You don't necessarily need it, but it makes the repair much easier by loosening the adhesive. You can also use a hair dryer on heat setting.

It's possible it could cause damage if you're not careful. I chose a weaker type of tape that doesn't leave residue. Also, make sure you're careful when pulling it off if it's a camera module that has a stabilizer, like the one in the video.
