How to Replace a Timing Belt Tensioner; 2006 Honda Odyssey | Garage Story

This week I'm changing out the timing belt tensioner on my dad's 2006 Honda Odyssey. The engine has been making a rattling sound, coming from the passenger side, and my research indicates it could be the tensioner, so I'm changing it out, and getting to try out some of my new tools!

I love the satisfaction you had when you used the impact. Great video man. I am about to tackle this job on a 2015 and this video is perfect.

Thanks! Hopefully the 2015 is pretty similar to the 2006 I did this on. It’s not a super hard job to do, just takes a little time.

Fast dirty way to get it done: take out the 2 10mm bolts holding the old tensioner on, pull old tensioner out, take dremel tool and cut the timing belt cover so that the pin holding the new tensioner can pass (it is about a 1 inch long cut right at the top of the hole the tensioner came out of, about 1/8 inch width hole), stick new tensioner in passing the pull pin through the Dremel cut you made, pull the pin out, J and B weld (epoxy) the hole you made, and done. This was the right approach for my high mileage, leaking oil, getting ugly car and got it done in 30 minutes with minimal work. The replacement cover, should you ever care to replace it, is 75 bucks... Can mess with replacing that the next time you have the belt done at the shop...

Enjoyed your video ! I didn't see much on accessory belt but that's OK! I'm glad I did it but before I replaced the tensioner I replaced my fuel injectors & adjusted my valves they were loose for sure! Sounds like your dad's is too! Haha. My tensioner quits making noise after 5 min of warm up but it bothers me so I'm changing it. Got 300,000 on it going for 400,000.

oh that infamous bolt. I solved that issue. (removing without an impact). By going an getting about 6ft of pipe and using that at the end or a 1/2 drive braker bar. pops that bolt right out. and it works every time. I use an extension and a small jack stand for the pivot point to rest the extension on . Have never seen a video about. Leverage is your friend when you can make room. Also There is a Harmonic Balancer Socket for Honda that works wonders, they make it in 17mm, 19mm and 24mm. Also works every time.

There is another guy that replaced it without taking anything off except the tensioner. And while inserting it in the hole he only had to turn the crank just a little clockwise with 19 mm. And it went right in.

So he didn’t remove the harmonic balancer? Nice!

Is it the same as doing a 2013 Honda Accord V6 and 2002 V6 timing belt as well? I've done those two bfore. Now I got an Odyssey making a similar noise but not as loud as start up. And it smokes a little at light throttle only. Not on start up at all. Just light throttle. When I hard throttle it I either see none of very little. I was thinking valve seals but it don't smoke at cold start up.
@garagestory
@garagestory Год назад
Excellent question! Unfortunately, I don’t have a great answer 😄. I don’t know if it would be the same or not. There a few generations between 2002 and 2013.

what are the risks to let them running with the noise? please let me know thanks
@garagestory
@garagestory 2 года назад
Hello! Are you referring to the top end noise? Or the timing belt slapping? The timing belt slapping I theory could lead to the belt jumping time, coming off entirely, or breaking. All of those could ruin the engine. The top end noise I don’t think is as much of a concern, just a sign of some miles on it. But I can’t say for sure on either case. I am not an expert at all with the Honda Odyssey’s.

What was the torque when you reinstalled the crank nut?
@garagestory
@garagestory 2 года назад
I can’t remember what the proper torque is off the top of my head. The manual should say. I think I may have just used my 1/2” impact to put it back on.

Considering having mine replaced, would u recommend replacing the timing belt while your down there?
@garagestory
@garagestory 2 года назад
That’s hard to say. I think it really depends on how long it’s been since the belt was last replaced. In my case, the belt had been changed recently, so there was no need to change it again.

The timing belt? I marked it so it could go back the same. I can’t remember if it tried to move or not. Marking it to the pulley is pretty quick, so I’d definitely recommend doing that.

Is that top engine sound normal?
@garagestory
@garagestory 2 года назад
I think some top end noise is normal for higher mileage engines like this. It’s got around 250k on it. It has had some noise like that for awhile, but runs great! It could probably stand the top end to be re-done, but it’s not really worth it for the value of the van at this point. The timing belt tensioner was a much louder more obvious noise.
