I have a 2017 3.2ltr Jeep Cherokee Longitude here in Australia. I've played with cars most my life. This includes engine & running gear swaps, so I do have some experience when playing with cars, so I'm not scared to have a go. We've had the battery changed once under warranty in 2020, But I've had too jump the Jeep twice in the last 2 weeks. This tells me the battery needs replacing again. Sad these days batteries don't last that long. Back in the day, a well maintained battery would get you around 5-6 years plus. Since I haven't changed the battery myself in the Jeep yet, I'd thought I'd find out how it's done anyway. And after watching your very well done video, it's no diff to how I wouldn't done it anyway. I see you've got other videos on maintenance on the Jeep Cherokee. These may come in handy, as ours has just run out of warranty. I've just subscribed and bookmarked your channel for future reference.
These days, once you had to jumpstart your vehicle, I'd start making arraignment to replace it asap or you will be left stranded. Batteries these days have plates half the thickness they use to and vehicles have more than double the electrical demand they use to... from power windows to auto hatch back openers and so on... if your battery lasts 3 years you are considered very lucky LOL. Thanks for the sub. I will keep uploading any new repairs that may come up in the future.
Those Duralast Gold batteries are great!! My 2018 SuperStart battery from Walmart failed this winter. I had a 2017 DLG battery from my truck sitting on the workbench for a couple years since my truck died. Converted the side post to a top post with an adapter, and hooked it up and the car fired right up in below freezing weather!
Very thorough video on the procedure to remove and replace the battery John! Great that the programmed presets retained their memory during the replacement! Have a great weekend! 👍
An excellent video about replacing the battery on this 2017 Jeep Cherokee, including tips on doing this safely. I enjoyed viewing until the end and gave you a well deserved thumbs up. Thank you for sharing my friend.
Thanks for posting this video. We had our 2017 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk at the dealer for new tires today and were told we need a new battery. I think they wanted $350 installed. However, I'm going to pick it up myself for $239 and install it myself. I understand that after market electronic parts are terrible. So I'm going with the dealer battery.
Yeah I've been lucky only had to replace a battery a couple times in my life, but it's good knowing how to do it or getting stuck and needing to get your vehicle to the garage can be costly, great tutorial...
Hi John! Got cold and noticed my battery on my 2014 Trailhawk is reading 13.9 v first thing in the morning. Normally reads 14.2. Had the battery tested and was reading fully charged. I'm not sure how old the battery is but since I've owned this vehicle 8 months I'm going to just buy a new battery. Thanks for your video.
Hey Monty, The auto part store you got the battery tested can tell you the age of the battery. But if not sure, I would change it, I agree with you. These new cars are very sensitive when the battery is not at full capacity, especially the computer. Thanks for the feedback and hope you have a Great Thanksgiving.
🤔Battery cover ... I don't have that on my Battery 🧐,,,,really handy ,,makes sense,,, a Battery over 👍🏼should be on any vehicle,, something to thinking about it. must look into that 🙂 thanks for sharing ,,have a great day too. 🐺🐾
Good Morning! Thank you for another excellent tutorial video! A very beautiful combination of video and information! Big thumb up, my friend! Receive my very best regards for a Happy Easter!
John excellent explanation demonstration . Replies contact be good to hear from you and where to see you're doing well. Happy new years God-bless bye for now your Friend Ken.
A good battery should last at least 3 years but then it depends on your car and habits. The electronics in vehicles today re demanding more and more every year. On the larger Gran Cherokee for example they come with an auxiliary battery under the passenger seat to take care of the extra electronic demand. Seems like a good idea to me.
John thank your for the video. I have a 2020 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk that is showing signs of needing a new battery. I know that this is an older Cherokee, but did you not have any concerns about using some type of memory saver to save all of the computer's memory, along with settings such as seats, radio, etc.? Was there any "relearning" needed by your vehicle after the battery swap?
It was surprising to me as well that it dint have to relearn anything I had set up. I usually use a OBD II Vehicle ECU Emergency Power Supply Cable Memory Saver with Alligator Clip-On 12V Car Battery Cigarette Lighter Power Extension Socket: amzn.to/3JA5Ghj I gave it to my son so I had to do without it this time.
Only came here to see what size the nuts are. Not that I'm special and deserve it, but if you're going to be as thorough as you are: mention what damn size the nuts are. Would be especially beneficial to rookies.
Thanks for the feedback but If you would have read the first row in the description you would have seen the following note: "10mm socket for terminals and 15mm socket for fastener." Mia Colpa!, I did forget to mention it, the rookies would have appreciated without looking for it in the description.. Thanks again for the great comment.
@JohnCRV fair enough. I just tend not to bother reading descriptions when they're full of emoji puke and links. To boot, the jeep I threw a battery in was a 10mm for the battery retainer.

Great tutorial video, I did not understand your language, but I watched what you did.

Can you show where the second battery is and how to replace it? Thank you! Also, do you have any advice about why the batteries on my Jeep Cherokee sport need replacing every two years. Jeep says it is normal, but I don't trust the dealer lol
The Second Battery is not on the Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk 2017. As far as I knw only the GRAND Cherokees have them. Here's a video you can watch to show where it is ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jFQXs6GTmBo.html The replacement of every 2 years on batteries is becoming a fact unfortunately. As to why? They are screwing us bottom line. The led inside the batteries are made much thinner and therefore less lifetime. Good luck...
My battery was replaced at autozone and now my engine light, parking light and traction light are on and it says "service park brake" and "service transmission restart with vehicle at zero speed", does my car need to be reset or? I don't know what happened.
Battery spray Protector: amzn.to/2QqZbn6 Seals and coats battery terminals eliminating the formation of acid salt corrosion typically found when terminals are untreated. Prevents terminal corrosion and battery drain. Increases battery life and improves electrical flow Spray on batteries, battery terminals, and cables, in or out of storage Suggested Applications: Automotive, marine, farm machinery, and motorcycle batteries.
Now I know how to change my battery. My Jeep wont start today....Going to try and jumpstart and then take it somewhere to test it. First time this happened to me EVER so Im stressing out. Could it be frozen?
I did that on my 18 Cherokee trailhawk and next to the battery on the left there were a bundle of wires...do you know what they are for? Almost looked like something to hook a trailer up with not that but a similar look any thoughts?
My 2017 Cherokee Trailhawk only has one battery. That battery powers everything. The Cherokee is not a Grand Cherokee in which has the second battery. That's what I found out in my research a few years ago...
Hello ! I have a jeep as well 2019 model since my battery has been changed out ! My start stop does not work and the display says battery protection on and it wont clear !! How do i do this anyone know ? Help please
FYI; The start stop in attached to the negative battery cable (it looks like a small Box. 1st, Make sure you replaced the battery with the same type. You could disconnect it and reconnected by following the instruction in the video description. If none of that works, you need a mechanic.
as far as I know from some research I did a few years ago; the 2017 Cherokee trail hawk I own does not have one. In the Cherokee lineup only the Jeep Grand Cherokees are equipped with 2 batteries. It’s located under passenger seat.
So, my local dealership claimed if I changed the battery myself it may "lose its memory" and be unable to shift after putting the new battery in. Anyone heard of this?
