Very good video Peter. I was actually able to replace the key lock in my corolla with removing the door latch actuator. You can just unscrew the two bolts that hold the door handle together and bam just gently remove the clip around the lock cylinder and swap the old one out with the new one. Saves a bunch of time.
Hi Mad Scientist or any one else can you or are you able to demonstrate your technique please this is abit daunting to follow only because I am thinking removing all those parts is it absolutely necessary and now youve mentioned just removing two bolts I would seriously try that instead. I have an urgent dilemma my daughters work car is a toyota windom 97 she lost her key because it had no hook on it to put on keyring and she also has no spare and the only cheap option is for her to take door lock cylinder to locksmith. Any other advice would be massive appreciation...Big ups to Peter finn though
So all I needed was to remove the door lock from my 1996 Corolla. I followed his instructions all the way to pulling the black crossbar off. Then I took a different route. Instead of taking that metal octopus out, I went directly to removing the yellow plastic clip off the actuator bar ( “metal pipe” ) attached to the lock. After getting a good look at your target yellow clip on the actuator bar on the lock, reach in and wrangle (gently, or not) it off. If you are replacing the lock, it won’t matter if you break it, the new replacement part has one on it but the clip requires only a gentle nudge to get it to pop up. I don’t recommend prying at it with a screwdriver if you want it to remain intact. Then remove the LEFT hand bolt that secures the exterior door handle. This bolt secures the lock to the door handle. Leave the RIGHT bolt in place. The lock will now practically fall out. Installing the new lock takes a little fine wrangling to seat it, but it will go in eventually 😬. Be sure the actuator bar is on the correct side of everything first, just to make it a bit easier. Mine just fell back and was in position anyway. Now comes the hard part: getting that darned bolt thru the hole in the arm on the lock and into its seat, holding it in place while maneuvering your socket, and driving it. I have small lady hands. Good luck to those of you who do not. Getting the actuator bar into its proper seat on the lock and seating the yellow clip was also no picnic. I was hoping to repair the lock but one of the pins was broken in half so chose to replace it. It is 2020 and I found OEM lock for $70+ shipping so opted for after market pair for both doors on Amazon for $35. It fit and works. For how long, we shall see.
The round pin lock on the window handle is better trick to insert cloth behind and pull and rock it back and forth until pin ends catch the cloth and pops out. Much easier than the half dozen screw drivers.
Use a shop rag to remove the window crank clips. Just slide the edge of the towel between the panel and the handle and seesaw back and forth, and clip will pop right out!
how can i open the electric door lock on the rear doors and why doesn't it move the unlock knob very well at all? so the electric lock basically doesn't open nor close the door when needed... (it's a Kiekert lock inside a plastic case)
Mr. Peter, I appreciate your work and I follow your videos even I have no problems but I see here that you damaged the door panel with your screw driver instead using proper tool and this is poor art in mechanic job, I hope you use tools made for it's own purposes, have fun.
