How to Replace a FlowTite Push/Pull Valve with a Standard Shut Off Valve for a Dishwasher

We are replacing a FlowTite push/pull valve under our sink. We are replacing it with a standard shut off value so work with the inlet pipe of our new KitchenAid dishwasher. These push/pull valves make it difficult to replace the water line due to the compression of the line. Replacing it with a standard value allows you to replace the water line if needed especially when replacing the dishwasher. This is a helpful tip in case your shut off valve under your sink is leaking.

Technical what if question. Could you have used a push connect one piece supply line (if you were willing to spend the extra money) rather than cementing a new valve? Thanks for sharing your expertise.

Great Video - my exact issues - the crimped end started leaking after connecting the new dishwasher - I went to Home Depot, Lowes, and 2 local hardware stores and no-one had ever seen the push valve. I thought I was stuck with a plumber, but now have a way to fix it myself - thanks for posting.

Use a small pipe cutter and place it on body of that plastic valve and slowly cut into it, then you will be able to disassemble it and not mess up your pipe. After removing the valve, install a threaded brass fitting so that you can thread on a new brass valve.
@kez850
@kez850 5 месяцев назад
That’s exactly what I did since the cpvc sticking out was already a minimal amount. Now I can just thread on new valves in 10-15 years 👍

Cheap home builders. That's who. The one building this house was notorious for being cheap, cutting corners and doing a lot of wrong things. Our house was built in 2005 and has all sorts of things wrong that we found, such as the exterior vinyl around some windows causing water leaks, our sliding glass door leaks due to bad install, etc. Luckily I was able to fix this myself and get the dishwasher installed. Thanks for watching. I'm sorry you ran into the same problem. Hope you got it fixed.

You're installing cpvc incorrectly. The cement isn't actually glue, it's a chemical reaction that fuses the two surfaces together. For that reason, you only rotate a 1/4 to no more than a 1/2 turn. Your twisting it as much as you do will likely result in leaks at some point.

Thank you. The two things I learned is that I was not happy with the crimped on supply hose to the dishwasher. The other is how cheap these plastic parts are. I replaced the kitchen faucet two weeks ago and had to replace those valves too since one didn't work at all (would not turn). This house is only 16 years old and the valves are not reliable. I'm hoping the new valves work longer. Thank you for watching.

I'm sorry. When we finally reviewed my footage of the install, it was incomplete. It was midnight when I was trying to install the dishwasher, and it was the worst/most difficult install I ever had. The flooring is unlevel, the clearance was tight, and I almost was unable to remove the old dishwasher due to the brackets kept snagging on the cabinets. I think it might have been entertaining for others to watch, but from a practicable viewpoint, there was nothing good about watching me install it. I might had to drink some beer before reliving the experience (if I had made a video of it). I'm sorry about the delay. I'm glad you enjoyed this video.

Thanks for showing this process. I have a simple question. why cannot you use the original Flowtite push/pull valve with the new dishwasher? It was working with the old dishwasher.
@farmereboo
@farmereboo Год назад
Thank you for asking. This valve had a crimped connection to a dishwasher water supply vinyl tubing. That is, when I bought a new stainless steel water supply line, it could not connect to the push/pull valve. The old dishwasher was disgusting, and I wanted to remove everything connected to it and start over with my new dishwasher. If I had more room, I could have just cut the line to the valve and remove it that way. In this case, I wanted to preserve as much CPVC line as possible in order to install my new valve, which then allowed me to install my new stainless steel line. I hope that all makes sense. Thank you very much for watching. We appreciate it.
@BlueRidgeMountainHomestead
@BlueRidgeMountainHomestead Год назад
Thank you. The Flowtite valve is connected to a crimped vinyl water supply line for the dishwasher. In other words, there is no way to remove the vinyl line and replace with anything, such as my new stainless steel line. That was the main reason. The other reason is that these valves are very cheaply made and can leak with no repair option other than removing it. Thus I feel I killed two birds with one stone.

I would think if your push/pull valve is still operational that you can still use it. Many people hate them and want to get rid of it due to reliability issues. I only ditched mine because I didn't like the crimped dishwasher water supply line.

With toilets I would guess the valve in the tank could be bad or the valve in the bathroom near the toilet could be bad. You would have to isolate them to see if you have water coming to the valve in the tank (if not then see if you have water coming to the valve outside the tank). But due to possible messes, you may need to turn off the water to the house and have someone inspect the valve for you. I don't wish plumbing troubleshooting on anyone. I hope the best for you.

I'm not a plumber, but if you can talk to one or to someone more knowledgeable. Perhaps you cut it out and sweat a set of connectors as needed to put in a valve more compatible with copper piping.

Better pray that valve doesn't blow off you'll be in deep sit problem with most plumbers is shut off valves are so tight to wall you cant cut it,then your cutting open walls cabinets etc extending pipe

When you glue pvc pipe connection the scratches and rough surface where the glue touches it actually make connection stronger, so there was no reason to cut the part of the pvc pipe with the rough surface.
@BlueRidgeMountainHomestead
@BlueRidgeMountainHomestead 2 года назад
Thank you. I agree. I don't mind a little roughness, but am concerned about anything deep. That metal part that digs into the CPVC can be a problem. I just wanted it to have less chance of something leaking since this had to be a "one and done", unlike outdoor pvc/sprinker piping repairs where you have lots of room.

Sorry about that. This was a piece of my dishwasher install. I filmed most of that install and will have to edit it. If you do come back to watch that video, I'll be sure to put a part in there of the dishwasher filling up. Perhaps bonus points if I film a part with turning this valve off so you can see (and hear) the water stop filling. Nothing about this was fun, but it's over (and it works). No leaks since I did this.

A little more information. About two weeks ago when I replaced the kitchen faucet, one of the valves would not turn. This house is only 16 years old. The other valve turned, but I decided to replace them. I used Ace Hardware's 1/4 turn ball valves. The one in this video cost around $9 and not sure of it's "cheapness" or ability to work after 10 years. Ditto on the more expensive Ace Hardware valves. But we'll see. Hope you enjoyed this video.

Flow "tite" vales are junk. Pushing and pulling on it will loosen it up and cause it to leak.

@BlueRidgeMountainHomestead 2 года назад
This was a total surprise to me. This is the first house that I have lived in that was built around 2005, thus having these in there. The fact that the supply hose was crimped to this junk really set me off. I'm not saying any other valve won't fail because I already had a few that needed replacement. But as you said, these things will leak if you start pushing/pulling on them. It had to go!
