Went to start my bike one time and heard a terrible clunking sound, I knew it was from the starter jackshaft so after taking the primary cover off this is what I had to do.
This is my first semi instructional video on fixing harleys, been meaning to make some like this for a while but never got around to it.
When the jackshaft broke being over 1000 miles away from my town where my dad has a mc harley only shop I decided to tackle this project right where I was at rather then trucking all the way home to the snow.
At first I anticipated having to take off the whole clutch basket to get the shaft out so I bought the extra tools like big sockets and an impact driver to get the job done but luckily I didnt end up needing it!
Not sure about older fxr's but I crossed the part number with a 94 FXR and 99 Dyna and its the same part number.
This bike is a 1999 FXR2 with buell front end and rear wheel.
Hope you enjoy and this helps someone out there!
I have a few videos on my instagram of the day before I did the whole job and made this video so feel free to check that out too, also have a bunch of other bikes you might find pics or videos of along the way.

Fun video. Maybe next time try doing the video from the beginning, I thought it was the cleanest driest primary I'd ever seen. Have you ever thought of doing anything on pre-1970 Harley motors and transmissions. Now that would be something to watch.

Didn't have the idea to make the video until I was already at that step so I put the cover back on for the video haha. I actually didn't clean it a ton beforehand, the oil I run keeps things really clean cause it doesn't seem to let the clutch plates wear out creating all that muddy shit

Also I could do that next time I work on an old bike I'll try to remember the camera! If I ever have to tear into my 67 shovelhead I'll def get a video

That was not the Jackshaft --it was the pinion gear

Whoops you're right! Still everything stands. Luckily there is visual reference so someone couldn't mix them up

Nice video, I have to do this as well, my starter makes a terrible grinding noise? and then sometimes it doesnt so im guessing it could be that pinion gear with some worn teeth like yours? anyway I have to remove that primary cover and take a look to make sure but im pretty sure its same issue as yours.

Mine broke about half of them so it sounded horrendous but good luck with your issue! Hope it's as simple as changing the gear like mine was

TYPE F OIL ??? never seen that being used before... let me know how the clutch holds up...

Works amazing, I been using it for years. I started after installing some Barnette clutches and the instructions said to use atf type f. I've used it in every bike since cause clutch feels wayyyyy better with it as well as not wearing out half as fast. I work on Harleys so I've changed alot of oil and always when I change anything with hd formula + it drains out looking muddy and very dirty. Every time I drain the atf type f it comes out looking like I could put it back in. Night and day.

I'm a firm believer in 3 separate different oils for all 3 holes.

how do you get the jackshaft and the drive gear to line up?
@gauthier8822
@gauthier8822 3 года назад
are you talking about the starter ring gear?
@gauthier8822
@gauthier8822 3 года назад
also do you mean when trying to get it together or after it is together? Once its in it wont always be lined up perfectly but when you hit the start button and it comes out it'll move enough to engage with the ring gear ps I would not recommend starting it with the cover off because the cover supports the jackshaft. you need to at least have the primary cover on, derby cover can be off so you can look in if necessary

This guy don’t explain what he’s doing. If he took the Tale measure. What was your measurement? What’s the torque specification

Guy my shaft broke over 1000 miles away from home and I fixed it in someone's driveway... if you can't figure out out to replace your jackshaft from this video, then don't touch your bike and bring it to a shop. It's not rocket science.
