Hi Spencer , great video. In the Uk we use " expanding filler foam " for the initial gap. This will also take any slight structural movement in the future. Cut the foam back when hard to around 1 or 2 mill under the edge, then add normal filler twice. The last fill mix with a little paint from the wall to prevent any flashing.

Mandy! I was just telling a friend last night how I love the way you guys in the UK do this! I watch 2 Irish brothers on RU-vid snd I love their techniques. Thank you for watching.

Hi Spencer we also do what we call here as hard fill ! When we have the filler/mud mixed with water we then mix it with oil paint which makes it set exceptionally hard this normally ends any chance of the crack reappearing!!!👏👏👏👏👏👏

@@spencercolgan well Spencer to be honest we usually use an oil top coat like gloss but I'd say yes any oil like under coat even it just makes the filler/mud go rock hard !👍👍👍👍👍👍

Is Easy Sand easier to use than Durabond? Seems like both Durabond and Easy Sand are popular plaster alternatives. Why did you choose Easy Sand? Great video, thanks for posting it!

Spencer, Zinsser Gardz makes a good bonding agent.

What about the flexing in the walls? Some use screws/disks for temporary hold but they don't open up crack.

Could you give the name and place to purchase the bonding agent that you first put on the wood lathe?

Do you use adhesive injected into drilled holes of the plaster around the cracks for when the surrounding plaster has come off the keys and is loose?
@spencercolgan
@spencercolgan 3 года назад
Yes! That system is called Plaster weld.
@Tephnos

@@spencercolgan It seems here in the UK there aren't many products built for this use, like how in the states you have 'plaster magic'. Over here it seems we just grab some hybrid polymer or PU adhesive and inject it into holes, keeping it in place with washers until its set, then you can fill as normal. I've also just typically slapped diluted PVA around and in the hole for when I put in filler, seems to do the job at least.

Is there any power tool that would make the plaster cutting faster? Just seems like there is a faster way than a knife.
@NiceGuyJK
@NiceGuyJK 2 месяца назад
Yes. An oscillating tool with a tile/grout blade (they're longer) will cut right through. Standing and getting the blade at the right angle will cut like a hot knife through butter. I did an approx. 14x12 bedroom, lots of cuts on all walls and ceiling, went through 2 blades.

Hi Spencer, I have just bought a 1914 house and it has lots of cracks, especially small ones on the ceiling where the ceiling joists are. I tried researching and there are several methods, like screwing in washers to prevent the wall from moving and causing more cracks... is a 100yr old house still moving or should it have settled by now. The Larsen in about 4times the price in Canada as it is in the USA like everything else.. the only filler I was able to find is plaster of Paris and then upon researching I came across a additive from a casting company that is supposed to make the plaster stronger.. thinking of using that as well... also you didn’t mention what you used as a top coat... is that a regular thunder or the same plaster just troweled on with a large trowel... This will be a lot of work and am considering just adding drywall on top of the plaster and then using lime paint to make it look like plaster again... I can’t decide... and again what’s the deal with using washers? Thanks in advance!

Me too nothing but surface cracks down stairs and half the ceiling missing on the 2nd floor. All talk and digging as they talk for hours with no real steps or information.

Hi Spencer, does the five minute mud set up as hard as plaster does? I have many cracks to fill and am afraid the five minute might not be hard enough over the years.
@spencercolgan
@spencercolgan 3 года назад
It does not. But Hardee’s doesn’t signify that your cracks will be remedied. Use mesh +5 minute mud. Or, why don’t you go get diamond plaster?

The space between the lath is not the key. The key is the plaster that is pushed through the space and wraps over the lath in the back to hold the plaster to the lath. Sorry but the terminology is important.

The space between the lath is a space… The keys are the pieces of lath. What you said is incorrect
@jbfixesit

@@spencercolgan Actually @jinggles5507 is correct. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lath_and_plaster - "the curls of plaster are called keys and are necessary to keep the plaster on the lath"
@harryblack5041
@harryblack5041 5 месяцев назад
@@jbfixesit Indeed. The lath are the wood strips, Plaster pushed through and curling behind the lath creates mushrooming and a key is formed- ie/ it ' keys' to the lath. Unsure regards the piano key theory....

That's how it's done Spencer. BTW, plaster is so superior to drywall it's not funny, better insulation, noise, fire, rock solid, lasts 80 or 90 years.
