How to replace a non impact single hung to PGT WinGuard Single Hung series 7700A, hurricane impact single hung. We are a licensed and insured window and door contractor with 30+ years of experience through out the southeast coast of Florida. In this video we will walk you through the proper steps to install a single hung window to current engineering code.
HURRICANE PROTECTION
WinGuard® products can withstand repeated impact from a nine-pound 2’ by 4’ beam traveling at 34 miles per hour, followed by hurricane-force winds. Even if the glass is damaged, it remains securely in its frame, keeping the elements outside.
UV PROTECTION
The clear interlayer used in WinGuard® Aluminum products filters out 99% of UV rays, helping your furniture, carpet, artwork, and drapes retain their original beauty.
NOISE REDUCTION
WinGuard® windows and doors significantly reduce ambient noise by absorbing sound rather than transmitting it, keeping outside disruptions where they belong.
PEACE OF MIND
The durable interlayer used in WinGuard® products keeps glass in place and provides an additional barrier that deters intruders by preventing breakage.
GLASS TYPE COMPARISON
Glass breakage patterns vary greatly depending on treatment and construction. WinGuard® laminated products may crack if impacted, but keep glass pieces adhered to the laminate and secure in the frame. Conversely, single pane annealed glass will fracture into large shards and will not be held in the frame after breaking.
10-YEAR WARRANTY
WinGuard® products are backed by our solid warranty. Whether aluminum or vinyl, WinGuard® units come with a limited lifetime warranty on insulating glass units and a 10-year warranty on laminated glass units.

Can't thank you enough for your excellent videos. I am just a homeowner trying to educate myself because I need more hurricane windows but when I did half of my house 5 years ago, the city inspector had to fail the job because they didn't install bucks. I had no idea what a buck was and I learned quickly. From the inside he was able to put his penknife through the caulking the entire way and he told me without bucks the windows would blow in in a hurricane. The company did one window correctly, but didn't install bucks on the other 6 openings. So you couldn't even write it off as ignorance, I'm glad the inspector made them come back they had to take all of the windows out and do them over again but they only used really thin pieces of wood that look like shim material. It wasn't as thick as the bucks that you're using. God help me in the next hurricane I don't know if they even did them right the second time. I wish you worked on the west coast of Florida because I still need more hurricane windows and now I'm having difficulty finding anyone who is conscientious. Your videos are wonderful and I have to say you are an exceptional contractor. Thanks for being so conscientious, your customers are very fortunate to have you.

I notice on windows installed in wood homes there is much more flashing work. Is a simple bead of caulking enough to seal out the window frame in a window installed in concrete?

I came on here to mention flashing. When I installed an impact window in my old house, I followed that particular manufacturer’s instructions and they called for flashing on the sill.

Do you have to replace the wood (bucks?)
@mikesaluminumspecialties
@mikesaluminumspecialties 3 года назад
In most cases yes. Upgrading from non impact to impact window comes with wider frames. And the bucks need to be changed to reflect that. With pressure treated wood. We prefer 1 x 6, which can be split to make 2- 2 5/8 inch width for sides.

@@mikesaluminumspecialtiesHi Mike. When you say measure to the 1/8, are you basically saying use the exact measurement (stucco to stucco) for ordering the replacement window/slider or are you saying to deduct an 1/8 from your measurements when ordering the replacement window/slider? Thx buddy
@anonymousbyproxy8250
@anonymousbyproxy8250 4 месяца назад
@@jimjones7066 I think that one shall leave 1/8 “ per each side as a space between buck and window frame. If the frame is even slightly larger it may not fit in, but if it is smaller long strips can be place between buck and frame (like he is doing towards the end of the video).

@mikesaluminumspecialties

If your installing a single hung window, you should not have too. Since their are no fastener going into the bottom of the frame. A horizontal roller window is a different story.

OK I was hoping to see a buck with eight horns or more then I realized you were talking about Wood. What is the thickness of the buck and what are you using ? Is it pre-treated? Is it like a one by four?Do you have to rip it to size? I suppose you do since the window is probably thicker. I come from the north where we have wood structured houses I’ve never changed out the Masonary window but I’m going to attempt it lol
@mikesaluminumspecialties
@mikesaluminumspecialties Год назад
We use Pressure treated 1 x 6 x 8 or 12. Then rip it down to 2 5/8” or the width of the window frame. Just make sure you razor the caulking around the window best you can to avoid masonry damage. It may be easier to take the glass out completely and collapse the window frame inward.
@fixaajets

What if you already have that window but you need to remove the sliding glass window to do a repair on the glass how would you do that?
@mikesaluminumspecialties
@mikesaluminumspecialties Год назад
If your dealing with an older single hung window. Where the bottom sash opens by lifting up. There are usually metal or plastic clips inside the sides of the frame that are made to catch the balancers and frees up the window to allow u to remove it. To do that use a flat head screw driver and gently push up. It should push out a little bit.

I'm not at all an expert but I've been looking into this for my own place. I believe it's code that the buck be at least the width of the window frame. I don't believe it would pass inspection if less.

Do you ever have to cut the stucco to get the old window out and install new ones? It looks like my stucco is on top of the old window frame.
@mikesaluminumspecialties
@mikesaluminumspecialties 2 года назад
I recommend trying to deglaze the glass from the frame of the window before attempting to remove the window. By doing this it will allow you to pry the frames inwards towards each other. This will optimize your chances of not doing too much damage to preexisting stucco.
@seagel1000
@seagel1000 Год назад
You’ll have to grind away that stucco using a angle grinder and the proper masonry disc for filing down masonry. I suggest cutting at the drywall instead of the cutting the window opening with the finish (stucco usually) since it’s easier and less messier than cutting masonry and being exposed to all those elements and mess. Make sure to caulk two lines of 1/4” beads of a nice thick urethane (think OSI Quad) behind each wood buck to prevent air, water, bugs from going behind your wood. I go the extra mile and caulk on the seams of each corner and if you’re up to it, the seams where the edge of your wood buck meets the masonry. You essentially create 3-4 layers of caulking from all elements Incase water gets behind your window and into the home/substrate. I apply the same principal of “defense in layers” to the caulking around the window flange. From exterior to interior: exterior caulk, filler rod, window foam, filler/back rod, interior caulk. I’ve done this method after learning and studying hi performance building in the southern states. My windows are going on 3 years installed with no problems so far..
