I told my friend that I’d help him install a rear main seal (I didn’t know what that was tbh) and I found this video and helllll to the nahhhhh guy friend! Take your ass to the mechanic shop!!
5 min into the vid and I can just tell this dude is a great mechanic, question bro I got a 2014 Silverado 1500 is it similar the work for the Tahoe and silverado ? I cant find no videos on it
Best tip is get rags and wipes to clean up everything and if you are one to wear the latex gloves for mechanics, do so. But really it's just a tranny pull and replacing a gasket. If you can do those then no problem. I got half way done and realized it was my two piece oil pan gasket that the professional mechanic did when he replaced the tranny and fucked up from previous owner a couple months ago. Yeah idk how
Well done. It's amazing to see machined surfaces as pristine and clean as the last time they saw daylight. Thank you for taking the time to document this procedure.
You're an excellent mechanic and I loved the video it's a big help although I have a 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe what they 5.3 vortec rear seal leaking did know anything about it until I ran across your video thank you you helped me out a lot
Thanks, you inspired me to do this. It was the toughest job I've ever done. Didn't have a lift. One trick that allowed us to access the top transmission mounting bolts was to remove the cross brace under the engine to allow it to drop by a couple of inches. That made all the difference. Had a helper, we took our time and it took FOUR days. Your video was very well done. Thanks again!
There is no reason to dislike this video. I am not a mechanic but very capable. After watching this it gave me the confidence to do it my self. I am currently diving head first into this job in my driveway with basic hand tools. This video had not left my YT app since ive started. Great job guys keep up the good work.
great video sr. I do the same thing I am a mechanic in mexico and all the parts that I take off I put the bolts in. So that I know that where the bolts go. thank you for the videos.
I'm all honesty. It is a big job but it is doable at home. The hardest part for me was the to Bell house bolt. I didn't have the right wobble head. I recommend using 1/4 or 3/8 sockets for that one as space is limited. Great video!
Great Video man! I appreciate it! Im just going to add oil and invest in cat litter until I Rebuild the transmission and replace the transfer case. 🤣 Ill deal with the seal while I'm in there.
why would i do that ? the customer wanted it fixed, not some hope in a bottle, some jobs require work and no easy fix is available but do u Thank you please like, share, and subscribe, also please check out my other channel Salem Taxi, on RU-vid for more material on a different level.
I pretty sure I’m having issues with rear seal leaking on my 2009 Escalade hybrid 6.0 L, I’m starting to get small puddles of oil drippings in my garage, and lately when I change my oil the oil pan and the cross member is soaked in oil. I am a DIYer with some basic mechanical knowledge, and I Usually try to fix things on my own, like the fuel pump, injectors, plugs, wires, sensors, ecu, etc, I do have plenty of jack stands and heavy duty jacks, but unfortunately no vehicle lift....that being said is this job only possible using a lift? I don’t want to waste time on trying to fix something that is next to impossible...how much would I expect to pay a shop for a job like this, labor and parts included ? Can someone give me a rough estimate? ...I have watched several videos of the GM 6.0L having the rear main seal changed and it doesn’t look complicated just looks VERY labor intensive....I’ve also noticed since mine is the hybrid version, I DO NOT have several of the parts that get in the way such as starter, alternator, and maybe a couple other parts, However It does have a few hybrid components, but I’m not sure if they are in the way....and another question I have is, should I also have the oil pan seal replaced since it will be dropped? Just to be safe? Would that cost a lot more money or would it be easier since it’s already disassembled? Please anyone with any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
This job has very tuff and stressful does anyone no how to reinstall the transfer case back to the housing extension... Ant tricks out There it's to hard to get back on
Other than copious amounts of oil everywhere, how did you determine it was the rear main seal instead of valve cover gaskets, intake valley pan gasket, oil pressure sender etc.? Did you open the flexplate inspection cover? And if so what did you see? Many thanks!
Thank you !!! I have a leaking RMS on a 2001 SUB with 5.3 ! I've put 'BLUE' something(?) in the oil and it appears to have stopped the leak !! So , I haven't decided whether or not to fix or just keep adding the Blue stuff every oil change !?
Hey bro, you’re not replacing the rear main seal on a motor, you’re replacing it on an engine. By definition a motor is electrically powered and an engine creates its own power by means of combustion of fuel.
I don't understand why nobody said in all those videos on how to replace the rear main seal that, you have to put the transfer case in neutral before removing it. Or it will not go back in or come out easy..if you don't do it . Detailed information is always a important factor
Well it's pretty funny the transfer case finally slid in place right after I put the transfer case in neutral.. That's why it didn't come out easy ...I walk the talk in life
Awesome job making it simple to understand. It looks above my level. What would the average cost be to pay a shop to do this job? I'm in Florida if it matters any.
@@bowtiebuilding so ok i had my pipe cut and welded and rear seal replaced but now seems like misfiring and doesnt really want to get up. Is it because something isnt screwed on properly or because he cut pipe wnd maybe didnt weld it correctly? Have 2013 chevy tahoe 5.3 motor. Also do they have idol trouble as well?
@@KCultureHomes if it is t welded all the way around and leaks before your bank 2 (downstream) O2 sensor then the PCM will make your air fuel mixture rich or lean. Always take a look to see if there’s something easy like unplugged wires or sensors. Always try to rule out the easy stuff first.
Removing the engine. Wich i think is more convenient since you can regasket the whole engien while is out. In my case that's what ill do. I have a engine lift. But it wont happen till i get home. Im working far from home. And ill just keep on adding oil and flushin the oil that comes out
(17:37 minuets of getting ready to be there, and still not showing access to the rear main seal.) Be sure to look for the second part to see the seal change, U-tube algorism didn't show the second part when I viewed the 1st part. The Man doing the photography does a good job showing things to look for and remove. A rear main seal failure that causes oil stains on the driveway is going to happen when the engine has 100,000 to 2000,000 miles on it, If the Transmission hasn't been rebuilt in that time and you still value the truck, I would suggest that this job should include a transmission rebuild as well as the rear main seal replacement. Since removing the transmission is part of replacing the rear seal and the instruction is how to get to the point of replacing the seal, this information is valuable. By doing this work as well as having the 4l60E transmission upgraded you will save a ton of money.
I am planning to do this in October when it cools off here. Not looking forward to it lol. But your video is one of the best how to vids on RU-vid. Really learned a lot.
did you do it yourself, did you clean the end of the crankshaft, did you install the seal correctly, did you pre-lube the seal? Idk. with out seeing the car
My uncle did it for me my mechanic said that it wasn't worth fixing because when the rear main seal breaks it will break again even though you replace it. I didn't replace with a whole kit like you did on your video which By the way was great. I only replaced the circle seal. I'm going to go at it again next weekend with a kit like you did but I wanted to ask your opinion if your rear main seal starts leaking is it fixable or will it always leak???
@@glorytoallah753 I'm talking about the 2 long bolts he had to lower the exhaust line to remove i did it my self by cutting a bout an inch of the thread then removed them without lowering the exhaust line
how much did you charge (labor wise, not including parts) for this job? i just got a request to do one (im the neighborhood mechanic) and need a ballpark... thanks
labor rate are much higher then that and also it depends on the car. Thank you please like, share, and subscribe, also please check out my other channel Salem Taxi, on RU-vid for more material on a different level.
