In this video I repair a broken speedometer in the Boosted Miata. The fix is pretty simple and way cheaper than buying a new speed generator. This applies to the 2nd generation Miata, the NBs. Earlier Miatas use a cable.
Things you’ll need:
Solder and Soldering Iron
Wire Clippers / Strippers
Heat Shrink
Silicone RTV Sealant or better yet Epoxy Resin
10MM box end wrench
First, jack the car up from behind and put on jack stands so you have a slight angle going down to the front of the car. This will prevent transmission oil from leaking once the speed generator is removed. The speed generator (sensor) is located at the back of the transmission on the passenger side. It has a short wire coming from it that attaches to a green connector on the main harness that runs along the power plant frame.
To remove it, simply unscrew the 10MM bolt that holds it in then use a screwdriver and carefully pry the sensor out. It’s a tight fit with the power plant frame and butterfly brace getting in the way, but it’s doable.
Inspect the unit, checking to make sure the rubber o-ring is not torn. Replace if needed, otherwise you’ll end up leaking transmission fluid.
Remove the plastic “potting” material from the top of the speed generator to get access to the terminals inside. Clean up the terminals, removing any old solder using your soldering iron and broken wire strands that may still be attached.
Cut and strip the wires on the connector and use a little bit of solder to keep the bare wires from fraying. Remove the old plastic wire cover and replace with some heat shrink. Don ‘t forget to slide the rubber grommet / wire holder thingy back onto the connector wire, threading the two ends through it. The rubber thingy then slips onto the edge of the unit and you are ready to solder. It doesn’t matter which wire attaches to which terminal on the generator as far as I can tell (maybe I just got lucky?) Carefully solder the wire, being careful not to let them touch (there’s a small plastic tab between the terminals to help you there.) Also, easy on the solder, you don’t want it flowing from one terminal to the other.
Now cover the wire and terminals with RTV silicone or better yet, use an epoxy resin. You might even be able to reuse the green plastic “potting” thing if it came out in one piece, but you’ll need to shave it down to make it fit. You can use meter to test your connections if you want then re-install! 😀
That's it! I hope you like my video and be sure to subscribe to see more awesome videos as I build my boosted Miata!

Why can't videos all be this clear and simple? No stupid music, no egomaniac spouting nonsense, keep'em coming!

Thanks for checking out my video! I call this thing a sensor, but in reality it's a speed generator that sends voltage back to the gauge to make the needle move.

I like the fact that you try and fix something instead of just replacing it! I need to do that with my Miata too but sometimes I'm just lazy.. Anyway, good video!

MiataMods thanks, yeah my whole approach is to keep this build on a budget. But I also value my time. these sensors cost $200.00 new. If they were like $30.00, I'd buy a new one in a heartbeat.

Nice job! Tough spot to shoot. For what it's worth, I feel your pain when it comes to crawling around underneath a Miata.

I've gotta say, I love your videos, you and the carpassionchannel are my two favorite channels to go to. You both do great videos showing exactly what you're doing to fix the problem. Great work

Thanks. Useful information. Mine fails from time to time during some seconds. But after that, it works fine again for months. I think perhaps it happens after rainy days. It seldom rains here. It's been like that for the last four years. I'll look next time car goes in workshop.

Good for you being creative, I've tossed other sensors for a similar problem before and now I'm wondering why I didn't fix it like that when its so simple!

GearHeads Garage thanks, they are expensive new.trying to stay on budget. May end up buying a vvt gear though...

Boosted Miata Always on a budget! especially when doing a big project its hard to decide where to spend mote and less for each item when it would be nice to just go with "the best" with everything!

Thanks for this video. I repaired mine and used your tip about using epoxy resin to seal the deal. Your right about polarity, it doesn't matter, its an AC generator.

Thanks for the video!! I searched EVERYWHERE for something to fix the speedometer. Mines spotty and cuts out mid drive sometimes. Gonna go home today and have a looksie

Looks like a pretty good permanent fix. I would think polarity WOULD be an issue, but either it isn't or you got lucky. Well done. The k-series engines also use an electric speed sensor (at least the k20 and k24 do) and they can break often. Usually break when the mechanic is not taking care when disconnecting the wiring connector.
@Seandoestech

fiatmonkey In my case, I think the harness that runs along the power plant frame which the sensor connects to was loose and pulled on the connector wire. over time it just broke. Plus I'm sure it doesn't help that I've unplugged that sensor many many times, removing the engine and trans multiple times.

Boosted Miata If you used epoxy and messed the polarity, doubt you'd be able to repair it again easily.
@Seandoestech
@Seandoestech 7 лет назад
jamieee321 I'll just reverse it at the connector end, wouldn't open up the sensor :-) but taking it apart again would be nearly impossible,, agree.

Hi, I have a miata 2004 automatic transmission. And it is not working where speed is set. The revolutions, temperature everything works well. Could that sensor be? I write to you from Santo Domingo, excuse my English is not very good.

Denys Merengue yes, it could be the sensor.

Hi nice video. My odometer and speedometer just stopped working a while ago. We lifted the car with my brother just to check the sensor and put it back again. It worked for a couple of hours but again stops working from time to time. Is the speed sensor my problem? If i follow your instructions will this solve my problem? Thanks
@Seandoestech
@Seandoestech 3 года назад
Hard to say the wires do get brittle over time and break. I would start there. It’s also possible the sensor it self is bad and needs replacement.

Did you have to put some oil back il the transmission after ? is it hard to change oil transmission in the process? my NB FL has 140 000km, is it worth changing the oil please ? Thx in advance
@Seandoestech
@Seandoestech 3 года назад
I didn’t need to add any more. I would definitely change the trans oil at that number. It would probably improve shifting performance.

Just wondering what the wires are... is one signal to dash and the other power ?
@gauchejim

its more likely to be an AC generator.
