How to Replace Fuel Pump & Sending Unit 01-04 Ford Escape

2004-2007 Escapes with onboard vapor recovery are a little different. There is only one line coming out of the pump and another thicker line with a sensor that passes over it, but does connect to it. The line fitting to the pump has a different style green and black clip. Squeeze the tabs and lift the green clip up. The clip only pops up, it does not come out of the line. The line can then be slid off. The other line with sensor can be pushed out of the way while pulling the module out. The lock ring will be metal and flatter, but still can be removed with a hammer and flathead screwdriver. Make sure you are not hitting the tank, as the ring is much thinner than the plastic one in the video. When you start lifting the pump out you will notice it is attached to the bottom of the tank. Reach in with your fingers (wear rubber gloves to keep the fuel off of you) and squeeze the 2 clips on either side of the top of the module and pull. It will then lift out. Pay attention to which way it was oriented. Go slowly so you don't bend the float rod. Overall its very similar to the video, one less pump connection to undo, a somewhat different lock ring and the pump module that has 2 clips that hold it in place. Even my Haynes manual didn't mention this other option and slightly different procedure.

Replacing the two nearby evap hoses should be part of the job as my daughter's 2003 Mazda tribute hoses are rotten and leaky...

they make it look easy but reinstalling the screw ring back on straight is very hard to do...

if it helps i found that a drum brake tool will spread far enough to hook on to the ring and really help get the ring loose by yourself

The second wire you undid when I did my fuel pump it was already unplugged and I can't find it how do I find the wire that plugs into it please help someone

While removing old fuel pump, crack the lock ring. bought new ring from dealer, it does not want to screw down and appears to be to small. check dealer, part number matches what they gave me. Anyone ever have trouble getting lock ring to tighten down?

Is it possible to replace the fuel level sending unit without replacing the fuel pump?

My 2003 Escape only has 2 connectors... One of the connectors from underneath the metal cover is nowhere to me found. Is that normal? Or is the missing connector my fuel pump's problem? I don't want to replace it if the new one won't work without that connector.

You could add that if installing during low temperatures it is a good idea to warm the screw on retainer in boiling water before installing. I was unable to get mine on until I did that. Went on easy when warmed thoroughly.

i have a 2002 tribute and these instructions were direct, easy to follow and to the point... i replaced the pump in 45 min... i also purchased the pump from 1A Auto Parts and all is well... i would highly recommend purchasing their parts in the future...

I think most modern cars if you gonnna replaced a fuel pump you don't have to take the whole take down

Would this part work on a 2006 mercury Mariner? The top of the fuel pump looks identical to this. I just haven't actually pulled it out.
