I cannot tell you how invaluable this video has been to me! I am a 62 yr old woman and I followed your instructions one by one, and Voila! My faucets are working perfectly! Thank you! Thank you! And the Chihuahua too!
This was super thorough and helpful. Even little things like ensuring that the new valve stems were snug before placing them into the shower. Wouldn’t have thought of that and just put them in. Superb instruction…You’ve got a new sub.
Fine video, mission accomplished for sure. You indicated that this shower is not used often but reseating those valves may have been worth buying the proper tool. You mentioned that it is a simple job, and it is , but it is time consuming. Don't lose those seats that came with the kits, you may be revisiting this project in the future.
Thanks for this great video. I am a 68yr old single woman, and I did this successfully to my leaking tub faucet about 12 yrs ago. Helps me remember how to do it right!
Thank you so much, Ken! My stem unscrewed itself out and I was at a total loss at what to do. I'm an the most unhandy person no matter how hard I try. I'm going to use your video to fix it as it seems exactly what I was looking for and especially since I may end up having to replace the stem. Keep saving us unhandy people please!
You did a great job I never would have thought to tighten then and check I would have just placed them on thank you for the video keep up the good work
This is a great video. Step by step on how to replace this. Thank you for making this. I am fixing to do this to both bathrooms in my house. I will make sure to get a tool to replace the seats also.
Thumb's up for taking the time to go through this step-by-step. Sure, I'd done this job before, but because of that appreciate how documenting it all just adds an extra level of bother to the operation.
Thanks! This point at 11:57 is SO important. I spent literally hours trying to figure out why my diverter wasn't fully working, and it was because I had tightened the packing nut while the stem was too tight. Your video saved the day (and probably some plumbing $$ :) )
Yes, that is the one thing which wasn't very obvious anywhere else. Thanks Ken for the video and JP for pointing out the time stamp and the fact about 'tightening the packing nut while the stem was too tight'.
That was a good job but, you still should have replaced the seats. It is worth getting and using a seat wrench to get the old seats out. Using one of those makes it pretty easy But, I can understand why you did what you did. Just the other day, I received a rebuild kit I bought online for $60.00 for my Dad's 63 year old American Standard 3-handle shower valve in our old, upstairs bathroom that us kids used when we were young. I did replace the seats and it wasn't too bad. The rest went in fine. My Dad's 63 year old shower works perfectly now! Like it's brand new!
Hercules overtightened the water off does not help either, 😸💪✌️🙏🤔 half turn after rubber contacts, just like a oil filter, too much will pinch or roll seal ...👍🎯☝️
Great job, but if I’m going to do this job I’m going to make darn sure I replace the seats. Why not do it...you have everything already opened up and the proper tool is cheap. You did a very, very good job otherwise. Good video.
@@ShortyisHeree I had the seats in the kit, what I needed was the removal tool. My seats did not leak so I left them. If my seats did leak I would have got the tool and changed out the seat. I still have the seats if that becomes necessary.
Anthony Good point . But if the seats aren’t ‘crashed’ , damaged they might not need replacement . But they should be replaced since the repair is being done anyway.👍. So you would be correct.
@KenTraining You should have changed Bibb Seats. You don't need L shaped special wrench, and you can use a Philips Screw Driver #5 which worksbetter than a Wrench.😅
I have this same setup and its leaking like a mess! Old school is right. Thank you for the video. Part number for this kit is #39619 Danco Pfister brand!
Great video, thanks! I bought the Danco Gerber faucet replacement set for my leaky cold water knob. Is is safe to replace my center diverter stem and handle set before turning off the building's water supply (as a dry "practice" run before the apartment's superintendent turns off the central water supply for a few hours maintenance sometime in the coming weeks)? From your video it seems totally safe (no gush of water while replace the center diverter).
Great video. I've replaced diverter valves in my house over 30 years. The knob was stripped out along with the stem splines. When I installed the new Danco diverter valve it leaked just like yours does, maybe a bit more when the shower mode is selected. You seemed ok to live with it. Since this video is 3 years old, did you ever fix that or figure out why it's leaking? Thanks!!
@@KenTraining Thanks so much for the info. My diverter valve is leaking just like yours was but worse. Someone in the comments of the Danco valve mentioned his O-ring was a bit thin and he put a thicker one on and it took care of his problem. I did the same but it only made it better, not fixed. Now it's leaking like before. I bought a Home Depot home brand Everbuilt diverter valve and plan to give that a try otherwise I'll be doing the same as you did. I also like how you didn't need to turn off the water to replace the diverter valve. The water shutoff valve is from the 60's and sometimes it wants to seep so I tighten the bonnet but if I don't need to shut it off that's even better. Thanks!!
I just replaced my diverter valve with this exact one and lost a lot of water pressure. I made sure the valve was fully opened before tightening the nut but it didn’t make a difference. Any advice would be appreciated!
you have a restriction somewhere. 1. shut water off and remove valve/s and look with flash light for debris. open water on without valves to blow out anything in the lines. put back together and test.
While this does have good information I don’t see how you can call this 100% success since your diverter is leaking. There shouldn’t be any water stream coming down the spout if the water is being diverted to the shower. Either you have a bad seat behind the diverter or a defective diverter valve.
I purchased a Pfister 910-374 Marquis Hot and Cold Stem the Pfister 960-280 2-1/2 in. O.D. Zinc Die-Cast Replacement appears to be to short. What is the right size Die Cast?
Do I have yo make sure to buy the exact diverter valve to replace with? Or are they all the same first time home buyers our house us 1983 and my pull for the shower broke off I can pull with Rench to shower for now but when I can will be replacing it myself can I just buy any or do I need to make sure it is the same part that are in our bathroom now? It's three piece like this but for our shower it was an ugly stick to pull and very hard to push back in the wall
if you are replacing internal part and keeping the valve body, you will need the exact replacement parts. the best bet is to pull out the old parts and bring to hardware store so you can match it up.
if you are sure you have the correct replacement part with the same thread pattern you man need to rethread the threads. you will need the exact tap and dye size for this and I don't know that size. If I were you, call a plumber in to evaluate.
I replaced my diverter valve and now it doesn’t send water to my shower head. Can it that when I took out my old valve the washer was broken, could the broken piece got stuck where the water goes to my shower head. Cause now it just drips water from my shower head. Thank you 🙏🏽
Yes, anything is possible. I would 1. Shut off the water 2. Take the diverter valve apart and check with flashlight any obstructions. Then I would turn water on for a second to blow out any debris. 3. Put diverter valve back in and make sure valve operates freely 4. Put water back on and test operation.
Do i need to replace the whole diverter in the wall or just those valve knob stems? My faucet is dripping slowly and i noticed when i took off the knobs and the valve, there were broken stems inside the pipe/diverter. Could i just replace the valves?
Mine has a broken seat behind the stem but stem is good. But ill probably replace stems and seats. Could i use brass instead of plastic the part that screws in behind the valve stem?@@KenTraining
Thanks, i was told by like 3 people to replace the whole diverter but nothing is wrong with it. Just the seating was broke and had my faucet leaking. Thank You@KenTraining
Interesting. You did show the container of plumbers lube ( grease ) . A very necessary treatment on the brass screw threads before install . Apply to screw threads then go lightly at first upon tightening to ensure alignment is correct.
I have been trying for a month to get the diverter out of the on and off knob (the plastic piece) and I can’t get it! It’s A old shower like the one you are working on and every time I try to take it out it literally moves the whole wall like it’s not coming out! Do you have any suggestions at all? I would so appreciate it!
It sounds like the valve handle (the part you normally turn with your hand) is rusted/stuck on the valve stem. In that case you may need a valve handle removal tool. check out this link www.homedepot.com/p/Armour-Line-Adjustable-Faucet-Handle-and-Compression-Sleeve-Puller-RP77233/306693291?g_store=&source=shoppingads&locale=en-US&&mtc=Shopping-B-F_D26P-G-D26P-026_007_PLUMB_REPAIR-NA-NA-Feed-SMART-NA-NA-New_Engen&cm_mmc=Shopping-B-F_D26P-G-D26P-026_007_PLUMB_REPAIR-NA-NA-Feed-SMART-NA-NA-New_Engen-71700000081569458-58700006932068295-92700062338492184&gclid=Cj0KCQjw5oiMBhDtARIsAJi0qk0u28F3DJhSy8N6FbB9Z3t_AzFHhekjsmSWVd_yq-4HP70x9tMmwp0aAnFTEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds
Plumbers putty Is not used in an installation like this. That is used where you want to prevent leakage for something like water on a sink deck down into a cabinet or a garbage disposal flange down into a cabinet. It simply seals the gaps.
I replaced the cold water stem in my shower. But the problem im having now is when you shut the water off, the handle won’t stop spinning. And if you keep spinning it, the entire handle + stem will pull out of the wall. Is this just because I wasn’t using the socket wrenches and was simply using a wrench to tighten it?
@@KenTraining just double checked the package and it is a cold stem. It’s strange too because when I put it in with a hand wrench, it was tight and worked properly for a few days (when I turned the water off, the knob would come to a complete stop).
then buy the special seat removal tool, spray penetrating fluid on the old seat, let sit for 10 minutes then try to extract old seat with tool. go slow and don't break or strip anything. you may need to add more penetrating fluid or even some heat.
Great question, the answer is First call in a plumber to see if they have some tricks to replace it that you did not do. if the plumber is unsuccessful in the valve replacement then How bad was the valve for you to start this project. If you cant get the old valve out can you live with the old valve? If you can then just live with it, if you cant, you will need to remove the entire valve and replace the shower fixture with all new. try to go in the back of the shower wall for access. This requires more skill than just replacing the valves.
Yes, as long as the hot and cold are shut off you are safe. BUT just to be on the safe side, go slow and always know where your main water shut off valve is located.
I think so. It goes to tub really strong but doesn’t go to shower really. I cleaned the inside and removed a stuck washer in the hole and still no good
So now the tub part shuts off and I get a spurt of water on the shower for half a second and then that goes off too. It sounds like it wants to come thru the shower but it just doesn’t for some reason
So, you took 3 times the time; when you could've done it in 1/3rd the time. Also, you talk TOO much. Most of us viewers, are NOT children. Also, you should've gone to "Home Depot" and bought a "seat" tool. It only costs $16.00. Because, those seats, NEED to be changed whenever you change the stems. Just like the washers and the Packing item. Now, if you will view and listen to the "JSK" video on RU-vid;you will see, he says NOT one a word. And in most cases you do not see his face. Wow good! And he teaches like few have ever done. Then you should use his awesome "training" Technic. It is the most of us have ever seen. Try it. And you will see HOW to teach. And save much time. Oh indeed!
