The repair shop said it was going to take a minimum of 3 hours to fix and cost $150 plus parts. It took me 20 minutes, probably could have taken 5 mins if I wasn't a newbie. =) Thanks again Mike!
Thanks for posting this video. I used it to fix my burnt out check engine light bulb in my 97 civic. Once you pull out the instrument cluster you may find extras bulbs inserted into blank spots. I just swapped my dead bulb for a working one that wasn't being used in the display.
The airbag system will hold a battery charge for a short time. Disconnecting the battery and waiting will allow the SRS system to drain its power in case you hit a sensor so that the bag will not blow in your face.
Thanks for your reply. But I actually asked about the tacho. Mine stock cluster does not come with tachometer. Was wondering if i replace it with another cluster which has the tacho, would it work?
Comment on your video: Removing a Honda Civic instrument cluster Great Video mike very well instructed ,attention to detail, well done. Since you are obviously a great instructor could you possibly tell me.........If i change a cluster in a 92 civic DX base model with no tachometer to a 92 model that has a tach. Will i have all the electrical plugs needed for it to function or will i have to wire in the tach part of the cluster ? any help would be appreciated.
Also after doing a tuneup on my 99 civic I noticed my vacuum hoses are plugged off with screws what or why would someone want to do that and what kind of problems could it cause me short or long term.
Hi i guess my mechanic has to take mine out to replace the check engine light would that be back there? that didn't seem too hard so I was hoping they areable to keep the labor down labor price down...?
Actually, you should check into this. The letter of the law can vary between States. I believe on the Federal level changing the mileage to the original value is legal if done when the swap occurs. Another alternative, as other people suggest, is move the speedometer / odometer from the original cluster over. It's a relatively easy job to do, and shouldn't take more than 15 minutes with both out of the car.
Yes it is easy to remove. The hardest part is undoing the couplers in the back. Push in the lock tabs and pull straight back on the coupler not the wires.
you can actually. you have to take apart the cluster right to the gauges and take out the speedometer screws at the back. speedometer slips out and you put yours in and put the 4 screws in the back, back in. there is a youtube video on it
If I only want to change the plastic frame around the cluster. Will I still need to disconnect my battery? Is it bad for the car if it stays with the negative connector off from the battery (how much time maximum)?
** When im referring to disconnecting the battery. The main reason is that I dont want the airbags to blow open if I only want to remove the plastic trim.
Does the clear plastic cover come off of the cluster? It looks like it just slides off, from the clip spots. My wife's cluster cover is all beat up and taped over in places (from a previous owner.) I am thinking of making a trip to the junkyard.
Yes the front cover as 7 molded tabs that you push down to release the clear cover from the cluster. 2 tabs at the top, 3 at the bottom, and 1 on each side.
Hey mike question. I have a 99honda civic and the dashlights are out. How do I know if it is the dimmer switch or just changing the light bulb. I just bought the car and the stock radio has been replaced with CD player. In progress of checking the illumination wire behind the CD player. Already changed the fuse but still nothing at all.
If all of the bulbs are out check the dimmer switch. If you have some lights it should be a bulb blown. Could any wires have been knocked loose from changing the radio?
Thank you so much Mike problem solved. Everything works and lights are on. Im sure everyone including myself appreciate's someone with your knowledge and experience it surely goes a long way..... Thanx
The bulbs are on the backside of the instrument cluster. Look for the rectangular shaped knobs. They will be black, gray, or brown in color. The different colors are for different brightness or color tinting. Just turn 1/8 counter-clockwise to remove.
Should work if both are from the same model of car. If you change to the lower km cluster be sure to record the difference in miles from the 2 clusters so there are no problems selling the car. If the car title says that XXX km are on car but now has xxx km, title office will ask why it is lower.
The airbag light being on doesn't mean the whole system is dead. The light could be on because of a broken wire, loose coupler, bad senser, so the bag may still be powered. Best to undo the battery to be safe..
amigo! d q c puede c puede, pero es contra la ley (cosa q a uno no le importa en lo mas minimo, jeje..) el problema es q es d lo mas tedioso, creeme! t arepentiras.
