It is not very difficult to replace a windshield washer pump (aka "washer pump") on your car. Replacement pumps usually cost less than $20 and can be installed without any tools!
That looks pretty easy and takes about 10 minutes. My quote from the Dealership was $425.00! I have it in writing. Never go to a dealership. Thank you for the video.
Thank you so much....I was just about to spend unnecessary money at the Hyundai dealership. Thank you for not letting them take advantage of this girl!!!!
This video was very very good. It was shot very clear, I could see what was being done and what parts needed to go where they belonged. I would recommend this to anyone seeking info on changing their windshield washer pump!
Quote from a mechanic was $40 for the part and $40 labour (of course they rip me off, I'm a girl) .... me finding this youtube vid, purchasing the part for $25 and installing it myself tomorrow.... much, much cheaper!!! Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge :)
Lemme just say thank you so much for this video!! I bought a pump last night for $18 and did everything you said in this video and IT FINALLY WORKS!! I GET MY WINDSHIELD CLEANED NOW (just in time for winter too). My brother wouldn't let me use his siphon hose so I just pulled the pump out and let it drain into a basin. Then I filtered before refilling the tank (since the old owner's of the car had it full to the brim). Sorry this is long, but I'm so excited that I actually fixed my own car for once even if it was minor. Thank you again for uploading, it was easier than I thought.
This video was perfect, honestly as easy as I thought it was going to be (had hoped it was going to be too). No BS, just straight and to the point... thanks man, go my sub if for nothing else than getting the job done.
Thanks for sharing! Very useful! Keep on the good work!! I have mine done at a workshop, costed me $119. Pump $49 (brand NICE, selling for $17.99 at retail shop) , $70 for labour. :( Feeling so stupid been ripped off!!! I am a girl don't have much experience and knowledge about cars.... In the future I will always check before hang in to the workshop!!!!!!!
I find most mechanics take advantage of women, especially if you don't know anything about cars...I recommend taking a very basic auto shop type class. Then you'll at least be able to fix some basic things yourself :-)
How easy it is depends on where the pump is located. Usually, its behind the wheel well which requires removal of the wheel well wall. I have a 2009 Honda CRV that requires removal of the entire front plastic bumper to get to it believe it or not.
I am trying to replace myself-thx for the video. I was quoted 2 hours labor(they would have to take the bumper off). $229 total which includes part at $47
my hood had to be replaced. and the part where the fluid actually sprays out onto the windshield was never connected to the hood.. what parts do I need to install the tubes back onto the hood? I hope I worded that correctly and you understood! thanks :)
My front ones work but by rear one never have, just passed so driving daily now & keep having to hand wash the rear window- any ideas how to deal with just a rear washer- I can’t hear any noise so I would think the pump has gone- thanks in advance!
This video made this job looks so simple and so easy I go to check my 2001 Toyota and thankfully for me they hid the washer reservoir deep in the depths of hell behind the the front bumper and next to the wheel well cover FML 🙃
Thanks for the informative video. Could you post a video on how to test the pump so one will be able to know if the problem is in the pump or the nozzles?
I have the same problem on my 08 f150, so my brother hold down the windshield wiper fluid button and I didn't hear a whirr, which means the motor is broken. if clogged you will hear the motor but no fluid
The location and arrangement of washer reservoir, pump and tubing are different in every cars. Ah, you are lucky that the arrangement/location for washer reservoir and its pump makes it easy to access. I am jealous. :) In my car, it is very difficult to access the pump. It seems that I have to remove the wing (front side cover) first, a task I am not ready to do yet. Such parts as EVAP canister and its related parts, fuel pressure regulator, intake valve timing control solenoid valve, etc are easy to access while I don't need to work on them (in near future), whereas this washer pump which I need to work on is very difficult to access, let alone the whole tubing (hose) which I need to check too.
That sucks. I understand that there are limitations but I wish engineers would try harder to position parts that commonly fail in easy to access places.
I know some people do modifications on several parts, some of which are unnecessary. So, perhaps, we can do modification to change the location/arrangement of this washer reservoir. For now, I can only imagine how to do that while thinking about its best location.
All cars are different. some are highly complex and may even require removal of headlight assemblies and or the entire bumper cover and or inner fender wheel well panel. Usually high en cars with powerful engines are the most complicated.
Windshield wipers work but no water. The pump is good (tested) but the electrical wires from the pump have been disconnected at wherever the source is. Need to find the source for these dangling wires. Help! Thanks. (1997 Buick Century)
What make is your car? Would this work for a 2001 Acura? I hope it is as easy as you made it look. Honda charges over $200 to replace and of course they have lots of add ons.
tell me what you think about it, is it just clogged or the pump is malfunctionning. the windshield washer gets squirted on my front window with no prob, but i have to hold it on with rear window for at least 3 second.
+Kenny J I don't know for that car specifically but it should be about the same. The pump design may be different and the location of the reservoir/pump may be different as well.
The pump sits in a hole at the bottom of the washer fluid reservoir. If you don't drain the fluid first, it will flow out as soon as you remove the old pump.
Just not sure if mine is the pump. It appears the fluid wont even go into the reservoir. No noise so could be pump. Noticed part of the tubing is gone also. Why this could not be easy as your video..
Went through each fuse previous owner stuck something into the fusebox that must have compromised the connection(100,000 miles later) anyway thanks for the vid
I would have thought the first thing to do would be check that the washer pump is getting power when the wiper/washer switch is on. Ensure the lines aren't blocked. I dunno. I can't begin to fathom how Acura design their electrical connectors such that they're impossible to disconnect. Arrrrrgh !!! Thanx so much for JapCrap.
+Makify1 so... Not quite as easy on my truck as your car. My pump was at the bottom of the reservoir. But your video definitely helped! Thank you so much!
It all depends on what car you have. I have a Buick Lacrosse 2005 CX and it looks like i will have to take out the whole battery and possibly a headlight to just get to see the rest of the reservoir. I think a mechanic could do it easier in my case. My car is a nightmare to fix anything with.
Mountain Lion You could have someone turn it on while you tried to listen/feel it working or you could remove it, hook it up to a 12v power supply, and see if it runs.
I think it's in a very awkward location in front of the driver's side front wheel under the car. You'll have to crawl under the car to see it but I think once you know where it is, you can just reach under the car and remove it with your hand. The plug is easier to get to. It is near the front of the car on the driver's side under the hood.
