after I stuck it together I melted parts of a super thin piece that had broken a while ago. The next day I knocked it off my desk and it hit my guitar, and the spot I had welded together didn't break, but the cracks I got in it from heating it up too quickly did. Now it's in about 5 pieces and I'm done.
The heating and cooling causes mechanical stress in the glass, without annealing (like in a kiln), it tends to crack when cold...this may not show in small thin pieces, but the bigger/thicker they get, the worse the cracking problem will become...
What if it has a big crack on the top of it and a small hole on the bottom of the piece? Can heat fix the hole and the crack? I don't want to mess the shape of the piece because the broken part is green spider man.
@nitsuj1980 Propane burns at the perfect temperature, if you go too hot the glass will go to a liquid like consistency and be very difficult to do anything with. I've made that mistake.
@homeslicery92 Annealing glass as far as i can tell refers to bottle type glass, pipes are a pyrex type of glass. I don't really know enough to be more specific. The pipe wont crack as long as you don't introduce it to any extremes. Heat it slowly, when cooling place it on a warm or room temperature fire proof surface, if the surface is cool or cold the pipe will cool too quickly and crack. If you do get a crack or two just heat the pipe again and they will disappear.
@KvnNavarro92 If the piece you're missing leaves a hole smaller than a pinhead you can manipulate the pieces together when the glass is hot and it will all fuse together. The glass sticks to itself when hot like some insane glue. If the piece you're missing is bigger you can always use a piece of glass of similar size from another broken pipe. This takes some practice playing with hot glass but it can be done. DO NOT put the pipe in cold water when you're done! Let it cool at room temperature.
In most bends and tubing pieces the artist uses a blowhose and cork to keep the pressure inside the tube to keep it from collapsing on itself. Really all depends on the joint connection
@xlxshanexlx I would recommend school or apprenticeship with a professional. I have no training, this is just one of my many hobbies and I made all my mistakes the hard way, many of them painful. After doing this randomly for ten years or so i just recently found out about the toxic fumes blowing glass produces. That could have been bad. Most art schools offer glass blowing classes. Good luck.
Thanks youuuuu!!!! The dickhead you see in my pfp broke my favorite pipe and I do NOT want to lose this one, it's so beautiful. And that's coming from a hardcore bong lover I have like 5% interest in pipes overall, so this blue beauty is SPECIALLLL lol
Agree with you on the first part and I too cannot get captions. Perhaps he has control over those and figures anyone who cannot hear can read lips. ♠ ♣ ○○ ☺ ☺ :P
You can fix it with the same process, I have put pipes back together that have been in several pieces. Make sure it is cleaned perfectly and it will not discolor.
Boros melting point is 3300 degrees. Propane is hot enough to do it really really really really really slowly. We regularly use torches that burn much, much hotter when we are blowing glass for real.
hey, i have a really nice steamroller that i broke recently, the pieces arent shattered, they broke into fixable pieces, but the question i have is, with this method can you burn the bowl back with the rest of the piece? the bowl didnt shatter, the bowl just broke off luckily, thank you
its a pipe buitiful one but the other day it fell to the floor and shattered four pieces of the middle the back and the head of the pipe are ok but in what what could i blow torch itto put the pieces bck together i managed to wood glue it bck together though
Hundred dollar wearable sea horse/functioning bowl. I had it new was offered to get paid for saving a rare expensive piece but last second slipped and all was fun anyway but its was broken in two spots at first now forget it and almost if i was alone and had taken more time for proper tools, i used wooden laundry clothes pins and they kept catching on fire holding it .
@discogypsy If your careful the glass will not lose much of its shape, when the glass is hot it has the consistency of play dough, if you hold it in one place it will droop, close up and basically be ruined, this is why i constantly rotate the piece while over the flame. Propane is the perfect gas to use, if you have something that burns too hot you will ruin your piece and have a puddle of molten glass.
Bro, thanks for the posting this. I would add that you *cant stress it enough* how you need to *evenly heat the body* of the glass you're working with to almost glowing red for the newer dab rigs. If you were to heat it like you did in this video it would snap, crackle, and pop into half a dozen shards. Im also wondering if you still alive 8 years on? Everyone so concerned about "toxic" fumes and all. Lol Maybe if you were doing this in a 3x5 closet with the door closed or something. The "toxic" fumes are negligible for just fixing one piece. Unless its dirty, oily, or other hazardous contaminants the glass. I use some cheap thick foil pans, like you can get at a Dollar Tree or some sh*t, to make a nice holder that can cradle the piece below where youre working.
That is as small as you want to go any smaller of a torch and it won't be able to heat it completely also I have never personally had any problems with leaving a torch on for a long time
btw if you had just used a oxy/propane or oxy/acetylene torch that many mechanics have you could have indeed repaired the pieces. It's always risky that the crack will run and you are not properly annealing it, but at least the torch would be hot enough.
Check craigslist there’s often (at least in my area) several glass blowers that offer good bong repairs, often not costly too if you have a bud who needs one fixed get em both done!
oh i wasn't saying yours was i thought you did a boss job actually i just recently fixed my micro toro but i used jb weld and it came it smkin hella good but i wanted to keep it all glass and i didnt know if i could reblow it.
i am a real professional glassblower in the midwest and first off pyrex is in no way shape or form plastic...it is borosilicate glass...google it if u dont believe me...second off i use to blow glass like this years ago when i first started learning...u do a good job of fixing that piece, but people need to know how dangerous it is to blow glass without proper ventilation...hot glass gives off very toxic fumes that can kill you...use proper ventillation..and mapp gas is way better than propane
Sure, send me the vid. If I can I'll try and make a video response, I have to find another broken piece though. If I can't find a piece I can at least talk you through it. Your butane burner should work ok, I started with a bunsen burner. Bongs are more tricky than pipes, you will have to find a way to hold it securely without burning yourself because you still have to heat the whole piece evenly at first or it will crack. Thanks for the props let me know when you send the video.
i don't see why this wouldn't work but still id rather ask before attempting this. also i was thinking if the propane method isn't possible maybe some UV glue for glass or some other types of glass glues for reassembling my piece, i found a variety of permanent sealing glues for glass at amazon if any one wants to know.. any help or advice is appreciated. thanks inTylerable
Hey dude awesome video, i have a problem i actually broke one of my pipes and right near the bowl going to the stem, it looks like a clean break because i can put it back together, but there is a tiny piece missing, what do i do? will doing what your doing matter whether that piece is missing, or does it melt completely and fuse the two broken parts together? Please help! and Thanks P.S. do you put the the pipe in cold water after your done or not ... i love playing with fire lol safetry1st :D
alone....the torches we use profesionally burn propane and oxygen which burns even hotter than mapp gas....its not the heat making it too liquid..its knowing your heat and how to make it work for you...regular propane like this just takes longer to heat up but it can all get the job done regardless...we work with glass in the molten stage on a regular basis, u just have to know how to control the glass when it is to that point..it does take some practice tho.
NO !!! Never put any glue, silicone, hotmelt or tape on anything you add heat to that goes anywhere near your mouth. Even if the product says non toxic that is not the same as non harmful. Actually, if anyone wants to try it do this first....Take a stick of hot melt and heat the end with a lighter and take a big breath ..Idk five or ten times. Then let it cool and eat the rest of the stick. I'd ask how's that going for ya but I doubt you'll eat a glue stick cuz some dick told ya too. Well that's what everything you smoke in that pipe is gonna taste like with hot glue near it. Even if you don't see or feel the glue breaking down most WILL taste it eventually. It might be just the slightest after taste but it usually will linger for some time after. (Lots of water to hydrate and milk to mask the hobo ass taste in your mouth). That hobo ass taste may/will eventually go away and you might think it's all good..This is NOT a good thing. Your taste buds are your first line of defense. It's warning you so listen. Say you are a heavy smoker and your mouth taste like ass already. Hobo ass may not bother you much. Be like a smoke after waking up extremely hungover. If, for some reason you brush your tongue with a cheese grater and don't taste the chemicals there will be more symptoms to follow. A sore chest, dehydration and headaches in no particular order will be your next warnings. I hope this helps you or anyone else considering this plan of attack. Take care.
I'm a glassblower, and I think that is an awesome idea, lol. Just keep it away from the area where fire goes, lol. You could use silicone caulking, lol, like those lightbulbs with the 'flowers' made out of silicone on them. Bounce proof son.
lucifuge 1973 i thought he meant like a decoration on the outside. Sort of like decorative tool safe. Whatever. Id tape the beoken one rogether until i had 20 more dollars for a new prodo spoon
God! lol. I think you went to far. I drop and break these glass pipes all the time. If you go to a lab all the glass stirs have a piece of rubber on the end to absorb vibrations so they don't brake if you hit the side of you beaker for example. My question was more like, Do you think a hot glue ring round the middle of the pipe were the usually break would make it drop proof. So tonight I am gonna do it bough the glue gun and glue. Will post video. As another note. Lucifuge 1973 I think you are exaggerating the dangers o plastic. lol and I passed 40 some time ago! Also the pipes usually break so often that i never clean them so I wanna hear no bull shit bout it hahahah! Just joking!
Sorry my friend. Like I said I changed my reply ..twice ..actually ..I should have just asked what do u plan on doing with this pipe ...hah ha my bad.. ah. Though you could have been a little more clear...actually ya f that ..its totally your fault ...f*** this ...hahahaha hah. Jking. Thx for not being to hard on me ..old guy ...lolol. Gluck with you video ..I'll have to tune I'm when its done. Take Care
