Thank you! Great video! Been waiting for boyfriend to fix my floor in my mobile home for over a year! Thanks to your video, I fixed the hole my damn self! Thank you so much!
I have replaced my bathroom floor in my house 3x since 2018. As soon as you said metal ductwork and hole I ran and checked. Yup I have a hole so hopefully this will be my last time fixing it.
Pop a hole so you can measure from joist to joist, measure from joist to joist, mark the edge of each joist, cut a piece of plywood to fit, mark edges of your piece lined up on your marks, cut marked edges, cut 2x4s for side blocking half on old half on new, cut 2x4s for blocking to existing joists, screw 2x4s in, screw plywood to 2x's. You should always put blocking in from joist to joist never just from old plywood to new plywood. It doesnt seem good to screw through the old mobile home floors, just let it sit on the blocking or use glue When you encounter glue on the joists cut a bunch of lines with sawzall or skillsaw like an inch or two apart, and it chips out easier
I replaced the subfloor in my friends trailer. Turned out good. Pulled the carpet back replaced with plywood and recovered the carpet. She was very happy
Very informative video. Am having problem with spongy bathroom floor. Not sure if it is shower drain leakage, hot water tank, toilet, or possibly AC duct. That is something I hadn't even considered. Now at least I have a good idea of what would be involved in repairing it.
Made it look easy. The hard part is getting everything out of the way to get at the problem. (Furnature, toys, carpet, pets, people...) Good idea on the side "wings" to control flexing.
We just had a really long cold freeze in Indiana. Our pipes froze under our mobile home. When we finally heated them up, cracks and sewer line froze, backing up into the tubs. Clean water backed onto bathroom floors.Ran into bedrooms. Your no nonsense application to the problem filled my heart and hopes. I love the way you let your son help and learn. Great
I was hoping this would help me. My floor issue is where the fridge goes so I’m going to want better bracing. Our home is getting quite old so this method will probably be put into use soon. I’ll use plywood rather than the OSB though. I want this to last longer than me. I hope. Thanks for sharing this. Made it sound so easy!
Thank you for the video! I had unfortunately watched 5 different videos that were a complete joke before finding this video. This is by far the best video and all other videos should be removed from the platform. Good stuff I'll definitely looking forward to any future videos you put out no matter the subject of the video!
You should've fastened those short 2 x 4 side pieces for better support. Honestly, I don't think you'd even need them to begin with. But. Hey, it's your house!
Thx for this. I think I have to call someone for help here. I wonder how they would do it. Then I know and can’t get ripped off. It’s more fixable than I thought.
I've been laughed at for being a sissy for using knee pads. I still use 'em. It's okay for the first minute to ignore the pads. If you're doing tile floor or roofing you can tell the difference in the first hour. And if you kneel on a nail...
Very informative video Tobin 👍 Great job on the sub floor. Thanks for taking the time to show how it's done. Have a great weekend Love 🌻 from Apex NC 💜
I’m replacing a subfloor in a pier & beam. Would it be worth it to seal OSB with a coat of polyacrylic on all sides? Anyone have experience with this hack?
Thanks, i knew my floors felt damp for some reason. Makes sense when you said the ducts leak. Sending moisture. Thank you. Gotta get new floors new duct work.
Thank you for your video. We need to replace all our subfloors in our older mobile home, here in western nc. Hopefully we'll be able to come up with the funds for that.... We did the part of the kitchen ourselves a few years ago. You're right about the dust!!!! Moisture is the enemy. And we seem to get so much rain the last few years! Thanks again for the video. Enjoy your day! 🌻
Im about to fix a mobile homr that has about 10 soft spots. a few are by the a.c as you spoke of. I understand what u did and why u did good, but Do i need osb or plywood?? Also was urs 3/4 or 1/2 inch? this mobile home im dealing with i wont see under floor until monday, but Im trying to figure out if osb is required for mobile homes? Mine is 2019 and im told they still use osb? why if plywood is more durable?
This is definitely the video i was looking for the lady before me lived in this trailer for 11 years and didnt do much keep up the floors the ceiling and the porch are what needs to get done i cant afford to get someone to don it so im going to have to do it a little at a time my self ive been here for a year and its mostly the sides and one big spot in the kitchen and the bathroom kids put holes in the the floor on there room from jumping on the bed and my room i cant even sleep in it because the floor is falling in under the window and water leakes from the bathroom for some reason the pipes in the bathroom are inside the house instead of under it
No. You are attaching to nothing. Because the rest of the floor is pressed wood. It will tear out and fall. You must go horizontal and out blocking under edges from joist to joist. Not in middle.
Thank you. We had a small leak in a waterline for our washing machine that we didn't notice until it was too late. That's taken care of, but now we have a bulge in our hallway. I've had floor issues in the past, but those were in stick built homes, not a manufactured as we're in now. It looks like the hardest part for me will be taking up the current flooring (lvp) without damaging it so I can take care of the repair.
Thank you! This is the very first video I have found with the exact problem i have. Now i know what is probably the cause of mine too. Probably the same as yours. Thank you so much for this! Now i know i need some bracing. I wondered what to do there.
Filmed a new video this weekend(should be coming out in a few weeks) showing how we dealt with this and also how we will hopefully never have to fix any spots again. Spoiler alert, it involved 25 sheets of OSB and a lot of screws😁😁
Great job! Thanks for making this video. I was intimidated by the idea of replacing subfloor, but now I'm actually excited. You just gained a subscriber.
I have a 50 year old mobile home that I’m slowly working on. I just ordered new roof trusses to peak my roof, I’m thinking of replacing my furnace and doing all my ductwork in the attic space which will be conditioned. Then I’ll be doing a full repipe and replacing a good chunk of subfloor.
Thanks for sharing..good information..and I might need it soon in my old mobile home. Lol I thought I was the only one that said WONKY🤣🤣 until next time..God Bless your family
This has reduced my fears a whole lot. Thank you so much!! I will attack the job myself (with a helper) but I will not use OSB for the repair; most likely I will opt for plywood.
I always replace my insulation and put felt paper on top of the duct work when I have to repair a spot to prevent water condensation from ruining the floor again. And I use plywood instead of OSB chip board.
Been awhile since I repaired a manufacture home floor. The one I am living in now is about 23 years old and my back door was leaking in at the knob latch. First time I have had this problem. I stopped the leak and now will repair the small soft spot just below the corner of the door. This help refresh my memory on how to do it.
It helped me. My sub floor is loosing by the entry of the office or middle room. It is by a vent. I have to clean out my and make the repair. You explained every i have to do. Thank you so much!
couple recommendations. go joist to joist with 2x4 / 2x6 instead of the small pieces connecting old to new. toenail into joists. also, cut out the pieces in 4' sections (width of old piece, not multiple pieces) so weight is distributed to the max
Thanks for sharing I appreciate the video and should be a pretty simple fix now and off I go to work the magic and seems like it will do all I need and look good as well so thanks again.
We had the entire duct system replaced with the kind of ducts that are in a normal houses attic. The only problem is the are basically laying on the ground so the are easier for mice to get to a chew up.
You know new mobile homes only allow ceiling a/c they admit this is a problem. . With the way they were built. So seems unfairly that didn't replace a/c 's for mobile Home owners. And floors that were messed up. Crazy. So what kind of vent is in the house Kind???
I hate when the subfloor is glued down with staples. It makes it ten times harder to pull up. I always use a flush cutter to clean the top of the joists off. You did a good job with all the bracing. keep up the good work guys!
Who would you recommend to find out why you have a soft spot? Our home is only 5 yrs old and we have soft spots not close to water. A contractor or maybe a home inspector?
So, our spots were mostly caused by our ac ducts leaking. They are under the house, and had huge holes in them in some spots. The ducts would push air and moisture under the house, causing the floors to become soft. Because that was our experience, my first suggestion would be to check all the duct work. Make sure nothing it leaking. If that looks good, I would call a contractor out and just have them double check.
