Nintendo really did not put a lot of thought into the design of their early hardware. Between no dust covers on the famicom disks and the non-user-serviceable drive belt, the horribly flawed loading mechanism on the NES and the built-in controllers it is no surprise Nintendo put the repair shop phone number on the bottom of their consoles.
Daniel Beaston At least you dont have to worry about finding used famicoms with 3rd party controllers. I hate finding systems that come with 3rd party stuff.
Nope, we're building to it. That's what Season 2 Episode 4 will be about. We're just doing a lot of videos in between that aren't "episodes" that further the 16-bit wars narrative we started with Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. If you want to hear a little behind the scenes, we've heavily retooled that episode several times, and it looks like we'll do so again before it's released! But it's coming by the end of this "season", not to worry! :)
That's Orange To Denshimail: I'd like to play famicom games, but I don't have enough money for the actual system or a converter. What other options do I have? (basically go over some Famiclones :3 )
I'm curious if that socket is the same as the inside of the NES's controller ports, could I just swap that in, and use like an extension cord feed it back out the hole?
SeanOrange (Sorry for the Necro post) I'm curious about the Famicom Peripherals (such as Hori pads, their version of the four score and Zapper through the expansion port on the famicom) to see if they will work with NES games through the NES to Famicom (72 pin female to 60 pin male) adapter. There is a Hori Controller that is apparently for the Famicom with the model number HJ-16 that looks to me like it has the microphone for Controller II. It is unknown if it is actually a microphone or if it even accesses the controller 2 microphone functionality on the Famicom. I would like to know more about that controller specifically.
@@SeanOrange I found this listing for that controller on Ebay. Not sure if it works. The others are scattered across other sites like Yahoo and craigslist.jp. www.ebay.com/itm/famicom-hori-A-controller-HJ-16-RARE-as-is-Nintendo-Official-Made-in-Japan/183781206563?hash=item2aca36aa23:g:cG8AAOSwN3lcuoz1
The opening bit is something we threw together for the video that the Angry PC Engine Nerd is watching. It doesn't really have a name, but if you look at the video source it has the same name as the video: Train Your Game. The end theme is something we've been using for a few years now, and is just called something completely clever like "Season 1 End Theme". XD It's available free as an MP3 on the Famicom Dojo Season 1 DVD!
Your disk drive belt is probably dying. Good thing you asked the question! Now we have an excuse to do a Denshimail about replacing drive belts! (I actually already took apart my Twin Famicom, which I know had a bad belt, and it was just in PIECES everywhere. Part of it was even stuck to the pulleys. Gross! Wish I'd kept all those pieces so I could have demonstrated.)
They look really cool! Mind if we use them in the show notes for a future podcast? We'll give you full credit, of course, and a link to your RU-vid channel, and even Twittter and website if you have them.
I've heard that Nintendo offered to do this for the NES 2, because taking out the AV components actually created the interference patterns in the first place, and later models came "pre-modded", as it were. I have an AV Famicom and an NES 2 both, and haven't rally noticed any video issues. Wasn't really looking, either. I think the Twin Famicom looks pretty good, and is a very nice Famicom system to have, even if you can't find one with a working disk drive... (potentially an easy fix.)
@SeanOrange, I have a bug question about the Disk system, when ever I try to play a game I keep getting Read error 23 or 22, I haven't been able to find the answer else where on the internet could you help me out here?
Other than the AV Famicom. What is the best model Famicom to get controller-wise and no jail-bar video output like the AV Famicom? Still, you can re-modify the AV Famicom and mod the NES 2 even to get rid of the jail-bars. You do it by building a video amp and taking out the filter to add to the amp circuit.
I remember it being used for Zelda and a few other games. I looked into using controllers for the front DB-15 pin port (I think that is the right plug type), and there are controllers like the Hudson Honey Bee Famicom controller. It follows the Famicom's color and design but has turbo function and the cable goes out the top :o) . So, original Famicom models it is.
i think a good mod can be to mod the cord by insert a plug of the same type of the motherboard (or try to take it from an irreparable famicom) so the famicom can have external controller plugs.. nothing that screw up the aestetics or ruin the console PS: sry for my bad english, i hope is comprensible.
Great question! Sadly not, although they should be, right? The Powet.TV crew had these made up specially for PAX East 2010, and we've each been using them ever since. Makes us look pretty official, yeah? ;)
Yes.. Yes we can. But we have about 5 videos in progress right now to finish first. I am a huge fan of the Wonderswan. I own 6 of them! 3 bw, 2 color and 1 crystal.
Send us a picture or attach a video response! I'd love to see it. Seems like a lot of work for an extra 10 inches or so of cable. If there was a decent way to splice those so you could add a few feet to them, I'd be all for that. But your comments reminded me of something I wanted to mention during the Super Famicom episode.
Yeah, I know about the later model NES 2 having a revised motherboard and better video quality. It is the model that has just Mario's bust instead of him walking with a toolbox on the phone number sticker. Yeah, I was think of getting a Twin Famicom. It looks very sleek. I like the look of the red and the black models. Still has the same controller design as the Famicom though. I may get one for a nice FDS setup and then the AV Famicom later. Definitely AV modding if I get a Fami or a Twin.
Well, I bought GBC from UK, on eBay for 12 bucks, in great condition and it came with the game! I'm really confused why prices on Wonderswan and WSColor games are low, but consoles are high as hell.
It's just one of those things that sticks out to Americans, because ever since the NES we've had controller cords that were about twice as long. The Super Famicom and AV Famicom both have 39 in. cables compared to 74 (I think) for their Super SNES and NES/NES 2 counterparts. Seeing that there was a bunch of "wasted" cable space will probably mean nothing to a Japanese gamer.
Oh, BTW, I should add that you can also use a small flat head to help remove the controller plug also, but don't press too hard. Just gently to one side and then the other. Rinse and repeat. Also, DO NOT use a magnetic screwdriver! It may look tempting because it can hold your screws, but you could cause damage to your components in the Famicom because of the magnetism.
Hello, can you please show me cables inside the yoysticks? I decided to change only the cables, but forgot to take a picture of that, now it doesnt work at all
justin rivera sorry for replying to this comment 3 years later, but they have adapters that use the famicom expansion port, that allow for the use of nes controllers
The English version is really rare so it goes for over $200. And yeah it is just a Wonderboy remake. And yeah, the comparison is absurd, which is what we were going for.
Oh sure... ask me that question and make me feel silly for not also opening up my Twin for comparison! :P (I think the Twin uses a different bit, so I probably couldn't have in time for this video anyhow. Yeah, that's the ticket...)
That depends... nine months of constant episodes where we show him without one controller, or nine months of ignoring it entirely and never showing him? So... in other words, par for the course! XD No, we're setting up something rather deliberate...
Dynastic Hero verses Mario? Isn't that like apples verses oranges? And DH was a remake of a Wonder Boy game... does it really cost that much more? If you buy it for the Virtual Console it's only 100 more Wii points. lol
Buy a Famicom Disk System and don't use ROMs? Honestly, they're all different, and I don't know anything about how Nesoid was programmed. It could have been written to allow external save files, but doesn't sound like this was the case. If the ROM also emulates the disk save feature internally, it would make sense that it would lose data after the ROM ends... unless you can save the ROM state and load it again, rather than from a "Fresh" copy. No idea on the disk errors. Bad emulation?
I... who told you that? iPhones are EVERYWHERE. I went to Europe and Japan in the same year. iPhone 4s as far as the eye can see, all over the world. (I even had one myself!)
To Denshimail: I am emulating FDS games (actually, just 3 copies of Akumajo Dracula) on the Nesoid. They work just fine, but after I save (that's the pattern, I believe), I always run into Disk Err.22. Why? And speaking of saving, I cannot retain my save file. Oh, when I press save, it certainly does something, and it's there if I go to the file select immediately after, but when I close the ROM and boot it up again, gone. Solution? Explanation?
