Without removing the spark plug, there is enough compression in the cylinder to counter the torque of an impact wrench as I've been using that method on a 4018 poulan. You just need to purchase the clutch tool for the model, reducing the chance of rope getting stuck in the exhaust port of the cylinder, or other issues from using hammer & screw driver, where the clutch is very tight.
@KReesethebeast
@KReesethebeast 3 года назад
The reason I did it this way, is because the majority of folks do not have the specific clutch removal tool. I wanted all the fellas to be able to get their saw straight for cheap. I agree, the tool is the best way though.

You took it off with the letters facing outwards. Then you flipped it around and put the letters inward toward the engine with the new one. Which is it?

I believe its bi directional, either side is fine. I have not had any issues at all with it since.

Can you help. Hustvarna Rancher 50 from 1985. The shaft on which the clutch screws has a hexagon nut on outer end and projects only 1/8th inch and there is copper colour around it where it meets the shaft. This saw has never been to a service dealer etc and I own from new.. How to get the clutch unscrewed is the problem the 'nut' is solid fixed. Do I hold the clutch with rope in cylinder etc and hammer it off as shown in other videos or have you seen anything like it??? any ideas?

Without seeing it that is hard to say, just be careful and take your time.

Actually the nut referred to is used to unscrew the unit. NO hammering. Job done. Thanks @@KReesethebeast

Just experienced a sudden onset of my chain self tightening. Cut a few logs, went to refuel and adjust the chain. Got back to the log and just 2 seconds after firing the saw it bogged and stalled. The chain was so tight, I couldnt move it freely nor was there any slack whatsoever. I readjusted and same thing. This happened 4 times in a row. Wonder if it's the sprocket? The fourth time, the chain was adjusted properly then as I was taking it off the bench I bumped the handle and could literally watch the chain fall to slack. I bet the chain is riding up on the high spots of a worn sprocket. Any suggestions? Hopefully I have it figured out.

I would replace the drive sprocket, chain, and bar. If you do one it is best to all three. I ended up doing that and my issue was fixed.

@@KReesethebeast That was my problem. Took it back to the house and sure enough the sprocket looked just like the one in your video. I have another saw that was given to me that had a "skipping" chain so it just sat on the shelf...took both saws apart, after watching your vid, and there they were.. worn out sprockets. One rim and one spur. The spur sprocket "ears" looked like the letter V...no wonder the chain was skipping. Now I have two perfectly running saws. Thanks again brother!!

Can you change the drive sprocket to a different size so go from .325 to 3/8 .I know would need new chain and bar aswell doing that ?
@KReesethebeast

I honestly would talk to a small engine shop or someone who has done that, I have always kept my saws to factory specs.

Its easier to use a adjustable spanner wrench for an angle grinder instead of banging screwdriver with hammer. (Something i just learned 15mins ago). Also i had to remove spark plug to bind the piston with a rag and a screwdriver jammed inside.

Does it really? That is pretty cool. Yes got to watch wear there also. Turns out I needed a new chain as well, one of my drive links was jacked up pretty bad and that was causing this issue as well. So if in doubt, replace drive sprocket, bar, and chain and you should be good to go for a long time!

Question: I was running a Stihl ms261 and I realized the rim sprocket was broken. A section was missing but there was no deformation, how could this have happened? How can it be prevented?
@KReesethebeast

Wear and tear, could have hit something that torqued the chain real hard and that was the weak link in the system.

Not all models have that grease maintenance hole. Most pro/production models do. Sawyers love it. It's amazing how that little bearing doesn't get the love it needs. Bearings are cheap the crank isn't. I have a Stihl with crank journal wearout due to customer not maintaining the clutch bearing.

@@KReesethebeast in some saws if you squirt grease with grease gun like the ones for the bars you can grease teh needle bearing that way... thats what the little hole at the tip of the threads on the shaft is for

@magicone9327

I am up against that project currently. Aftermarket parts fit the saw(sort of loose) but the rim sprockets on aftermarket do not interchange with OEM as they are larger bore. Same with Stihl. I take clutches off so many times I considered getting the removal tool, I took one look at it and got my thin cut-off grinder, a 13/16 1/2 drive socket and made one. It works so good. I had done the impact with driver like you did many times but kept having troubles with holding down the saw when impacting. Saws I work on are usually being repaired/rebuilt and have very low compression so the impact seems to roll over the crank.

@gittyupalice96 3 года назад
@@magicone9327 Not sure what you mean, the factory sprockets for my Huskys are identical to the Oregon "after market" ones. Fit is the exact same, in my case for the 50cc saws is a small-7 spline. Or sometimes stamped on the side is "S7"

they need to match... both .325 or both 3/8... any gauge should be fine .050 .063 etc ...the gauge of the bar on the other hand does need to match your chain

@magicone9327
@magicone9327 4 года назад
Kareem Brooks faster? More power or more top end or more over all speed? More speed with power u have use larger drive sprocket. U probably already know that but someone might not. Mods to the porting/timing are tricky if you can't get to the areas of required to due to head connect to case design., just not enough clearance unless u have a dental style drill. Quality/octane of fuel is another thing that isn't hard to do. Even using high quality racing lubricants add to engine performance

@@danielreid9908 Glad yo got it figured out! When it is time to replace one thing, best to go ahead and do sprocket bar and chain. It will keep everything running and cutting like new.
@danielreid9908
@danielreid9908 4 года назад
@@KReesethebeast I hope it isnt cutting like new, because Im gradually learning how to sharpen the chain to cut extremely fast, and a new one just cuts acceptable. Maybe Ill start learning how to make minor educational clips related to my own experience.
@KReesethebeast

@@danielreid9908 Good rule of thumb is to touch up the chain every tank of fuel. Also, if it stops throwing chunks of wood and starts showing nothing but powder, it is time to sharpen.
