These step-by-step instructions detail a brake job on a 2004 GMC Sierra 1500, and will be similar to replacement procedures on your 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007, Chevy Silverado 1500. The replacement procedures will be similar for select Cadillac Escalade models from 2002. Replacing worn brake pads and rotors helps you maintain a safe, working braking system, and can help you avoid an accident. If you hear squealing or grinding noises when braking, or notice pulsing or shaking when you apply the brakes, it is important to replace both the brake pads and rotors as soon as possible for a complete brake repair.

Your GMC Sierra’s brake pads and rotors are integral parts of the braking system that help slow your truck down when you apply the brakes. The brake pads clamp onto your Sierra’s brake rotors to slow the spinning wheels, and help to stop your truck smoothly. Replacing worn brake pads and rotors on your 2004 GMC Sierra is a straightforward repair that can help ensure you are able to drive safely. If you need to replace your truck’s brake pads or rotors, you may hear squealing or grinding sounds when braking, or you may experience pulsing or vibrations in the brake pedal. It’s recommended that both the brake pads and rotors on your 1999 to 2007 GMC Sierra be replaced at the same time, since the brake pads and rotors have been used for the same amount of time and they are likely to wear out at the same interval. Failing or malfunctioning brake pads or brake rotors can cause problems with braking distance and handling your GMC Sierra, and could put you and others in danger. Our detailed step-by-step instructions will help you perform a brake rotor and brake pad replacement on your GMC Sierra.

Park on a level surface.
Carefully remove the plastic caps on your lug nuts with a 21mm socket, if your truck has them.
Then loosen the lug nuts on the front wheels with your 22mm socket.
Jack up the front end and put it on stands. Remove the lug nuts and wheel.
Remove the two caliper bolts with a T55 socket and breaker bar. Slide out the two caliper slide bolts.
Take the caliper off the rotor… and use your caliper hanger to secure it out of the way without putting any pressure on the brake line.
Now, you should be able to remove the old brake pads. Remove the two caliper mounting bracket bolts with a 18mm socket.
Take the mounting bracket off and set it aside.
Spray penetrating oil where the rotor slides onto the bolts if it’s difficult to remove.
Remove the rotor from the hub.

Do NOT tighten the caliper mounting bolts to 90lbs. Just snapped the bolts doing that!

The front T55 bolt tighten to 90lbs but the rear 13mm ones only tighten to 27-30 lbs

Overall, a good presentation up until the 2:20 mark when I saw that the rotors, while similar in appearance to my '06 are different in one IMPORTANT respect; they don't have the two holes drilled that the torx bolts use to affix the rotor to the wheel hub. Good for most folks, I guess, but useless to me. Oh well, the search goes on....
