Cooling fans not working? The GTI cooling fan was not coming on. Today I will teach you how to diagnose and replace bad cooling fans in a MK5 GTI. If you cooling fan will not come on, the fan motor may be the issue. You also need to check the fan relay in some cars. This car has the fan control module build into the big fan.

Hi sir! at the beginning of the video you mentioned that you will show how to diagnose the fan module, but since the small fan was obviously damaged you skipped that part. how can I diagnose the fan module? Do you have another link or video or set of instructions to diagnose the fan module? Please share. Great video By the way!!! Thanks!

I had to remove the fan shroud not so long ago on my Mk6....and that exact same screw snapped off in the radiator. Luckily i was able to slowly work out the remains of the screw with a pair of screw pliers. Mine wasn't even as rusted, it just went - must get some metal fatigue from movement of the assembly.

Thanks for the video. My Mk5 TDI 2.0 radiator and fans were replaced by a crash repairer but the air con didn't work. I took it to an air con place, they regassed it, and that made it work while the car was moving, but with the fans not working, it didn't cool while idling at a stop. I looked up the engine bay fuse box diagram, and sure enough, the 10A fuse SB8 for coolant fan had failed (probably due to the fans jamming up in the collision). I replaced it and it's all working as it should.

Good video... I had to replace the large fan on my MK5 jetta last summer. The process is exactly the same, except on mine, the bottom radiator hose is attached to the fan support with a clamp, just had to undo the clamp and pull the hose back and bit and it came out smoothly and back in smoothly.

Great work as always, but you could of made it perfect by doing some "cosmetic" things.by replacing the rusted bolts, nuts, and metal clips holding the wires,or paint them to give it the fresh look, and it would be nice if you got us a video on how to replace the hood strut (even though it's an easy job) but it may be difficult for others.Thank you.

Thanks so much!! I will do this tomorrow, although mine was not to replace the fan, but rather to slide it down a bit so I can pull a nut that fell inside the fan. "If things go well" LOL well whoops I have Mk 6 GTI, yes everything applies here but woe unto you who have deeper Intercooler like my Unitronic-- you will have to disconnect the silicone hose at bottom of metal intake runner (the one with temp sensor on it) and unbolt the support to same metal pipe but not remove the pipe-- then you can just barely get the fan assembly down and out like in the video. My large fan was working so I only did the small one with an OEM fan; this is too much work to risk doing again if a dodgy aftermarket fan fails. THANKS for the awesome video!!

So the sb38 and sb34 are behind the instrument cluster? Meaning I have to pull the gauges out to check them? The thing is, my cooling fans worked just before I swapped out the engine. Now, they don't kick on. I highly doubt they're blown and I think it's a fuse problem. I think this because my radio stopped working, so I pulled that out and sure enough the 10A fuse was blown. Can you help me out with this one?

my small fan quit working with engine warmed up and AC going. i pulled the fans out from the top and popped in the new fan minimal problem. just remove air intake/snorkel tube. use a mini ratchet with any needed attachments to get out the 4 screws. holding the fan assembly in place to get in the screws by myself was tricky but possible.

I have the same exact problem with the smaller fan not working and that's causing the AC not to blow cold air when the car is stopped which means the ac compressor is not getting cooled by the smaller fan that's directly facing it. I will buy the whole unit with both fans tomorrow on ECS Tuning.

This has been a great source to understand how these two pals work on our VW. However, I’d like to seek your advice. I got my two fans replaced a few weeks back in a repair shop and I realized that there was some kind of noise coming from the front grill while at idle. After I stopped the car’s engine and checked what was probably going on. I feel the main fan is loose and that could be the reason why it’s not working properly or not working at all. I can’t really tell as the small one is doing all the job and there’s no overheating or anything like that. The blades seem to move back and forth while tapping with the finger. I’ll take the car back to the shop, but is there anything that you think I can do on my own?

Having a similar issue, my AC doesn't cool when idling. I noticed the smaller fan doesn't come on when I turn on the AC to the coolest setting. Since the small cooling fan isn't seized like the one in the video. What's the most affordable way of checking the smaller fan? Is there a video on how to use VCDS to test it?(after checking the fuses of course)

Bump old video, But trying to make the call on fans, I’ve confirmed I have a bad small fan but I also see that even if I put a headlight globe in place of the small fan the module stops grounding it, Like a bad module? But is my test invalid? Is the fan module smarter than I think, I did the same test on a b8 Passat and it continued to power the headlight globe In place of fan

Hey Charles great video as always. I am a long time subscriber from NJ. I have a question for you and this will determine if I go German or not. I love the German cars and have noticed that they are structurally more solid (doors close better and with more “oomph”). I am soon going to be in the market for a new daily driver that is a daily, also fun to drive, and had good to decent gas mileage. I work over an hour away from my house one way. I love the GTI. The way it feels, drives, and handles. I also love the golf diesel because I test drove that too but unfortunately in an automatic. So my question to you is, is the newer GTI (past 2 years to current) a reliable car? I have always heard the joke of VW meets being lit up with check engine lights. I don’t know how true that so I am asking the expert. I love manual transmissions. So having said that, is there anything I need to know about modern GTIs with and manual or modern Golf diesels with an manual that is an issue and needs constant or pretty constant upkeep and maintenance. FYI I am coming from a Japanese car where are have never ever had issues. This car or the past 4 I have owned. Just to give you my mindset.

I'm having an issue on my 2008 R32 that might be involving the fans. The large fan spins but I can't tell if the small one does, a/c works fine but large fan has got loud before, never seemed alarming. Car got hot yesterday morning when idling with a/c blasting for about 20 minutes, went up to around 220°F, went back down to normal when I started moving. It did have an engine code for P0480 and a DTC for the smaller fan (V177) having "restricted movement." I drove it again 2 times afterwards and had no issues, all fuses are fine and both fans move freely. Codes/DTCs cleared and did not reappear yet. Could this be a pending module failure? I live in Texas heat so I always drive with a/c on in 100°+ weather lol

A very good explanation towards the process and great visuals. As mentioned below, yikes! $800 for some fans does seem a bit steep. Nice editing too Charles.

I have a 2006 mk5 GTI,,,, does the fan control module run the AC compressor?

Hey man I have a fan problem on my MK5 gti! My cooling fans don't run when the car reaches operating temperature. But they do run when the A/C is cranked to max... I'm gonna assume the module in the big fan isnt working properly?

Does this fan module control the a/c compressor to kick on?

Hey man how’s it going ? I was wondering I have a 2009 mk5 Jetta with the TSI engine. I notice that only one fan works and the other doesn’t. It hasn’t been an issue so far no light no weird driving or anything like that. Is it safe to be driving like that ? Again only one fan is working

Hi, thanks for sharing. Just replaced the AC control valve in my 2006 Jetta, charged up the freon; Nothing, same crap, just blows ambient air. AC fan NOT kicking on w/ the AC switch on dash, but it Does Spin Freely by hand, nice & quiet, just doesn't come on when u push the AC button on. Do I need to bypass the high pressure switch? Had to on a friend's car to get it to start working, but that was a Corolla. How do I bypass the high pressure switch? Inspected connector at high press switch, looks fine, clean & such. It has 3 pins, so to bypass, which ones do I connect w/ a paperclip or wire? Any idea/s much appreciated. - thanks, take care
