In this video I repair a broken speedometer in the Boosted Miata. The fix is pretty simple and way cheaper than buying a new speed generator. This applies to the 2nd generation Miata, the NBs. Earlier Miatas use a cable.
Things you’ll need:
Solder and Soldering Iron
Wire Clippers / Strippers
Heat Shrink
Silicone RTV Sealant or better yet Epoxy Resin
10MM box end wrench
First, jack the car up from behind and put on jack stands so you have a slight angle going down to the front of the car. This will prevent transmission oil from leaking once the speed generator is removed. The speed generator (sensor) is located at the back of the transmission on the passenger side. It has a short wire coming from it that attaches to a green connector on the main harness that runs along the power plant frame.
To remove it, simply unscrew the 10MM bolt that holds it in then use a screwdriver and carefully pry the sensor out. It’s a tight fit with the power plant frame and butterfly brace getting in the way, but it’s doable.
Inspect the unit, checking to make sure the rubber o-ring is not torn. Replace if needed, otherwise you’ll end up leaking transmission fluid.
Remove the plastic “potting” material from the top of the speed generator to get access to the terminals inside. Clean up the terminals, removing any old solder using your soldering iron and broken wire strands that may still be attached.
Cut and strip the wires on the connector and use a little bit of solder to keep the bare wires from fraying. Remove the old plastic wire cover and replace with some heat shrink. Don ‘t forget to slide the rubber grommet / wire holder thingy back onto the connector wire, threading the two ends through it. The rubber thingy then slips onto the edge of the unit and you are ready to solder. It doesn’t matter which wire attaches to which terminal on the generator as far as I can tell (maybe I just got lucky?) Carefully solder the wire, being careful not to let them touch (there’s a small plastic tab between the terminals to help you there.) Also, easy on the solder, you don’t want it flowing from one terminal to the other.
Now cover the wire and terminals with RTV silicone or better yet, use an epoxy resin. You might even be able to reuse the green plastic “potting” thing if it came out in one piece, but you’ll need to shave it down to make it fit. You can use meter to test your connections if you want then re-install! 😀
