Mine is too. I did not know about this but I did get my cowl replaced 2 years ago, wondering if they changed the filter and left all the debris there.

Same and I doubt mines been changed ever 🤣 guess I'll do that at the next oil change which is 150000

*Yes, they leak. Those plastic tabs break off that holds and seals the rubber and sometimes you need to silicone the plastic and save a few bucks and be MacGyver*

Wait never mind, just read that some models don't have cabin air filters just mesh to prevent debris from entering the HVAC system

There is no cabin air filter from the factory. There’s a spot for one of you wish to add one which I did but if you bought a 00-04 focus new it didn’t have the cabin air filter installed, you had to add your own. Just put it in and it fits perfect I just did it last night.. 2005-2007 models didn’t have a cabin filter, they just had a piece of wire mesh like the lint trap on a clothes drier and you couldn’t put an cabin filter in, you just cleaned the top of it off with a vacuum. Btw there’s a black plastic grate sitting over the cabin filter box, in the front, pull the big straight plastic piece on the front of the grate and towards you and pull it out, it doesn’t fit back on when you have the cabin air filter inside the box. Clean it and put it somewhere you will remember just in case the next owner doesn’t want a cabin air filter. Then wash the outside cowl piece with some cleaner and also clean the lower part of the windshield where the cowl sits. Install the cowl like normal then Use gorilla double sided mounting tape and stick it on the windshield so the top end of the cowl gets stuck onto the tape. This is so it creates a tight seal so leaves and stuff don’t creep down form the windshield into your new cabin filter.
