This is a valuable addition to my woodwork collection ru-vid.comUgkxkNYRBJuiJ6EwD-tQSAlxg0eFKsnR2cgz I still will rate this woodwork plan as the best in my reference library. It always seem to stand out from the rest whenever you go through the library. This is a masterpiece.

Thanks! I have to replace the corner post of my house and thought a car jack would work to hold a temp post in place while the main post is put into position. Now, I know that will work after looking at your video. Great Job!!!

Do you anchor those bottom plates to the concrete? Maybe I missed that part?

House looks great! I'm in the middle of this right now- just ripped down the old porch ceiling and will be replacing one rotted post. Planning on boxing them out to about 7" square.

Great instructional video. I’ve got just 1 post to replace, for the same reason. It’s become rotten at the bottom . I probably should put up 2 new post and go larger like yours . My front porch only has 2 beams needed to hold the overhang of the house over the concrete porch. I’m not by far a extremely skilled carpenter as your self, I know just enough to get some Jobs like this done, and a few other thing’s. I’m learning little at a time though through Small DIY Stuff & videos such as yours are very helpful! I bought the exact same Jack u were using , not only to keep in trunk of my Car, but also for jacking up the porch when I got around to replacing my bad Post.

Columns look great Shawn! Why wouldn't you want to cut them on the table saw? Thanks!

Thanks!! The columns would have been too heavy and cumbersome for a safe cut on the table saw.

Looks great! I was wondering how you were going to do those half post and I'm not jealous because that treated SYP is tough stuff haha. Btw, best way I've found to cut 6x6 down to length is just a cut around all 4 sides with a circular saw and handsaw the rest if it needs it.

Do you have any more info on the post base, the web site is pretty generic. I've been searching for some like those but haven't had any luck. Thanks in advance, and your post looks great!

That was great. I'm looking to do the exact same thing but have been torn whether to do 4x4 and then wrap in pine/ cedar ABC's stain... or use a treated 6x6 and stain. Your 6x6s looked pretty fresh, no issues with the stain soaking in?

Are the columns held in place just by the weight of the structure above it? Are anchors needed?

Thanks for this. Getting ready to replace rotten 6×6's for first time. Concrete surrounds the posts im replacing and posts were on dirt. Would it be best to fill in with concrete before installing? Just doing a little research for best way to do it.

Hey, thanks for the video. I have a back porch with 13 columns that need to be replaced and I've been looking for those post bases. Do you know how i could get my hands on that type base? I have looked at all local stores and internet and have come up empty handed.

I was told wood cannot touch concrete because it can dry rot. You need a footer underneath.

What kind of lumber?
@greatitbroke
@greatitbroke 6 лет назад
Man I would have thrown that 6 X 6 through the rip blade on the band saw. It was most likely spruce or fir. Its not too common to see pine in PT lumber. Nice job though they look great. Love the stain.

Instead of cutting the 6x6 in half, I think I'd use a 2 x 6 or 4 x 6 and call it good.
