Replace a broken Nikon / Nikkor AF-S 18-105 mm VR bayonet mount.
You can use similar procedure for the following lenses:
- Nikon AF-S DX 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G Version I, II, and VR
- Nikon AF-S DX 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR
- Nikon AF-S DX 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED
- Nikon AF-S DX 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF ED VR
Attempt at your own risk, if you don't feel comfortable doing it please take the lens to a camera repair shop.

I so appreciate the simplicity of this video. No unnecessary graphics, no introduction that takes up 5 minute to actually start showing what the title said it would, no sharing of any personal stories that were uncalled for, no stalling of any kind. It showed exactly what I needed and nothing more. Now my camera works! THANK YOU.

Great video. Thank you! Couple of points (having actually performed this fix on precisely this lens following this video). That tiny pin that is attached by a wire to the inner right of the lens (as unscrewed at 4:00) is a four-piece spring-loaded pin. If you pull gently on the ring, the wire can separate from the spring loaded pin. If this happens, it is only a matter of tiny knocks before the tiny black plastic insulator ring is fired across the room. Work in a clean space to avoid losing parts. If you do separate the wire from the spring loaded mount, you will need to solder the wire back on to the spring-loaded pin. Because the "open" spring makes it impossible to do this, thread a piece of cotton through the middle of the spring and tie it tight. Put the pieces back together, solder it up and then cut the cotton. The iFixit Essential ElectronicsTool Kit was extremely useful in replacing the broken mount ring.

What did you solder the wire back to? the tip of the pin? It's very hard to see in the videos

Btw, I have reassembled the pin to the ring which seems to eliminate the spring problem.

This is a great video - needs no words, super clear and works!! Recommend magnetised screwdrivers and attach spring before remounting ring so that the spring is only under tension when attached at both ends and so less likely to ping off!

Be very careful of that wire. Mine broke too but was able to strip some of the wire and use the compression ring to replace it. Works again! I will never pack my wife's camera in checked bags again!!!!! :)

Very useful. I had a problem in that on my lens, as I tried to remove the aperture stop down rod/ring (as you do at 3:50 on the video) I could't take it out; it was still retained deeper in the lens, so I had to remove the two screws that attached the rod to the ring. The screws had thread-lock applied, so I had to reapply it to make sure they stayed and didn't become loose. Fiddly to reassemble, but all good in the end. Thanks for that.

Thank you, now have my favorite camera back! For those of us with bad eyes, a magnifier is a must. The screw for the spring loaded clip was the hardest for me. I ended up breaking the little wire too and had to solder it back on. Also, all kinds of shims will fall out if you turn it upside down to get dropped screws out! They have to go back in a certain way. One thing that made it easier for me was to turn the lens so that the glass portion drops a bit. Didn't have any issues with that tricky part with all the contacts. Took me about two hours I guess, but mostly because of just having bad eyes. It was a great learning experience, would do it again! Made sure to clean the inner lens followed with a good blast of compressed air to get any bits of the old ring out.

Great video. Watched it through and then followed it when doing the repair. My comments echo an earlier poster. Should use a Phillips head screwdriver. The wire is attached to the pin with the black ring. If it becomes separated, remove the ring, put the end of the wire in the ring and feed it back onto the pin. Reassembly of the two inner pieces is easier if done together. Thank you for your post

Thanks for the video, showed what i needed. Incredibly good pointer Toby Haynes, work in a clean space. I dropped the screw that holds the brass bracket on with the spring loaded wire / ball point / contact point thingy and thought the screw fell further into the lens. I got way more intimate with the lens than I wanted to but saved me money on a new lens!

actually its supposed to be like that. if you e.g. drop your camera with a steel bayonet that doesn't break the shock would transfer to somewhere inside the camera and do even bigger damage

When you slip and smash your lens on the floor/wall/person next to you, do you want it to a) snap at the mount point making it impossible to use the lens or b) damage the f-mount so that you can't get any lens to sit tightly on your camera body. The Nikon engineers have chosen (a).

I’d suggest using a magnetic head on an telescoping rod, as used by mechanics. They make small ones that fit in a shirt pocket, with very strong magnets. Much easier than tweezers for removing tiny screws.

I have a question: I followed all the steps on the video, and it was easy, but now all the pictures that I take are very dark. No matter if I set the ISO all the way up. It's like the lens is not allowing the light go through it as efficiently as before. I had to change the bayonet because I dropped my camera... could it be that there are other components inside the camera that are misplaced as well because of the fall? Does anyone else is experiencing this same issue?
@alicokkonusur
@alicokkonusur 4 года назад
Dear David, I had the same issue after replacement of the bayonet, then I did the same steps again and see that I put the 2-3 plastic thing (ıdk the name) at 4:39 on the right hole, it should be put on the left hole, otherwise blades of the lens do not open and that is why the viewfinder shows dark and take pictures very very dark and also do not focus.

I would strongly advise anyone attempting this sort of repair to invest in a set of JIS screwdrivers (Japanese Industrial Standard). Ordinary crosshead drivers are not a very good fit and you can start to damage the screw heads, making them impossible to deal with a second time. JIS match the screws the Japanese use, and make the job easy(er).
