How to Replace a Snowblower Shave Plate: MTD and More

This video covers removing and installing the shave plate on an MTD snowblower. As a part of this repair, the skid shoes are removed and adjusted for height as well. Many other snowblowers, such as Cub Cadet and Craftsman are similar.

Nice video. I’m ready to replace my shave plate and found that the auger housing is bent up real good. I don’t think it could be bent to straight the way it is, wondering if I should cut that part of the housing away altogether and add some clearance with the shoes.

great video, thanks for the idea on repair. I neglected to move shoes and tore my blade up greatly. This will help with my direction on how to repair.

I like the scraper bar on my craftsman 5/22: it is. A nice heavy metal around 11 guage, it has slotted holes for adjustment, and it is reversible so when it wears down it can me replaced. If the skid plates are adjusted correctly, the scraper bar will not rub on the pavement and should last forever!

I agree that being reversible is a fine feature. But I didn't feel that bad about having to replace mine after 26 years. I still haven't seen a driveway or sidewalk so perfectly level that no part of a skid plate will ever make contact. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I'm doing something similar on my old Ariens, but am also going to add 'surfacing welds' (building up the wear surface) on the skid shoes so that I never need to buy new ones! If the built-up layer ever wears down, more weld can always be added. I had to weld in a metal patch panel on my lower bucket area also.

Oh my gosh, get those shoes off and prime/paint those ends! Someone also told me to store it with the scraper edge resting on a piece of wood. Seems like a good idea to keep it dry and rust free, but might be suburban folklore.

Not installed correctly. Goes on the outside on the ends of the auger housing.

I have a MTD Model Series 611 and the manual's exploded view shows the shave plate mounting UNDER the housing assy. But I could not make this work; ended up putting it on top.

The ends of the shave plate go on the outside of the blower not tucked inside of the housing

I'm sure this positioning may vary from one manufacturer to another and even one model to another from the same manufacturer.

Ok. I’m watching this 3yrs late because i just discovered there used to be a shave plate on my 2 stage snowblower. As I’m watching this video and i admit i did not watch until the end, but aren’t the new bolts being put in upside down??? I back tracked the video and it appears the angle grinder is going at the head of the bolt from underneath. Am I seeing things? Won’t the new bolts drastically scrape the driveway? Or not??

I checked. There's plenty of clearance underneath. The shave plate I installed was not identical to the original and neither is the hardware I used.

nice video, going thru the same job with my craftsman snowblower. Did the shave plate bolts coming out the bottom drag on the ground at all? or did the height adjustment on the skid plates give them enough clearance?
@TheOriginalMechanic
@TheOriginalMechanic 5 лет назад
I wondered about this too. Once the skid plates were adjusted for 1/8" shave plate ground clearance, the bolts were a half inch off the ground. Those bolts should be no more than 5/8" long and these can be hard to find. I cut 1" bolts down to size.

I have an MTD snowblower and i noticed the front corners on yours are also bent in slightly. Is this a manufacturing thing? I was given the snowblower by my grandparents last year and it ran good. They seem to be bent in quite a bit and I'm worried it will catch the auger.
@TheOriginalMechanic
@TheOriginalMechanic 3 года назад
I think they are factory bent that way as aid to guide the snow inward. As far as catching on the auger, a bent or loose shave plate is far more of a danger lol.

@@TheOriginalMechanic I bent them back a hair before i got this message. Just went out and fired it up. Forgot i took the plug wire out after season and I'm like wtf, oh the plug isn't connected

LOL...I am doing the exact same job on my 30 year old MTD. Question - the original shave plate did not have the right angle bends on each end of the shave plate like my new one has...do those ends mount on the outside...or the inside of the auger housing? Looks like you put them inside. Seems either way I will have to bend on side of the housing either inward or outward a tad to get perfect fit. Thanks!

I ran into the same situation. I mounted the bends on the inside of the auger housing. And yeah, it wasn't a perfect fit either.

I not understand why blade goes inside not under like shovel's to protect the housing from bending.

I thought the same thing. Design flaw?

I can't find a replacement shave plate since MTD no longer makes it! What now? Are they interchangeable with other manufacturer's parts?
@TheOriginalMechanic
@TheOriginalMechanic Год назад
I don't know. Many of them are similar. As I recall the one I used wasn't identical to the original but it did work out OK.

Where did you purchase the shave plate and product number please
@TheOriginalMechanic
@TheOriginalMechanic 7 месяцев назад
I found it on Amazon if I recall correctly. The part number from my owner's manual is 784-5581. This fits MTD model 313-610E000 and other 24" wide makes. Ideally you should look this up in your owner's manual to make sure it will fit.

I have the some one. Does the shave plate wrap around the outside of the sheetmetal? I just took the old one off and that’s how it was on there.

My replacement fit on the inside. I don't recall how the original fit. My video offers no clue either.

I haveban older MTD 5/22 that has the scraper bar rapped around the outside. I'm guessing that's factory spec for this machine. I doubt it makes much difference eather way.

how did you get the shave plate on so even when the housing you attached it to looked so bent and wavy?

If you have shear pins you're supposed to replace with shear pins, not shear bolts. And vice versa.
