Thank-you 1A Auto for this informative video. I followed the video to replace the exhaust manifolds on my 2010 F-150 5.4L 3V 4x4. The video was a big help. I had to do a few extra steps to complete my repair but overall the video was a great guide. For anyone attempting this repair I have a few suggestions: 1. Drain the oil and remove the oil filter, it makes accessing the drivers side engine mount plate bolts easier 2. Unbolt the sway bar and let it hang 3. Hacksaw or reciprocating saw the upper passenger side tailpipe to exhaust manifold bolt for easier detachment 4. On 4x4 unbolt the front, or whole, of the front driveshaft to access the drivers side engine mount bolt with impact wrench 5. After the engine is jacked up remove the drivers side engine mount and mounting plate (for drivers side exhaust manifold) 6. Remove the starter (for passenger side exhaust manifold) 7. Remove the exhaust manifold heat shields 8. (Conditionally) Use a Dremel rotary tool and flexible shaft with fiberglass cutoff wheels to cut off the exhaust manifold studs close to bolts ( I attach the safety shield and wear a chainmail glove) 9. (Conditionally) Use a 12mm or 13mm bolt extractor twist socket to remove the exhaust manifold bolts 10. After they're unbolted turn the exhaust manifolds ports facing out for easier removal 11. Plug head exhaust ports with rags before working on it 12. Remove the studs with an extractor chuck for broken bolts and studs 13. With sunken studs you can weld a large bead and use a broken bolt/stud extractor chuck or vice grips instead of welding on a bolt 14. Use high temp epoxy putty to fill in pits on head (and exhaust manifold). 15. Use wire brush drill bits and rotary tool bits to clean off head porting surface and exhaust manifolds (refer to #11!... or take your chances with a shop vac!) 16. Replace the studs with stainless steel studs and maybe copper anti seize. 17. Wipe off the porting surfaces on head and exhaust manifold with acetone soaked rag (new exhaust manifolds are oily) 18. Use new gaskets 19. Install the exhaust manifolds with heat shields off but beware installing the heatshields afterwards might be tricky 20. A 3/8" click torque wrench will probably reach most bolts, maybe use a ratcheting combo wrench to double check tightness. 21. Spray off or brush off the dirt on the transmission and engine mount rests before lowering the jacks.

I maybe overthinking but I would use never seize high temperature compound as you reassemble. You went through a lot of work to make the repair. It shows a quality job to the next guy and will be a lot easier. Very good video.I liked how you didn't just show one side . Also you showed every detail. Keep up the good work.

Nice work. Great video, showing different ways to remove the studs. How many hours did this job take in real life?

Would it be more effective to cut the nuts in top with an angle grinder and whatever ones on the bottom that you can reach and use the extractor sockets to remove the studs? The manifold thickness would leave about a half inch of stud sticking out, and is easier to extract than one that snapped flush. Just an idea, since we're replacing the studs anyway.

Did it without removing any top end components. Just drop exhaust. Not sure how people are abusing their trucks but never had issues with plug breaking or studs breaking.

Compared with the labor put in it, better change that manifold gaskets each time!

Well, I can say a 5.4 3v Ford exhaust manifold is one of the worst jobs EVER to do. If you are a DIY, don't bother.

Very good job. Great work and practical. Great explaining as you worked. I'm replacing the passenger side on my 2009 f150. Your video helped me to map out the job. Thanks!
