How to remove and change your glow plugs (without snapping them).
The OEM part numbers for the VW Passat B8 2.0 TDI (2015 plate):
* Glow plug with pressure sensor: 03L 905 061 K
What I used : m.autodoc.co.u...
* Glow plugs: 04L 963 319 B
what I used: m.autodoc.co.u...
I did a bit of research and could not find both glow plugs with and without pressure sensor from the same brand other than from AutoDoc.
Download the AutoDoc app and use my code for a £10 discount: AC23962803.
They ship from Germany so it will take at least a week to arrive but it was worth the wait as with discounts I saved about £30 on parts.
If you’re like me and not a mechanic (btw I did this for the first time) you might need the following tools:
Torque wrench: amzn.to/3MwmKnQ
Do use this if you’re not confident in your arm not over tightening the glow plugs. (Ideally set to 15-20Nm)
Adaptor for the wrench in case it’s not 1/4. amzn.to/3tHS7TG
Socket extension bar, so you can reach the glow plugs. amzn.to/35ZdzeK
Set of sockets (you’ll need 10 and 12mm). amzn.to/3vKIWol
WD40 to loosen up the glow-plugs (crucial). amzn.to/3hOOaHp
Glow plug socket pliers. amzn.to/3Kq9Sh5
I used a dab of high temperature grease but reading through forums there are mixed opinions weather to use it or not as you might over-tighten the glow plugs. amzn.to/3vLoGCY
However if you trust your hands dexterity, and probably easier to use, you can get a T handle socket wrench, which is what I used and preferred to use. amzn.to/3HZyETS
You can also buy the tools from AutoDoc.
The hardest part from this DIY service was to clean the debris around the glow plugs before taking them out. If you don’t manage to clean properly, you risk getting sand and dust inside the bay. If the vacuuming doesn’t work, try to use a high pressure blow. And scraping around helps to breakup the muck.
PS do this at your own risk! Quite a few things that can go wrong. I took the risk after getting a quote from a garage with a £230 difference to me doing it, sorry couldn’t justify it.

@@DanielSarvari thanks for answering. I'm euro 5 so don't have the 3rd glow plug with the sensor.

Is it necessary to replace all of them if you have only one plug faulty? And one more thing, do you have to erase this fault with diagnostic to get this engine check light off from dashboard? Thanks!

You don’t have to replace all of them if you know only one is faulty, but in general if one is gone the rest will follow soon, and if you go through the hassle of replacing one might as well do them all. You do have to erase the error, but you don’t need anything sophisticated, as it can be done via OBD11 or similar from AliExpress. 😉

I've only replaced one so far and after approx 1 year another one. No need to waste your money. Replacing all 4 instead 1 takes 4x longer. You also need to screw the glow plug to a correct torque as specified by manufacturer.

@@kubizdalis101 Each to their own I guess. My thought just as I said initially, why go at it 4 times, when they’ll all go soon… do it once, job done, see at it in another 5+ years. Ratchet to manufacturers torque… sensible enough not to tighten it too much to damage the thread or get it stuck. A proper ratchet would almost cost as much as taking it to a garage.

What size socket did you use for the pressure sensor glow plug?. Also was there any signs that it was faulty?
@DanielSarvari

12mm for the pressure sensor, 10mm for the rest. The pressure sensor didn’t come up with a problem but was recommended to change at the same time. Many would disagree especially due to the cost of these… 😢

better to use a small amount of engine oil to use as penetration

checked a vw manual for my 2018 passat alltrack 140Kw diesel engine, 17Nm for the regular glow plug (059963319AB). 12Nm for the pressure sensor glow plug (03L905061K).
