I'm in the position I cant get anyone to do this job for me, assuming it to small a job for a guy to do. I'll have a go at it myself, only difference is the house is cavity block & I'll have to build the blocks up to below the sill & then fit the window! Thank you for you're video!

I did the opposite... replaced a window with a door. The tough part was the exterior brick that I had to finish off on the lower section of the door. It came out well since I had leftover brick from the area under the old window.

I would have thought that tommy would have put caulking under the sill plate, so that wee beasties can't get in.
@malachy1847
@malachy1847 9 лет назад
Correct in that regard also it would have given him an opportunity to create a weather tight joint under same against wind driven rain that could come onto the porch area also this would be a great time to treat the area with wood preserve then retro insulate internally to stop the like of cold bridging allied with convected currents causing and mould problems behind the internal wall as water vapour could then just crash out

Not many instances where I would think: "I should replace this DOOR with this WINDOW." But, that's what the homeowner wants, so... [if he just wanted to enjoy the view, or let in some light, he could have installed a door with a single large clear glass panel--then, he could see outside, and still have a door. Oh well...]

There are homes that added an addition to the home in later years that now has two front doors. I seen two homes like this before. This would actually resolve the issue of two front doors by replacingone with a window.

There are some houses with doors on the second floor that lead to ugly balconies. I would replace those doors with windows and tear down the balcony.

@timf5963
@timf5963 Год назад
I think it depends on how much preparation is needed. If you prepared the opening and bought the 2x4s and all the other supplies, the window company/handyman could do the rest. I can imagine a handyman charging around $200 and a company charging up to $1000. If they're doing everything like removing the door and the siding and buying everything, it would be a lot more. This could be entirely DIY, but just be sure the exterior is watertight.

@fd3871
@fd3871 6 лет назад
pretty self explanatory. it can only go so much either way. E.g. if the object can only go 2cm to the left from the right edge then / 2 (the middle) leaves you having to go 1 cm back to the right to be centered in the hole.

A "cripple" is just a stud that is shorter than normal (below a window, or between a header and top plate, etc.). Probably "cripple stud" comes from "cripple wall," which is (more or less) a short foundation "wall." Obviously, "cripple" would be offensive if applied to a person, but in framing, it's just a shorter-than-normal stud [shorter-than-normal meaning it's "impaired" (maybe not the correct word?), and cannot be used in a "normal" way for framing. A jack stud is also shorter than normal, but it has a specific purpose. But, who really knows?

No wonder American houses are so cheap, they're built no better than a summerhouses. Why is that? It must make house insurance pretty high as well. Apart from fire risk from so much wood, you could break in with a good kick by the looks of it, or a cordless jigsaw maybe 😁
@ckm-mkc
@ckm-mkc 5 лет назад
Wood is cheap in the US, it's easy to modify and add on and very fast to build with. Plus, in some parts of the country you would not want to live in a brick/masonry house - the first earthquake and you would be dead... Besides, there are plenty of wood houses in the US that are 200 years old and almost all the labor knows how to build them. It only 'cheap' if you do a shitty job of putting it together.
@woooweee

You can try to break in, but we have guns. and yes wood is cheap, easier to work with, and repair.
