Dear viewer,
In this video I am showing you how to replace a failed or failing trunk latch on a ML W164 and GL X164 Mercedes Benz. The process and the latch is identical regardless if you have the base model with just the soft-close function or a vehicle that is speced out the automatic opening and closing tailgate.
Usually what happens with these latches is that the soft close mechanism inside of them fails, thus forcing the owner to slam the trunk closed. While this is a workaround for the issue and will get you by for some time, eventually the latch will fail completely and the tailgate will no longer stay closed. Therefore it is a good option to just go ahead and replace the failed latch without postponing this too much. OE part number for the latch is A164 740 03 35. While the price for a new latch varies, depending on whether you order an Ebay special or buy one directly from Mercedesl. That being said, my advice is to get one that is from a reputable brand and is built to the OE standards.
If you liked the video, please consider giving it a thumbs up and subscribe to the channel for more content like this! As always if you have any questions, feel free to post them in the comment section below. I do my best to answer to all comments.

Very helpful. Had it all apart and back together inside of an hour with the new latch installed. Thanks for spending half an hour trying to figure out how to get the latch passed the emerg release. After watching that you saved in 29 minutes. Also, very helpful to know which sequence to take the panels off. My only suggestion would be to not tell us what you don’t know but to simply stop and make your edit there. It will certainly streamline your videos. Thanks again.

Thanks so much! This went quicker than it would have if I didn't know which trim pieces to remove at what time. Also, I drilled out the rivets since I had some 3/16" on-hand. I'm assuming that was MUCH easier than pulling and bending and making sure the lock was removed without breaking that interior hatch release. Again, thank you!

I am happy to hear the vide helped you out. And you are correct, if I would have just drilled out the rivets and replaced them after that would have made things a lot easier. Still, with filming and doing all of the work it took no more than 40min, so I don't think it was too bad.

Thanks for taking the time to make this video! Will be doing the same repair myself this week after I receive new aftermarket actuator lock that seems to be getting a lot of positive reviews on Amazon. Bought the lock for US $43 plus tools to remove plastic trim pieces for $12 and BMW clips that you mentioned for $7.

You can drill out the rivits in the plastic piece and install new ones when you're done. Takes like 2 minutes.
@EndlessMotorWorks
@EndlessMotorWorks 10 месяцев назад
I know, but the idea here was to show this being done in away that most people would be able to follow. Not everyone has a cordless drill, nor a rivet gun. That being said, would drilling the rivets out make it easier - for sure, I can't deny that.

maybe you can share the bmw part number for the clips? (as far as i remember there were more than 10 of them and they cost quite a fortune [mb indicates theyre one time use only])
@EndlessMotorWorks
@EndlessMotorWorks 2 года назад
They are "one time use" if they break. If they are fine you can reuse them. The BMW clips I have are chinese knockoffs. I bought them from a local auto parts store when they were doing a clearance of old inventory. I got like 10 of these baggies with 10 clips in each one for about 5 bucks. I certainly don't recommend going to the dealer for these clips, as you can also find them pretty cheap on Amazon and Ebay. That being said the BMW part number for this style of clips is 51411973500.

I replaced my ml350 actuator. When the car is off and locked i noticed that the front and rear signal lights flash every so often. Any ideas why this is happening?
@EndlessMotorWorks
@EndlessMotorWorks 6 месяцев назад
I would recommend reading the codes that have been stored using STAR diagnostics. Most likely the rear SAM module has incurred some water damage (quite common on these MLs). Issues with the rear SAM module can result in all kinds of electrical gremlins, specially related to the lights.

@@EndlessMotorWorks spot on mate! Cleaned connectors and it's up and running. Aux belt tore the next day. And now engine management light. Brilliant past two months for the Merc 😂
@EndlessMotorWorks

@@skyhghmclvn25 If you got corrosion in the connectors of the rear SAM, I would recommend replacing the gasket on that side taillight. It is the location from where water tends to drip onto it. If that gasket gets really bad, when you pressure wash the car, it will flood the chamber where the rear SAM is located and then it is game over for it.

Thank you for great video. I replaced my actuator in this way, successfully, however now it makes a clicking noise like the motor is cycling when the car is turned off. What do I do now? Yes, I fitted a new (cheaper than Mercedes genuine) actuator, now the lock is working ok BUT I hear a regular clicking noise, every 1.5 minutes. Sounds like the motor is trying to work (to do something) inside the actuator unit. Makes this noise when tailgate is in closed position (even makes this clicking noise after using a screwdriver to simulate tailgate is closed). Btw - it doesn't make the noise when engine running, nor when tailgate is simply in the horizontal open position. Please can you help to resolve, as I fear this will flatten the battery. Thanks in advance.
@EndlessMotorWorks

Two things to check. Is your trunk aligned properly? Meaning the striker that the lock latches to needs to be int he correct position. If it is loose or not where it should be, it can trick the latch into thinking the trunk isn't properly closed, thus causing it to cycle the soft close actuator. The other possibility is that the new lock actuator itself is faulty.
@MrMSmith

@@EndlessMotorWorks Thank you, so very much. Please note that even if I simulate the tailgate being closed (so with the tailgate out flat in the air I get it to 'lock' by putting a screwdriver where the latch would go and then removing the screwdriver, thus no chance of any latch misalignment etc) it still regularly (every 90 seconds) makes this noise, trying to soft close - so it's attempting to soft close onto thin air. So, I got back to the supplier of the (non-mercedes part) actuator and they very kindly sent me a replacement - but having now fitted this replacement it makes exactly the same noise and at just the same regularity. I am wondering if the cause of this is that my ML is recognising that this is not a genuine Mercedes part and so whether you know of any kit I could buy to repair the original actuator, then hopefully when I put that back onto the tailgate (having fixed it) it might well be ok? Also, I wonder, has anyone else ever experienced this continuous cycle of the soft close actuator? Many thanks for any help you can give, I am most grateful.

@@MrMSmith There is no way for the vehicle to recognize whether this part is genuine or not. It just a basic actuator and motor inside. The part which I used is also not genuine Mercedes-Benz, but it works just fine. I would suggest ask for a refund and just get another "better" part. I don't know if you are in Europe, but personally buy all of my parts from Autodoc and I have always been satisfied with the quality. If you are located in the US, FCP Euro and ECS Tunning are reputable retailers that sell quality parts.

Heard you have to put power on the battery so it doesn't drain it while doing the repair or will mess with the computer.

Bro how can I open it ,it’s close and i can’t open it
@EndlessMotorWorks
@EndlessMotorWorks 2 года назад
Good question! If the latch has failed in the closed position you will need to gain access to the trunk from the inside. Fold the seats flat and climb inside. Once you are into the trunk take a look at the bottom part of the trim roughly where the latch is situated. You will see that there is a small plastic piece that can be removed. Take that piece out and inside you will see a small lever. It is mechanically connected to the latch. Once you move it to the side, the trunk will open.

Yes, it's quite a common failure point on the early, pre-facelift ML W164 and GL X164.
@Rjisawake
@Rjisawake 2 года назад
@@EndlessMotorWorks what's that cost usually?
@EndlessMotorWorks
@EndlessMotorWorks 2 года назад
@@Rjisawake Depends on where you will be doing the repair. The dealer will surely charge somewhere in the lines of $500-$750. At an indie shop, probably half that. The part itself, if buying a good quality aftermarket one like I did, costs $120. There are also some cheaper no-brand variants on ebay, but I don't recommend going that route.
