Having an issue with a Outside Water Faucet Leaking from the handle. Took it apart to show you how fix common issues with leaky outside faucets.
This is for the Woodford Model 14, but the process is very similar on different models, the parts change. I Figured I would film in case it helps anyone.

I always put a little silicone grease on the rubber parts before reassembling

Appreciate it. 👍👍 That’s how I pronounced it at first… but the company actually put out a video and T-shirts with the pronunciation and have the K sound 🤷‍♂️ That I’ve got used to, but the WERA / Vera pronunciation has been harder

2:47 when you said to keep from twisting the pipe too much inside the house. I just wanted to get your opinion. My spigot had and old hose stuck on and I had to use some pb blaster and wrench it off. When I did the whole spigot moved slightly. Do you think this would cause any issues inside the house? The spigot functions appropriately. Opens and shuts off fine. It does leak from the handle when turned on with hose attached. I check in the basement and doesn’t appear to be any leaks where the pipe comes in the house. I appreciate the video and your help!

It will have some movement.. and depends on how the faucet connects to your plumbing, some will have more than others. If it’s a soldered connection it will have the least give, threaded will give some, and a sharkbite will spin 100% If it was just slightly and you don’t see any leaks you should be fine.

@@MORGANSMaintenance hey I appreciate the quick response! Yeah I’m not sure how the sillcock is connected. The insulation is hiding it and I didn’t want to mess with it. I just checked for leaks and didn’t see anything obvious but I will keep an eye on it. Thanks again!

They aren't usually marked well. Sometimes it's stamped on the handle. The 14 (like I changed) doesn't have the breather on top, the 17 does. Those are the two most popular Woodford Ones

Very nice tutorial. It seems that this particular valve has a construction flaw. That packing seal opening is way too big. On the valve stem there should be a thicker part/circumferential elongated protrusion compatible with a packing seal thus making that opening for the seal smaller. Additionally some extra support brass ring would be nice. This way there would be less play on the stem resulting in slower wear of the packing. If you have the time, please make more of those HOWTOs.

It is a common issue with this one… they usually don’t leak as bad as this one was, but they will drip around the handle. I haven’t run into as many of the newer models of this one, they may have done something different. I hope to get to a point that I can film more things like these and the “Watch Me Work”… The situation, time frame, and customer don’t always line up. That or I do film, but then I get home to edit and my head is half cut off like in the beginning of this one 😂 When you are filming fixing something you only get one take… you can’t unring that bell.. Appreciate you watching my friend 👍

🤷‍♂️.. not much else that can be an issue. Is it leaking from the handle or faucet. Only other thing there could be, is damage at the seat where the washer seals off. Unlike other plumbing fixtures, it’s not a changeable part. You have to change the entire faucet to fix that.
