How To Replace AMG Supercharger Bearing E55 SL55 CLS55 - Stop The Engine Noise !!

Replacement of the supercharger clutch bearing in a Mercedes Benz V8 kompressor. Bearing is Nachi part number 45BG07S5AIG-2DL or 45BG07S5DL . Before the repair my engine had a bad knocking sound that was almost like the rattle of a diesel engine. This repair eliminated the noise. I did this repair without any specialty tools, and the whole procedure is about 1 hour worth of work.

$3,531.50 MB (undisclosed which Dealer) estimate to "Replace Super Charger Pulley (Found Super Charge Pulley Damaged)" without guarantee to solve Chirp problem. $5,659.00 "Relace Complete Compresser (Possible Chirp Noise from Compressor)". 37 Minutes to watch your video twice (I am slow), $55.00 for bearing on EBay, 53 Minutes to complet repair (freezer took a while to cool bearing). Owe you big time for the how to video! PS, they wanted an additional $350 to replace the belt at the same time. THANKS!!!!!!!

Hi 5 almost a decade later. I did this job using this method today although used a heat gun rather than the oven. And protected the SC clutch from the clamps with adhesive cloth wiring tape. Worked precisely on all counts in around 1.5 hours allowing for freezer time. I lightly sanded the clutch face and smeared a little graphite powder on the mating surfaces = no more engagement 0:11 squeal either!

That's got to be one of the best tutorials I have ever seen. You set it at just the right level for me, no assumptions and no showboating, just someone having a go at something I have put off for a long time - I was so impressed I ordered the bearing within 60 secs of finishing and I am actually looking forward to swapping mine out - Thanks, this is what the internet is all about !

Justin Smith Thanks so much for the compliment. It's not a bad job to do, and if your car sounds like mine did, you'll be amazed at how quiet it is afterward.

That worked for me. Thanks for the video. I would add that loosening the bolt definitely needs a 15/16th wrench, which was bigger than any a had. No other tool will do. Bought the wrench for $7.99. The video shows the bolt loosening easily. I had to literally stand on the wrench as no amount of pulling by hand made it loose, despite using WD-40 30 minutes earlier. Standing on the wrench made the 2 hose clamps slip. Had to tighten them again and finally the bolt came loose. Pulley came out easily. There are at least 2 , perhaps as many as 4 very thin washers that stayed on the supercharger part behind where the pulley mounts. The bolt tightens onto a very thick washer that is hard to see in the video. The washer has 2 pin holes. The pins are on the superchargerrod oto which the pulley mounts and have to be aligned properly when reinstalling. New bearing would not slip into pulley. Too tight. I used a heart gun outside on my driveway to heat up the pulley rather than using the oven on a 97F day. Put the new bearing in the freezer for 30 minutes. Worked just like in the video. Unexpectedly, the hardest task was to slip the pulley back onto the supercharger rod. Had to try 6 or 7 times. It has to go in impossibly straight. After lots of wigglling and perspiration it finally went in. Used a blue thread locker on the bolt meant for regularly loosened parts to be safe and not permanently lock it as it was hard enough to loosen in the first place. Aligned the pins on pin holes on the washer then tightened the bolt as hard as I could pulling by by hand without standing on it as I had to do to loosen it. The second hardest part was getting the snap ring off and on as I did not have the right pliers, $39 for the exact made in Japan bearing part number as on original post with free shipping. Saw original Mercedes OEM pulley assembly with replacement bolt, 4 ultra thin washers, 1 thick washer and pulley for $1590 on sale. This video saved me about $1550. Thanks for sharing this great DIY. If you want to save some time heating and freezing, there was a new pulley for sale online including the bearing for $450 + $16 shipping but it did not seem to be MB OEM. Good luck.

Hey man, I just want to say THANK YOU! That was awesome... The best DIY/ cost savings repair out there. I still had my two pins sticking through the washer after the SC bolt removal. I did have to bend the pins slightly to make the washer with the two holes fit back on. I believe these pins help with the brute force of the SC engagement/slippage. But I am not sure... I did have to do the oven freezer trick twice. The first time I did not leave them in long enough but the second time I bumped the temp to 350 for 45 min with the bearing in the freezer and then it still wanted to get stuck not dropping down nearly as far as your did before you applied pressure. Mine needed a good two handed push and then it slammed into place! Additionally, anybody reading this- let it cool down completely because it will get stuck going back on the SC shaft if you dont. My diesel school bus AMG sounds great now :) No more chirp either... And the SC engagement is SO much smoother now. BTW: mine is a 04 S55 Thanks again, Andrew

Great video! I'm a mechanic myself but I enjoy watching videos like this. I don't have a car like yours, but I have a Mercedes 190e. I can relate as far as the heating and freezing of parts. I was putting my pistons back on my connecting rods on my motorcycle. I put the piston on top of my gas stove, put the pin outside in the snow for a half hour. It worked great. I've installed pins in hydraulic rams by putting the pins in the freezer too. Sounds like you saved lots of folks a lot of money too. Good job!

Many thanks for the video. Just changed my bearing on a 2003 sl55. It was a mess. Missing grease shield and 6 bearing. Glad that I caught it. Tried a belt strap wrench but, it would not hold. The "red neck" hose clamps worked just as you showed. I used a torch on nut to soften up loctite but this nut is a tight! Had to convince nut to move with rubber hammer on end of wrench. Finally, it came off. Little scratches in flywheel but, the supercharger is nice and quiet now. I owe you for hose clamp idea.

I just can't help myself. When I was shopping for cars I saw things like hyundais and accords for the same money, and just had to do it. The one thing that can sting is the repair costs, though. If you can't work on it yourself, stay with a toyota or something. This bearing job that cost me $70 would probably be $1500+ if the Mercedes dealership did it.

Excellent clip. Great to see the USA hotrod mentality and knowhow is still alive and well . I have a NA W210 E55 on its way to me over the next week, but will look at a supercharged model in the future. largely as a result of your video. One point of note: At about 3:06 the drive pulley shows damage to grooves, probably done at the same time the hub bolt shoulders were rounded off. While I wouldnt worry about it now, you might want to borrow the wifes nail file to dress the grooves it the car starts chewing out belts. Cheers Steve (NZ)

Great DIY tutorial! I am actually in the market for a E55 AMG just like yours. I decided to do a bit of research on the reliability side of the car and read nothing but horror stories on the MB forums. Ranging from problems that cost a small fortune like the Airmatic suspension failing, or simple, cheap fixes like this. I'd like to hear from an owner and see if you would recommend this car to anyone else.

Good questions. I should specify that by not spinning I mean not being driven by the belt. The SC will freewheel from the engine drawing air into the engine, but at idle, the belt is not driving it, and not forcing air in at greater than atmospheric pressure. The whine at cold startup is the engine oil pump.

I think the chirp is fairly normal, it's just the belt slipping a little when the supercharger engages hard. The magnet is in the big round disk that is on the supercharger shaft behind the pulley.

Mine was on tight and the hose clamps were slipping on the clutch. So what I did was use a piece of bicycle inter-tube. I cut it to the length, then split it open, wrapped it around the clutch, put clamps on and tightened clamps. Work 100% this way you will not scratch the clutch and the clamps have some bite. Also I used a socket 24mm on a breaker bar this gives a straight pull. My pulley had a nylon insert in the grove on the inside of the pulley. One thing to be very careful about is the pulley is shimmed to the clutch to give a certain gap .035-.045mm air gap. Mine had to shim washers on the shaft between the clutch and pulley. The pins on mine were broken as well, according to a Mercedes forum they are needed

duuuude, thank you so much for this video. I just got a SL55 and it was acting up and repaired under dealer warranty. the "harmonic balancer" sheered of and my assumption now is that that this bearing on my engine was spinning but not fast enough to engage the clutch? the supercharger would turn on violently, like from 0% to 100% in an instant. this was throwing an ESP, visit workshop malfunction (short term solution was to turn ignition off than on again and the warning was gone) because the ESP computer was programed to expect a ramping up of the super charger?

I have a Brabus modified SL55 AMG which basically is the same engine, a few weeks ago I had to replace the S/C belt, the S/C belt that Brabus use is a different size (Length) to the AMG factory fitted one, the Brabus S/C belt is made by Gates, BRABUS charge $250 for their "Brabus/Gates belt, but I was able to buy a Gates version which is 2mm only shorter for $20!...plus I changed it myself within 60 seconds, while MB wanted the equivalent of $250 in labour (I live in U.K) Thanks!

It might work without tuning, but I wouldn't recommend it. The car will adapt somewhat, but it won't run to it's full potential. I would also be afraid of an overly lean fuel mixture which could be big trouble.

Robin Thomas Yeah, swapping in a smaller pulley is a pretty quick way to a few extra hp

+Jennies Garage I believe a bigger throttle body helps with a few more horses too 😉 then it's a remap and hey presto!, you have more horses than a wrangler!!

Great vid - next time support the hub rather than the flange when using this tapping method. You got lucky .. Also use single hex tool on the bolt. This will stop rounding and helps with already rounded bolts. (signed an ex MB tech)

Thank you actually! I left MB before this car existed and was called by a friend on Saturday to diagnose this sound on his newly acquired E55. It's me that should be thanking you.
