The gasket and the over flow tube are replaceable with a screw driver and channel lock pliers. Main level tubs may have access from the basement. Other times you may need to cut out a section of drywall large enough to reach inside in a wall to gain access the tube. Keyhole hand saws cut drywall easily. You will want to make sure the is no electric outlet near the area you need to open up. Locate the studs in the wall before cutting the drywall. I opened up a wall in a linen closet to repair this one [ approx 30" X 20", you size may be different]. When you've made the you can repair the drywall yourself, hire a handyman or install an access panel.

Hi Jason, The threaded insert may require a little more force to free, it may be cross threaded. Forcing it could also break the other threaded drain part. Do you have access to the drain from below the tub? If you do have access one person may be able to secure the drain while one person removes the insert. Good luck, Brad

+Armagan Yavuz The trip lever is a separate issue and it has nothing to do with the drain leaking. The trip lever would only cause trouble if someone took a bath before I repaired it and allowed water to raise above the lever. Repairing the trip lever was addressed at another time from behind the wall.

@@BradWilkins I've seen plumbers do the same, great when you have the experience. Don't make assumptions about ones abilities. Proper tools are still the better way to go 99% of the time.

@@jeffm2787 A true craftsman doesn't need the best tools. Knowledge trumps tools. A musician can make a plastic piano sound good.
