I just love watching you two. Your relationship seems a bit like mine with my wife. She is small and smart, I try to fix stuff while she constantly questions my methods and makes humorous/sarcastic comments, but we still have fun after 37 years together. I'm wondering where it all went wrong, lol... 😊

Sorry I know I've already left a comment, but wanted to come back and say "y'all do good work" in response to the tail end of the video! And yes, us American mechanics DO love our old air conditioned Buicks and Pontiacs (3800 series 2!!) and Ford Rangers (4cyl version ONLY) and 90's Hondas (2.2L any flavor/version of it!) - all of these go 300,000 miles (that's a lot more in Euro-lometers). But preferably the Buick. It's like driving your old broken in recliner to work 😁

Disco 2 rock crawler has a solid front axle. No half shafts like on the later mall crawlers. Much more reliable. I am in awe of your wrenching skills. I enjoy watching both of you work as a team. I keep watching to see if something might apply to my Disco 2 but so far, only mall crawler fixes. Good to see your son is carrying on the craft tradition. Beautiful work on that crowbar.

Sunday wouldnt be Sunday without LR Time, another great video guys. I had to take my driveshafts out recently as they had developed a leak at the oil seals. I later did some reading up and found that there is a vent pipe coming up from the diff that has a tenancy to block at the tiny filter at the end and pressurise the diff over time. I have now fitted the upgraded vent filter and all seems good.

Good morning from New Mexico USA. It comforting that you have an assistant to help you with calling out the specs. I just got done swapping out an Engine for a 2010 ford Taurus. Took my time. 3 days total. No torque specs. I just turned 68 last month. I really enjoy working on my own cars and trucks. It's a never ending tasks for maintenance. Last month. Today I removed the half shaft from diff by using an 8mm rope (double braid sailing type) and a maul. The groove at the diff side of the inner cv housing is perfect for an 8mm rope. I used a taut line hitch and then snugged it up really tight. Then I tied a bowline about 800mm or so along the standing end of the rope then passed the head of my maul through it. Bowline just needs to be out far enough to give you the room to swing the maul about 1/3rd of a distance you would swing if you were splitting a log. Once the head of maul reaches the point where the rope becomes taut, the momentum is transferred to the cv housing and it pops out nicely. This works for me because I am on the ground.

I recently purchased a 2011 Range Rover that also needed new front axle half shafts. I installed the same brand of axles you installed. Shortly after the installation both side would work loose out of the differential. I pulled the the axles and found that the inner retainer snap rings were not as strong as the original LR retainer snap rings. I replaced the Chinese snap rings with new LR retainer snap rings and now the axles stay in place in the differential now.

We were not able to get any other shafts for boths sides other than the ones we bought, in all of Germany. We just bought the left side shaft for Fabian from a better manufacturer. But also only the left side was available. We are the kind of people who have to adress a problem now, not later. We don't have the time to wait for parts to become availabe again. If they fail prematurely, that would be then good RU-vid content for us. 😅👍But we'll deal with that when the time comes. My cheap aftermarket propshaft is still going strong. 💪🙋‍♀️Vera

Hi Vera and Christian, After 11 years in the United States, I have move home to England and had to sell my Freelander 2. Just before I sold it, my CV shaft failed and was clicking like yours! Mine was making a metallic ticking when turning the car slowly. I almost bought a Discovery 4 when I got home, but on the nicest one I found, with 60k miles on it, I did some checks and found that the air suspension was leaking. It was a good car, but according the service records a lot of money was spent misdiagnosing the problem and after a new compressor and new front shocks, it was still taking a long time to raise at the front and I decided I would play it safe and buy something else. I used your discussions for figuring out slow air suspension, and how the system works, to understand the issue. This is 100% a problem with repair shops and not the car. I eventually settled on a Discovery Sport, because it makes more sense for me and has coil springs. It has only 45k miles and has every option I could ask for. I am not confident enough to maintain the air suspension myself and it would be my only car, so because I cannot trust the repair shops I can't own a full size Discovery. It would have had a warranty, but with limits I don't think would cover all the work. I am very excited to pick up my new Discovery Sport. I think you would like it, even if it is more of a mall crawler, but they are also very capable, like my Freelander was. I plan to take similar trips that you two have taken around Europe, so if I am in Germany and if you want to have a beer, it would be nice to meet you both and I will reach out. Thank you again for a great video. One day I hope to buy a Defender, so maybe I can use some of the lessons here on that car one day. Have a nice weekend.
@Vera_and_Christian

It’s a good idea to stay away from a Disco 3 or 4 in certain cases. If you rely on workshops, this car can empty your bank account quickly. We get many mails with unfortunate stories of people buying used Discovery’s, usually cheap but with above 250 t km. The repairs required can be devastating. Holy you enjoy your Sport. Good choice 👍. Christian
@louiswilliamhicks
@louiswilliamhicks Год назад
@@Vera_and_Christian Christian, thank you. I came to understand that I myself didn't need a Discovery 4 and am more than happy with the Discovery Sport. I have seen what they're capable of and if as you have seen many times, a Panda 4x4 can reach most places, I am sure a Discovery Sport will get there too without breaking a sweat. Haha. They seem relatively simple and I can work on it myself, so it is perfect. I also got a 3 year approved warranty, so shouldn't have to worry about any major repairs for a while. I hope you and Vera are well. Best wishes.

Robin is a very skilled young man! Great job and very timely for me. I would keep the OEM CV joins and rebuild them. The OEM is usually stronger than aftermarket. Clearly they seem more robust that the replacement ones you have installed. Vera, there is always a little metal "fluff" on the drain plugs of diff's and automatic gear box's. It isn't a big deal. If you have chunks of metal, that is bad. I still have the OEM CV joints in my LR3, it has done 239,000km now. My son (the apprentice mechanic ) is replacing the CV boots on the passenger side for me, the inner is torn, so I said to replace both boots. That is the left side here in Australia. While he is doing it the tie rod boot on the same side is being replaced, it is also torn.

Hello Christian and Vera! Very nice video today! I did this job 2 years ago only at the driver Side. The outer rubber boot was cracked. My first idea was only to change the rubber boots on the genuine LR driveshaft. But while searching for the parts online I found these incredible cheap Driveshafts from GSP. I payed about 85€ for the left one and about 100€ for the longer one. I have driven 20.000km with the new GSP shaft on the driver side. Till today no problems with this cheap shaft. (No Offroad usage). Please inform us all about your experience with the cheap GSP shafts. This company is new for me. Gruß, Thomas

If they fail, I install new joints on the OEM. Now with them in the shelf it’s possible. Christian

The two of you have a unique chemistry that make these videos enjoyable to watch. Your explanations and attention to detail make me want to work on my own car! Alas, though I am a mere Toyota owner, so I'll probably never get the opportunity 🙂. I have a question on the wheel spacers, are the Land Rovers produced with them from the factory or are they an aftermarket addition? Keep up the great work guys!
@Vera_and_Christian
@Vera_and_Christian Год назад
They are aftermarket. The brand is mentioned in the video🙋‍♀️

You might want to point out if you are only doing the bearing on the long shaft side you have to release the torsion bar on both sides otherwise you cannot slide the shaft out.

Everything we did in order to get the shaft out is shown in the video. 👍🙋‍♀️

Hi Christiian, Im suprised you are not using a battery impact gun it save running a compressor, also when i need a little heat instead of using a hot blow torch, as you showing in the video I bought a cheap induction coil heater, it works well and does not set fire to the rubber dust boots, anyway i realy enjoy the videos,

Really nice setup. I tried to remove my axle nut on my Saab 93 and I broke the extension bar even after I used heat in the nut. Not good. I’ll have to take it into a shop.

Sooooo entertaining. I think it would be extremely entertaining if you compiled an 'out-takes' video. Really looking forward to the 'lift-the-lid' project.

I see how are you checked for play in the inner CV joint. How do you know it’s not the output shaft bearing of the differential? Just watch for weather the CV ball is loose versus the deaf bearing? Thank you, love the videos.

Another great video both of you.. You worry about the sound of the impact, when you have a huge power hammer set up in the foundry? In the nicest possible way, I'm glad you're not my neighbours! ;-) Chris
@Vera_and_Christian
@Vera_and_Christian Год назад
The power hammer is in a isolated room. Not too bad outside. Also the time of day plays a role. Christian

Not sure if first time installing a CV axle but 5 hours is very long time usually 1 hour or less a side they usually slide out and back in a simple job , but that just me I find easy to intall

Another excellent video, well done both of you. When you fitted the oil seals do they go in and stop against a flange? On my what-cruiser I have to measure the distance from the edge of the axle casing to the seal or the new one could go in too far. I'm surprised you had so much trouble removing the old shaft and those of us working on the ground wouldn't have room for a 100 year old bar to fit in there so a big Toyota hammer combined with a small Land Rover bar does the trick.
@Vera_and_Christian
@Vera_and_Christian Год назад
The seal is installed flush. Yes, it is possible to insert them too deep. Christian
