How to replace DS Shell in UNDER 10 minutes - Shell Swap
In this episode of my how to series i show you how you can replace a Nintendo DS Shell with a new replacement shell! That way you can remove any scratches / broken / smashed original DS shell with a brand new one or even replace your DS Shell with a customised one to really make it your very own. This will also cover how to do a DS hinge repair in all under 10 minutes!

This is the best channel BY FAR when it comes to repair tutorials. No waffling, straight to the point and informative! This video was my guide replacing my DS shell as I have never done it before. The shell was of poor quality. It came with screws that didn't even fit, so I had to use my own. This video helped a lot! Thank you!

This video is super helpful! My experience swapping the hinges was awful until I used the corner of my desk. Press down on the housing and use the corner of the desk to force those pins into the hinge slots. The use of profanity is also helpful.

Thanks, I needed to replace the hinge on my ds because it broke, so I ordered one with the break on the opposite side, I may secure that one to work if I can using leather and duct tape like mine currently uses.

Hi! While I was trying to fit the ribon through the hinge part, the ribbon was cut off, if I buy a new one will it work? people on discord tell me I need a new top lcd screen but both connectors of top screen and the one on motherboard are fine!

Are the buttons more receded on the new shell? I have an original with a broken hinge that I just bought a new shell that I’m going to replace it with but if the buttons don’t stick out of the bottom like the original I will just use the original bottom with the new top please let me know

I've noticed on some shells its actually the hole for the buttons is just not big enough and needs adjusting slightly, a file normally works well for this

Still have my original model ds. It's rather scratched up and paint wearing off but mostly fine shell wise other then the loop part of the hinge on the right side which broke and the L button no longer works. Also have my brothers witch is in better shape but the same part is broken

Anyone have anytips on how to clean the inside of the game slot, including the connectors for this ds. Recently found mine again after moving out, some of the older games wont work but the newer ones do.. either way it would be nice to deep clean it, any tips or video recommendations??

Great tutorial, unfortunately the shells seem to have dropped in quality. Most of the ones I've checked out don't even have the screw holes threaded so the speakers are almost impossible to keep in

Thanks a lot for this video! I just did a huge restauration on my old DS, which had a broken hinge as well as two broken shoulder buttons. Decided to replace the entire shell and also attempt replacing the shoulder buttons. It was a tough project as I'm basically a total noob in this area and had to learn many things. Even learned how to solder and desolder stuff, just for the shoulder buttons. Of course things went wrong here and there and I came across a few roadblocks that I thought I couldn't overcome, but I eventually managed to do everything I had planned, and this video definitely helped me with taking the DS apart and putting it back together. It was kinda tricky to even find any resources on the original DS, so this video was very appreciated!

Thanks, I'm also relieved! 😊 There were honestly multiple points where I thought to myself "this can't possibly work out". I'm especially surprised the shoulder button replacement worked, conisdering it was my first time soldering. Most of the issues probably came down to the replacement shell itself, though. Not sure if I just happened to buy a particularly bad one, but it was full of mistakes I had to work around, the holes for the hinges were incredibly tight and badly aligned (inserting those was probably the hardest part), the included screws were completely arbitrary and didn't even fit into some of the holes. Originally, I had hoped to do the entire replacement in just one or two evenings, but it ultimately ended up taking me almost an entire week. 😅

@@oddgbmo3036 Thanks! Well, since I'm only a beginner myself and have really only soldered this one time, I don't want to give too many tips. There's definitely people with more experience than me who can give more valueable tips. Though what I can say is that for me, the biggest hurdle to overcome was simply being too scared. All that time, I was just too scared to break my DS, so I always touched it too shortly or too loosely or I didn't set the temperature high enough. While I suppose it IS possible to damage a circuit that way, I find being too scared is an equally large problem, because the contacts will just never melt that way and you'll find yourself struggling forever. Once I stopped being so scared, it got a lot easier.

Hey i know I'm late but you should probably search for a authentic ds that doesn't turn on or has very bad screens with a good cosmetic shape and little scratches to it. You'd get what you need without the cheap aftermarket and maybe even a few parts. That is if you haven't already found a solution by now.

I just finished going through this and now when I press the power button, it powers on for a moment, the screen flashes, then shuts off. I've gone back and reseated the ribbon connectors. Is there something else i should check? The battery is charged. And I've repeated this with both a charger plugged in and unplugged.

My DS needs repairing. I dropped it back in 2015, causing it to break the hinge and the top screen to not work properly. I don't think it's busted because when you hold the screen in a precise angle, the image comes up so it must have a loose wire. My stepdad bought it back when it was brand new in 2005 and it pains me that I broke it so it's up to me to fix it.

Word of advice: ALWAYS use the screws that come with the replacement shell. The 1st screws I screwed on mine were the ones that hold the PCBs next to the top screen in place, and I used the screws of the original case. Now my top lid has 2 little bumps next to the screen , on each side. 🤦‍♂️

I've had mixed results with using both, sometimes the new ones ruin the new shell, sometimes the original ones do. In summary, for whatever reason, DS shell replacements are poor quality

I got everything replaced and put the whole thing back together. However, when I press the power button, the green light comes on for a sec then goes off. I don't think it's the battery but maybe It has something to do with the wiring?

@@peachyalo mine was unbranded, they work okay. They are not the best due to some of the "paint jobs" and the screws they provide are quite crummy, however you can reuse the original screws instead

okay, so i followed everything you said and finally finished reshelling my DS. However, now my DS isn't working. any idea why? It's charging when I plug in the charger, battery has always been good. i can hear the speakers glitch a bit every time i press the power button. but it doesnt boot up. if you or anyone has an idea why this is, i hope you can help me.

The same thing happened to me. My Ds was working, but now, it doesn't work. The lower screen flashes and the LED turns green, but then the Ds turns off and does not boot. Extremely frustrating

@@Pararadibumthe same thing happened to me I was so disappointed cuz I took me hours to do all for it to turn on for a split second then turn off. It almost like a quick flash then turns off, like the white screen is there for a split second then it goes black again

@@missingkitty8354I managed to solve the problem with my Ds. In my case, the problem was with the upper screen flex cable. I made the change and the Ds worked again. There's no need to get desperate, it's probably the same problem, just replace the upper screen flex cable.

If the bottom screen flashes and your ds/dsl turns off then the problem is usually the other (top) screen. Check and reseat the cables. You may have damaged the upper screen cable. Easy to do which sucks. Replacement upper screen cables are available on aliexpress and ebay. Good luck.

Those screws aren't tri-wing. They're Y-Type. Tri-wing is a completely different standard.

These hinges are maybe the most ridiculous thing I've ever encountered. There's no way they pushed them in by hand during manufacturing. I have an aftermarket shell and the hinges slide very easily into the top screen holes, but barely at all into the bottom screen's. I've managed to shove them in enough the pieces seem mostly held together, but the clicking is a little off and it doesn't have that satisfying click its supposed to have when you open it all the way. Even trying to push them through on their own on the bottom piece's holes seems impossible. I even tried filing down the inside a bit to no avail. I don't know if this is an aftermarket shell thing or a me thing. Any more force and I can see my hand/tool slipping and giving myself a nasty cut. At this point I'd say to any aspiring NDS repairers to consider just getting a working used one for maybe $10 more and not put yourself through this hell.

I just wanted to restore my old DS plastic shell because the original one became yellow, but after half day on following this tutorial (it says 10 minutes) my DS broke down, so I have to put it in trash. RIP Nintendo DS, 2005-2021
