Brushless direct current motors are synchronous motors powered by direct current electricity through an inverter or switching power supply that generates electricity in the form of alternating current to drive each phase of the motor through a closed loop controller. The controller supplies current pulses to the motor windings that control the speed and torque of the motor. This control system replaces the commutator used in many conventional electric motors.
We can think of the structure of brushless motors very simply as the opposite of the brushed motor. Here, the magnet part is located on the shaft of the motor and the windings (i.e. coils) are stationary.
If you've noticed, brushless motors have 3 wires. These cables are connected to different phases of the windings inside the motor. When electric current is supplied to different phases in different sequences, a magnetic field is created in opposition to the magnets in the rotor (the rotating part of the motor), and thus the motor rotates. Unlike brushed motors, since it does not contain any wearing parts for the voltage applied to the coils, there is less loss of efficiency due to friction and the number of parts requiring maintenance.
Brushless DC motors are called inrunner or outrunner according to the type of rotors. In Inrunner type motors, the rotor is located inside the motor. They are similar in appearance to brushed DC motors.
Brushless motors used in remote controlled model cars are inrunner type. In Outrunner type motors, the windings are located inside the motor, while the rotor is the outer part called “bell”. Brushless motors used in model airplanes, helicopters and multicopters are of this type.
