S04E55 In this episode, I drag our old #inflatableboat out of storage to find that the transom had completely rotted away! My intention simply was only to clean it up to make space and sell it, but selling in the condition I had found it would not have been safe for the new owner but the #SIB itself was just in too good of a condition to throw away and so I thought I would have a go at a little DIY transom replacement.
With a transom in the state it was, a simple repair was not possible, although I did start that process - and so, I was faced with the decision - and that was to scrap it or replace the transom.
Having pulled the old transom out, it was clear that it had rotten through and was completely unusable. Sourcing a piece of 'B' Grade, 25mm thick, #marine #plywood (It was going to be painted and so surface marks didn't matter) wasn't too difficult but was expensive at £60. Luckily, I had a supply of #Arc #epoxy from a previous project that didn't get finished and so was technically a freebie, paint was £17 (Half a tin) and the glue amounted to £37 - and with much swearing, the total replacement came to £114 - or about $125.
This is money that will never be recovered as a brand new inflatable similar to this - a Compass 230, would cost around £400 in the UK, however, passing on a good, water-worthy dinghy and giving this SIB a new lease of life was a far better decision!
Oh, and I learnt a lot along the way - namely - PVC glue doesn't like marine paint and that if the parts you aren't bonding are still tacky, they will grab onto another tacky surface instantly with the force of superglue - yes I had to re-apply soooo much glue and try again, but thought it better not to include all of the very bad language in the video.
Is it worth you having a go ?
I can only speak from personal experience, having watched how to do this from other RU-vid VLOGs, of which there are very few, and so, now, here is my attempt!
The Inflatable boat has since been on the water with a 6hp outboard and doesn't leak at all, so I must have done something right!
PS - I did refit the grab plate the correct way up!!!!
As always thank you for watching and we ask if you would kindly consider liking the video and subscribing to our channel - each like and subscription really counts and we have a lot of fun producing this content for you.

That adhesive to glue it back in looks remarkably like some adhesive we use on the aircraft interiors, only it`s called PSA, and yes, you`re not alone at swearing at it when you use it 😂😂😂. Nice job Gav, we`ve often debated at the syndicate AGM whether or not to buy a tender for Lightning. It would be a nice addition, but also an incovenience when mooring, so we dropped the idea.

They make a good fender for when the neighbours look like their boat handling is a bit iffy too!

Oh the swearing was out of this world - thankfully much of it was filmed at my son's old place and he has moved now!

thanks for the video. im about to do the same but had a quick question when you experienced that problem with paint peeling after you put on the glue... if i used totalboat white color totalprotect epoxy barrier coat instead of having to epoxy then paint over it. would it not peel?? since the epoxy has paint mixed in, you should't experience the glue problem you had imo. what do you think?

I think you are right - what I did do was to ensure that the paint that I used was compatible with epoxy, but completely ignored the adhesive. I knew that the adhesive was safe on the epoxy but hadn't considered the glue would react with the paint I had used, which meant sanding it back to the epoxy coat eventually. The second mistake I made was to attempt to bond the whole transom in one go - I would advise just bonding the lower edge first and then being patient enough to do the two sides in turn - it was a wrestling match as once multiple coats are applied, and the tacky layer is added, it really is like superglue! Good luck in your refurb! As a side note, I sold this to a friend some time ago and they have it in regular use! Thank you for your comment, I will be having another go and have a look out for that product and try it.

@@lovelifeloveboat thanks for your response! would it be a bad idea to use a regular ole plywood from homedepot than sourcing for a marine plywood?

I personally wouldn't although, theoretically, if the seam is well epoxied then it should stay waterproof - there are different grades of ply and waterproofing levels, but, sadly, regardless of how well they get sealed water will get in as the transom flexes when there is an outboard on the back, and once it gets into the wood, it will continue to syphon water in , delaminate and rot quickly - that was the problem I had with the dinghy originally as I am sure the original wood was not marine ply and for a relatively young inflatable, that wood was completely knackered. The ply I used was second grade marine ply as it had a knot pattern in it, which I bought directly from an importer here. It was also an off-cut so I didn't pay too much but a decent piece will easily cost around £70 ($80) in the current market place (Wood is the new Gold I think!) - I was lucky, it cost me alot less but I promised I wouldn't say how much! please do film your refurb and upload it. I think if I have another go I will do quite alot differently as I definitely learned alot from having a go!

@@lovelifeloveboat yessir! ill try to post my progress as my first video on here. since i cant seem to source 1 inch thick marine grade plywood here in california for less than 100 dollars, i will be using some sort of exterior plywood then epoxy cover everything like you did in the video to keep my wood costs around $70. im hoping to be able to find a marine grade soon before i start on it.

I think as long as the epoxy really gets into that grain then a good waterproof ply may suffice for occasional use. I look forward to following your progress.

How long should a transom treated in this way last?
@lovelifeloveboat
@lovelifeloveboat 7 месяцев назад
They should last many years, normally ply transoms fail because there is a gap in the glued surface and water sits, slowly edging the ply laminates apart. I have had a ply boat previously that lived in the water, so as long as it is water tight and the epoxy good, I guess a very very long time...
