Your video explained everything perfectly! I changed the lights on my 2001 Civic EX. They're sized 74 bulbs but if you're getting LEDs make sure they're correct or you'll just have brights spots on your cluster, I stuck with halogens for this

I followed your steps in hoping to disable the low washer fluid light. But I guess these are all just the red lights. I'd rather just disable the light than go through the hassle of accessing, cleaning, and possibly replacing the washer level sensor. Any tips? (I also seemed to lower the power of one of the top lights...maybe I didn't click the blue/green assembly back in properly?)
@6speeddakota
@6speeddakota 8 лет назад
Try unplugging the sensor and see if it goes away, if not, then try jumping the two pins on the connector together with a piece of wire and then it should go away. If you have a bulb missing in the cluster, the light will escape out the hole and make it look dimmer.

What you can do is try remove the cluster like I did, pull a gauge light out, shine a light in the hole and see which one lights up and repeat until you find the burned out one, you may find that one of the warning lights has a burned out bulb.

@6speeddakota
@6speeddakota 7 лет назад
I can't find any bulbs for the cluster other than the transmission indicators. Before diving into a full cluster replacement, I would double check that you have communication at the data link connector, as sometimes the fuse may go and cause the connector to not have communication, which can prevent the check engine from lighting up to indicate there's an issue

hey any help for a guy w a 05 civic dx with an egr prob...i installed a new after market on from auto zone and i also cleaned the intake manifold but keep gettin a check engine for a p0401 code insufficient egr flow any ideas????????????
@6speeddakota
@6speeddakota 8 лет назад
Ok, first off, I've heard mixed reviews about autozone parts, and I've had issues with them myself as I put an IAC valve in my truck in their parking lot and my truck wouldn't idle at all. I ended up walking right back in and returning it on the spot. Those intake manifolds are really long, so you have to have a good long cleaning instrument, and try and gouge all the crud out. What a lot of people use is a piece of old speedometer cable almost like a roto rooter and bore out all the crap in the passage. Worst case scenario, you're going to have to remove the intake manifold. You could try soaking it with intake cleaner overnight and see if that softens it up as well. One sure fire method to test if the port is clogged. the engine shouldn't run if the egr valve is off. If it does, then it's really pluged. The idea is that if there's such a large vacuum leak through the EGR port, then it won't run. Another thing you can do is unplug the EGR valve and apply power and ground to the appropriate pins on the valve while it's running and the motor should stall out since the EGR isn't active at idle. If it doesn't, either your valve is bad, or your passage is blocked. You should feel the valve click when you apply power if it's working correctly.

So... on my 05 Civic I had few dead backlight... so I started to replace them with some LED lights, I did it one by one to figure out which one was which... anyways... Not sure what happened but I must have shorted something because now non of gauge lights are working. Well not all but speed/tach/fuel/temp lights only are all dead now. Odometer still works + other check lights still work. Oh and my P,R,N,D,D3,D2 lights now have slight flickering too. Can I buy a replacement (used) circuit board where lights all plug in? or is this entire cluster a single part? ?
@6speeddakota
@6speeddakota 10 лет назад
you might have shorted something, also because LED's are polarized and only work one way, you can try flipping the LED around to see if that will work
@Av8r6o4
@Av8r6o4 9 лет назад
+xxgg Did you ever figure out what the problem was? I'm having the same issue...
@xxgg
@xxgg 9 лет назад
+Av8r6o4 Yeah, Not sure how it happened as all I did was plugged in LEDs, than when I plugged it back to the car, I had a small amout of smoke + electrical burn smell. After taking the cluster out again and taking the back cover off to observe the circuit board I noticed that there was small section of circuit was burnt and connection broke. Yeah... this is scary moment for someone like myself who doesn't know anything about mechanical side of things. So anyways, broken curcit connection was very small and difficult to solder it back with a small wire. I some how managed to solder it back, and all the lights are back working. Now fast forward to future... this only lasted few months as only few LEDs are working now. I am not going to bother replacing it anymore, haha. Also, if I were to do it again, I would use the OEM light bulb as LEDs doesn't spread the lights much. Hope that helped.

@6speeddakota

Brian James You're not messing around with anything to do with the airbag, so you don't have to disconnect the battery. If you were messing around in the steering column, then I'd highly recommend doing so. I recently had my airbag replaced under recall at the dealership, and they didn't even disconnect the battery. I don't know what the logic behind that one was though

@6speeddakota
@6speeddakota 7 лет назад
The bulbs you can fix by doing this procedure. As for the temperature gauge not working, it's usually 1 of 3 things, either the gauge doesn't work, the temperature sensor doesn't work, or you have a stuck open thermostat that keeps the engine stone cold all the time, the third one is pretty easy to figure out because usually you'll have pretty lousy heat coming from the vents

the OEM bulbs emit light in many directions as it must pass through "light tunnels" to illuminate the cluster. LEDs this size usually only shine 1 direction and make the dash look like crap, lighting brightly only directly in front of the bulb.

Thank you for the video....very helpful....this is Greg even though I'm logged in with my wife's account.....I replaced all the bulbs in my 2002 Honda Civic with LED's (they cost $11.65 for 10 on Ebay with free shipping)....I think that as the stock bulbs age they get more and more dim, because in the before photo, you can see how dim mine were: LED bulb link: www.ebay.com/itm/121175926771?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEWNX%3AIT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 Before photo: www.dropbox.com/s/0d96mxp0qc6yzwu/Before.jpg After photo: www.dropbox.com/s/nme8km87rdmqg2g/After.jpg In the after photo, it looks like the odometer is blinding bright, but it's not.....that's just how the photo turned out.....if you do this to your car, LED's only work in one position so if they don't light, remove them and reverse the way they plug into the socket, and plug them back in...... Needle nose pliers are the tool you need. When removing them, grab the white LED when it's exposed so it doesn't come unplugged and fall inside (I didn't take the white piece off the back)....... Put Saran Wrap over the tips of the needle nose pliers so they are non-conductive......some videos say to disconnect the battery, but since you have to test every LED as you go along, you can't do this..... the sockets for the lamps are picky....some LED's wouldn't work and I'd move them to a different hole and then they worked fine.....a bit of juggling and they were all working.....the bulb with the blue base is the cruise control indicator and it wouldn't work with an LED (it stayed on even when the car wasn't running) but since the original with the blue base wasn't burnt out, I just put it back in.....that bulb doesn't seem dim....what's strange is there are things that light up and display on my dash with no replaceable bulb behind them.....they must have soldered non-replaceable bulbs behind these.... Something that's messed up is they sell replacement "clusters" (all the dials in the dashboard behind the steering wheel) on Ebay and the mileage is saved in each cluster, so replacing one with a new one would show you have zero miles on your car...the chip that stores mileage should be mounted somewhere on the frame so cars can't change the amount of actual miles displayed just by changing a part....they had a brand new one that would fit my car on Ebay for a little over $80....
