Watch how to replace and install your brakes and rotors on a Ford Mustang. This job will be the same for years 1994-2004. They will be exactly the same for 94-98 and very similar for the years 1999-2004. Plus all brake jobs are very similar anyway. Its a pretty easy job and you can save money doing it yourself so check this out and and there go get the things you need to DO IT YOURSELF.

Wow... it’s 2020 and your video is by far the best one to show step by step how to replace rotor and brake pads. I was stuck on the resistance from the new when putting back the caliper.. I thought I was doing it wrong and forcing it. You saved me a a lot of time.

There are a few additional steps you left out. If you remove the 2 big bolts that hold the caliper bracket, you need to make sure you apply locktite and torque to about 80 ft lbs. They need to be really tight. Before putting the rotor onto the wheel hub, clean out any dirt or rust between the 2 pieces so that they mate together flat. If a rust particle gets in between them it can make the rotor sit crooked and wobble a tiny bit which cuaes all kinds of problems.You also need to inspect the caliper bracket where the pads ears make contact. The half circle areas. If the metal is worn, you need to replace the brackets. If it's all good, then apply a little grease to the pads ears because the pads slide back and forth just like the caliper slides back and forth. Lastly, make sure the pins that the caliper slides on are greased so that the caliper can move easily back and forth. If the caliper can't slide easily it will cause the pads to drag.Hope that helps.

Excellent points regarding the rust buildup, clean as much rust out using wire brush. 85ft lbs on the caliper bracket, 23ft lbs to the caliper per factory manual. My front brake rotors were replaced 2 years ago with new pads (auto shop installed) and I've noticed wheel shakes when braking. Front (driver's side) has a slight uneven surface so I need to tackle this soon. Awesome video and this gives me a refresher fort this type of work. Definitely will take photos before each disassembly so i won't screw it up lol Plus I'm taking my time.
@KrishnaSingh-ow1ie
@KrishnaSingh-ow1ie 11 месяцев назад
80 foot pound are you sure. I thought it was 60. You have to make sure you don't tight it too much or you can warp the tread
@JasonWW2000
@JasonWW2000 11 месяцев назад
@@KrishnaSingh-ow1ie No. You won't warp anything. I would suggest you look up the torque specs for your particular automobile if you're not sure.

Note on this. That brake caliper bracket can be a ANIMAL to take off. Those two bolts that are in there can be miserable to get off if you are planning on changing out the rotors. I suggest getting a breaker bar from Lowes or Home Depot. Also get a 15mm 6 point socket. These bolts round off too easily. I did mine today and I had to borrow a breaker bar and a 6 point socket from a neighbor. This is at 3:28 in the video.
@BryanOP
@BryanOP 8 лет назад
OH FUCKCKKBFBFBYUIWFBHUILEBFUIL YES. If anyone else plans on doing this those two bolts are going to need a breaker bar and 15mm 6 point for sure. I needed to install a new wheel hub assembly and those were the most time consuming part. I ruined two of my 15mm sockets.

Thumbs up, this is as well done a guide on changing the rotors and pads as I've come across on the web. I'm anything but a car expert, so most of the time I take my car in to get work done. But every now and then when I come across a video like this, it gives me confidence that I can at least do something things on my own. I was actually wondering if you could perhaps lend me some advice. I'm driving an 03 Mustang, and lately when I brake I can hear a sort of scraping outside my window on the drivers side. When I come to a halt, I can actually feel a grinding come from that drivers side wheel area. The car doesn't pull to one side (so I'm crossing my fingers it isn't a caliper issue). I was told last year that my break pads on the front wheels were at 40%. Also this problem started to occur after a very cold snow storm in which I was driving my car everyday. It's why I'm kind of thinking that it could perhaps be a warped rotor and that the brake pads ought to be replaced as well. But I was curious if you could offer any insight? Thanks!
@TheRykerDane
@TheRykerDane 9 лет назад
hockeyavalanche73 You are welcome for the video. it sounds like your brake pads are low and are grinding right on the rotor itself. It is possible your pad is gone and now you have metal on metal grinding which will in turn damage your rotor and it will need to be replaced if it has too deep of cuts in it. Your rotors can warp but usually this happens in very hot weather with lots of stop and go driving. If warped you can just have them turned for about 15 dollars at a parts store. Hope that helps!
@hockeyavalanche73
@hockeyavalanche73 9 лет назад
TheRykerDane Thanks for the quick response! I'll just replace the rotors and the pads at the same time.

I watched 8 videos before finding this video. This is the best one man. Thanks for the good video! 1 question: should I change the brake fluid? How do I do that? I bought a bleeder kit (because it was on sale at habor freight) and synthetic brake fluid.
@TheRykerDane
@TheRykerDane 10 лет назад
Harsha R Thanks a lot, glad they helped! Suck what you can out of the reservoir tank with a siphon and then let the rest come out the brake cables. But its going to be messy no matter how you do it. You usually need to change brake fluid though unless you think its dirty or you just want to.
@JasonWW2000
@JasonWW2000 8 лет назад
+Harsha R It's good to change it every 3-5 years because it absorbs moisture which can lead to rusty brake lines internally and lower boiling points. I drain all the fluid I can from the reservoir with my mityvac then add fresh fluid. Then I drain the old fluid from each bleeder valve until I see the fresh new fluid come through.

@TheRykerDane
@TheRykerDane 9 лет назад
I hope the brake pads were the correct size, and also hopefully the low wear clips were installed correctly. But most likely it could be that your rotors are warped and you need to have them turned, (re cut) or you need to replace them. The rotors will warp due to overheating and time. hope that helps!

Uneven brake pad wear is an issue with your calipers either from not greasing the slide pins, which I noticed you didn't do, or you need new calipers. Also you should wear gloves before spraying brake cleaner all over your hands.

Jacob Lara Yes, but just wait till you do both sides, then pump the brakes.
@southdoverptf8614
@southdoverptf8614 9 лет назад
Excellent, informative video. One question though: Why do you pump the brake pedal with the master cylinder reservoir cap off? I was always told doing so is what puts air into the brake line. I have a 2001 Mustang Convertible base I am getting ready to change the brake pads on. By the way, should I replace the rotors when changing the brake pads even if they look like they're in good shape? I don't know if they've ever been replaced; just bought the car in October 2014. Thank you, KB
@TheRykerDane
@TheRykerDane 9 лет назад
South Dover PTF Pumping the brake pedals with the cap off will not cause any problems, but usually you will only pump them back up after everything is back together. You need to pump them so that you put some pressure back in the lines and that your brakes will work when you back up or drive forward. Also you do not need to replace your rotors unless you think they are too thin, or that they are warped. Then they either need to be turned (shaved) or replaced. Some auto stores turn them for 10-15 dollars or you can buy new ones for 35-40. If they are stock and nothing in the brake system has never been replaced, then you might want to have a fresh start with everything. Hope the video helped, and I have a video for both the front and rear. Good luck!
@southdoverptf8614
@southdoverptf8614 9 лет назад
TheRykerDane Thank you for the quick reply back. If I decide to replace the rotors, do they come in pairs like the pads, or are they sold separately/individually? Would it be okay just to replace the front rotors, since about 75% of the stopping power is in the front brakes? Lastly, how come you didn't bleed the brakes at the calipers? Forgive me, I'm a newbie at this. Thank you again, KB.
@TheRykerDane
@TheRykerDane 9 лет назад
South Dover PTF Rotors are sold individually. And yes you can just replace the front rotors. Either both front or both rear. Also, you do not need to bleed the brakes unless you disconnect the brake lines. This is when it turns into a mess and is a little more challenging. Plus you need two people when bleeding the brakes. But on a normal brake job, you just pull the caliper off and keep the brake line attached to the caliper. replace pads, and then put the caliper back on after you press in the piston. And done. I hope that helps!

I'm having a repeat problem I wonder if you could help with. I can't seem to find the answer elsewhere online. I have a 2000 V6 Mustang. The front drivers side brakes are dragging. I took them off, cleaned up the moving parts; the clips and where the clips slid; but they are still dragging and getting worse. As I understand it this is a typical problem with these brakes. Is that true? Can you tell me what's going on and what I should replace to fix it? I'm on a fixed budget, so I'll go with the standard replacement parts, but if is there an upgrade I could replace parts with to avoid this from happening again...this is the second time this has happened with one 124,000 miles on the car....I'd consider a more expensive part(s).
@TheRykerDane
@TheRykerDane 7 лет назад
You can always remove the clips. They are just there to make a sound when the pads get low. Or you can trim the part that drags if you need to have the clips in to fit. Some require it in
@jonreiser2206
@jonreiser2206 7 лет назад
Ah,...it took me a second to see where things went awry. I made it sound like the clips are dragging. This is not what I meant. These pads didn't even come with clips. I was referring to the metal pieces the pads sort of slide over. Beside the point anyhow. Sorry. I went to work again and tried pulling the pistons and cleaning them. I got one out, but not the other. (My caliper has two). I also pulled the pins. None of this helped much. Now I suspect the caliper simply needs replacing, period. The manual makes other suggestions as to what could be wrong. I just don't have the know-how to be sure what's not working properly. I thank you for any assistance, though, I realize at this point, I may just need a pro to fix it for me. Having said that I'm still likely to replace the caliper as it's pretty inexpensive and easy to do so. If I may ask another question, In your experience is it usually the caliper causing this problem? I don't suspect the line itself. Thanks again. I was actually surprised you responded because I noticed after the fact that you posted this in 2014.

For some reason the bolts on the back of the rotor are super stuck

My Mustang has two brake pistons in the caliper and looks nothing like this. It has 3 clips I have to put on not just one.

I know this was posted a while back and you may not be watching for comments but I followed your video to replace the pads and rotors on a 1998 Mustang and the bottom bolt for the caliper, which you stated was a T-50 head, is too small for the T-50 and the T-45 is close to stripping the bolt head. Any ideas? Can you remove the whole assembly with just taking out the other two bolts? I didn't think about that until just now. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Eddie Taylor Well thats weird. But it is possible that the factory bolts were replaced with updated bolt heads. So they are still torx? If so it is going to be between a 45-55. So I am not sure why they are not coming loose. Maybe there is dirt or rust corrosion in the star hole? You can take off the caliper bracket assembly and slide it off, but then it might be tricky to push the piston back in so you can get that whole assembly back one. Whichever way you go, good luck!

Thanks for the feedback. Glad to know I have options because my wrist and knuckles are breaking more than that bolt is coming free! I tried vice grips but cannot get a tight enough fit but I'll look again to see if I can push the rubber boot back more.

No insult taken. I stared hard at the thing for several minutes trying to wrap my head around which way to turn the bolt and verified by watching the video again. I'm an IT guy, I fix computers, not cars so I have to think through these things carefully. Appreciate the reminder! I know I was going clockwise since the ratchet slipped (because the darn T-45 is too loose) and I slammed my hand into the axel... :)

if it is really bad then you will have to drill it out. Otherwise you need to get a vice grips on it
@soulchain247
@soulchain247 10 лет назад
I thought you were supposed to bleed them, is there a reason why you didnt?
@TheRykerDane
@TheRykerDane 10 лет назад
You only need to bleed your brakes if you disconnect the brake line itself. Then there is an issue with air in the line and that is why you bleed them. Otherwise, you just pop the reservoir tank lid and push the piston back in and you are good to go. hope that helps, thanks for watching. If you need other mustang repair videos then check out my channel. I have a big playlist of fix it vids for your mustang. thanks!

Great job I watched for the sizes and stuff I need before I start... However you should check pedal feel before putting tire back on because you may need to bleed the brakes

just a question from a total noob, you happens to have a boyfriend who knows all this stuff but isn't around....anyways, why can't you change the brackets too and the ugly stuff?
@TheRykerDane
@TheRykerDane 10 лет назад
You could, but I am going to give the bracket and caliper a paint job, and thats a separate job, because you have to remove and paint and let dry before you install again. It makes them look good.
