How easy this is depends on the vehicle. On some Cadillac K bodies for example the alternator is water cooled and stuffed behind the radiator. You need to remove the radiator (which has oil cooler lines, water lines, and transmission lines) to change the alternator and then re-fill and re-assemble. It's a 6 hour job by book labor rate. Not so easy... On other cars it's literally 5 minutes and you're done.
@chrisfix

***** Yep! It all depends! Usually when you can easily see the alternator and it is up top, it is an easy job!

Great video. I just did that same job on my 2004 explorer a couple months ago. About the only difference I found was that after removing the bolts, I discovered they only had to be loosened a few turns to get the alternator out as it just rested on the horizontal bolts and the bolt head against the face was enough to secure it on the bottom with 2 other bolts on top. On another note, if you're buying the alternator from a local parts supplier, have them test the new alternator before bringing it home to install. Turned out the "new" one they had in stock was bad also and they had to order me one from another store.

Will be looking into this as an upgrade for my 2002 ranger as I'm working on adding some aux lighting as well. backup lights and a 50" light bar. Just gotta fab up some mounts or a headache rack to mount it on. I have a fisher homesteader plow mounted as well, so I may look into a dual battery setup as well

ChrisFix yes sir, I sure did. Protect Nightlight is 3 of my favorite videos. For my truck, I'm looking at having to do more of just the headache rack portion as the bed rail caps are part of my bed liner and block the stake pockets. My plan is to get some 1/4" flat stock to slide under my truck box and anchor using the J bolts securing the box and then fabricate the hoop and maybe the upper frame depending on how it looks with a 50" light bar.

This video (all of your videos) was informative and helpful. Thanks. I see You tend to use a flat head screwdeiver on hoseclamps. Why not use a socketwrench) Almost all hoseclamps has a 7 mm bolthead. Its more easy to use, and you avoid the risk of the screwdriver slips and scrach paintwork. There's also dedicatet hoseclamp wrenches/drivers you can buy. They have a 7mm socetMost of them are flexible to get to difficult places.

I had an alternator go out on me on my 2004 Ford F-150 on Labor Day. I picked up an exhaust tail pipe for my scrap run that was along side the roadway. I pulled in my upper driveway to put the tail pipe into my trailer and got back into my truck to move it and all my gauges went blank. The radio went off and to top it off I couldn't shift out of Park. I turned it off and tried to restart it and it wouldn't start so I jump started it and it started but wouldn't shift out of park. I shut it off again and then it wouldn't start. I called my brother and he had a big jump box we got it started again and leaving the jump box attached I could shift it out of park. The engine cut right out as soon as he took the jump box off so end of the story my alternator crapped out on me. I am thankful it happened in my driveway and not out on the roadway to where I would have had to call AAA for a tow. I went to the local junk yard and got one and slapped it in and it solved the problem. Advance Auto wanted $239 for the alternator. I got the one at the junk yard for $25 and it was under guarantee for 30 days

Your Mazda is so much easier to do than mine was. I have an '02 MPV, and the alternator is down below the motor, all the way in the back. Had to removed a damn axle to even make the smallest amount of room to get the old one out and new one in. Took me two freaking days to do it.

All I needed for mine was an 8mm wrench for the battery, 1/4" ratchet for engine cover, 3/8" ratchet for belt tensioner, and I believe it was a 10mm socket to take the alternator out of the engine valley.

Had an alternator fail on me many years ago, kept it going by beating it with a hammer whenever the battery light came on. Rang around. Nissan wanted $600 for a new alternator, auto-electrician wanted $400 for a reconditioned one, brother-in-law laughed at me and said if it was a Mitsubishi I wouldn't have this problem (he was a Mitsubishi salesman). So I pulled the alternator out and discover it's a Mitsubishi alternator (ha!) went to the local parts store, bought a pair of carbon brushes for $4.50 for a Commodore (bog standard common Australian sedan). Opened up the alternator, removed the old carbon brushes - cut the new brushes down to fit with a dremel tool. Soldered new brushes into place. Worked perfectly. Used the same trick on my motorbike a couple of years later - motorbike shop wanted $120 EACH for the carbon brushes, replaced them both for $4.50.

@Redtooth75
@Redtooth75 5 лет назад
Its usually best to follow what the factory did. If it did not have thread locker when you took it off then thread locker is not required. It wouldnt hurt anything to put some on but it is not necessary. Most people put antiseeze on every bolt that did not have thread locker. The bolt wont back out if it is torqued properly.

I found your channel the day I bought it and have had a lot of fun following your videos and replacing parts and fluids over the last month (really enjoyed the super flush). Just wanted to say thanks for putting all of these together. Your level of detail and production quality combo is just right! Thanks a lot!

I'm glad for you and for myself too that we found ChrisFix on RU-vid! He gives big courage to people wanting to fix their own cars but hesitated to. The world is much better place to live with guys like him.
