I like the way that you continuously tested the part before you replaced it. Nice job!👍

Wish some one had a video on a Ariens 27 deluxe that would have been great! I removed a lot I didn't have to.

I helped out someone on Reddit the other day where they could not figure out what was going on with the machine and it was the ignition coil. Not a common issue, so it seems to stump people.

Can it still be the ignition coil if it starts, runs then quickly sputters and dies (with a puff of smoke)?
@small_engine_repair
@small_engine_repair Год назад
That is hard to answer. When you say quickly, is that a few seconds or a minute?

Excellent breakdown, great video. I've got an Ariens 24'' blower and the wire got pulled out of the boot. What's the best way of getting it back in there? It's pin hole and tight fit going into that boot. I'm a little stumped

Bring it inside and let it warm up. Then start working it back in. Yeah its a pain in the butt!!!

luckily there was no spark with the cloud of fuel that kept blowing out , not an issue until it goes boom in your face

True Bill. I have luckily only tried to burn my garage down once. I had a riding mower that had flooded the engine case and I was clearing the cylinders of gas by turning the key and cranking the engine. Spark plug wire was just sitting right and it ignited the gas on the engine and on the floor. I always have a fire extinguisher sitting on the shelf for that reason.

That little black wire the grounds the “run” position. If that wire is out can the coil spark?

yes

@@small_engine_repair I have that wire out, the wires that go to the key in. And the magneto is hooked up and it still won’t spark. What do I do? I cleaned the flywheel with degreaser including the magnetic part. Do you think that affects it?

951-10646, but double check that to make sure it is the right one.

Great video! I have a 2002 cub cadet that is impossible to hand start, even with new spark plug and fresh gas, primed 7 pumps, and can only start using the electric start (giving it a go 5 or 6 times using 6-second bursts before it actually starts). I was looking to get a replacement ignition coil, but I'm having difficulty. I see a label on the engine that says: HMSK85 155906B ENGINE FAMILY: 1TPYS3182BF 318 DISPLACEMENT MODEL: 31AH5C3F100 MFG CODE: 1H311B10241. Instead of an ignition coil, I found what they call "Tecumseh 611104 ALT COIL" selling for $173.48 - which seems awfully high to me just for a coil. Can you tell me what kind of ignition coil/alt coil I need and where I can buy a replacement ignition coil for the snowblower mentioned above? (I live in the states)

Mike, there are usually two symptoms of a bad coil that I have experienced. One, it is just bad and will never provide the current drop the spark plug needs. You get no spark or weak spark. Two, after running for sometime, the engine will start running bad, miss fires, rpm up and down, and just then just dies. Based on what you have said I am not sure the problem is coil related, unless you have checked the spark on a new plug and it is really weak. Once you do get it running, how does it run over a period of time, say 10 to 15 minutes? The issue could be carburation related. Visit www.jackssmallengines.com/jacks-parts-lookup/manufacturer/tecumseh/4-cycle-horizontal/hmsk-085/hmsk85-155905b/engine-parts-list-1 and look for part number 35135B. The options list three different parts that are available. Google search those part numbers and find the best deal. But, only buy it if you have checked the carburetor and the spark.

@@small_engine_repair Thank you so much for getting back to me! You make a very good point! We got 16 inches of snow and I used that snowblower for 45 minutes straight with no issue. I then went on the roof and cleared the snow and used the snowblower for another 1 hour and 30 minutes with no issue picking up the snow that fell to the ground. I was in need of a snowblower and this one was given to me all extremely rusted - I sanded it all down to bare metal, spray painted it with rust-inhibitive primer, and 2 coats of Majic heavy duty alkyd enamel cub cadet yellow spray paint from Tractor Supply. The carb that was on it was in sad shape, so I bought an exact replacement and that is what is in there now (since this past December). I bought a Performance tool w86554 inline ignition spark tester on Amazon and it is due to come in on Saturday. I'm anxious to see what kind of spark will come out of that tester. If the spark is weak, does that warrant replacing the coil? If I have a strong spark, I'm not sure what else to replace to get it to start easier. Should I take it apart to see what the gap is on that coil? Given how rusty this snowblower used to be, would it be beneficial to sand down both screw ends of the current coil, and magnet, to make better contact? If so, would 220-grit sand paper do the trick to remove that rust buildup on those areas? Thank you for the coil reference! I'll definitely let you know how I make out once that tester arrives on Saturday

Yes do check the gap of the coil to the flywheel. I always use a business card to make sure the gap is correct. Now after you explanation, new carb, rust, etc., I am now kind of wondering if the valves are out of adjustment. Both should be at .006" (.15 mm).

@@small_engine_repair Great news! I had spare time this morning so even though the spark tester hasn't arrived yet, I was too excited to wait on the condition of the coil, so I took it apart and found something. The two screws holding the coil in were way loose AND the gap was way wider than a business card. I gapped it back to the spacing of a business card and secured the screws. I put everything back, full throttle, full choke, pressed the primer bulb 3 times making sure to cover the center air hole, pulled the cord until taught, and gave it a yank. It started effortlessly on the first try! I was stoked! All is now working as it should. Thanks so much for your time and input :) You made my day!
