Acquired an MS 461 a few months ago. The ignition wire connection was open where the "spike" penetrates it. A quick check with a DMM verified that it was open circuit. The wire was shortened a bit, re-terminated. Total cost $0 vs $100 or so for an OEM ignition module. Symptom was no spark or spark as the wire was flexed slightly. Solid after re-terminating.
Good on what you have here, would have like to see your diagnosis for how/why you determined the coil and/or lead was bad. I did not know prior that the high tension wire could be easily removed from the coil.
Not trying to be a note at all but shouldn't you keep a gap tool on hand to make sure the ignition coil and the flywheel are gapped precisely because if not it does make a difference on the whether or not your saw will start after the change of or run properly it can cause it to pre-ignition fire if you got it kept wrong and that pits the top your piston top gets pitted I had way too many of them blows a hole right through the top of them I've done had way too many of them break the same reason and even stihls warranty department confirmed that was reason
