Went to Ford, cost me $450. Got it home, still leaked. Took it back , they replaced a hose clamp. That was probably the problem to begin with. I just bought a pump I didn't need. Ford service is such a rip off.

This is a great video and it enabled me to change my power steering pump on my 1998 F150. One problem I had was getting the metal shield disconnected so I could access the pump. The bolts were rusted and when I attempted to take them off the U nuts broke. I resolved this by cutting to bolts off with an angle grinder and cut off wheel. Then I bought new bolts and nuts for not much money and all is well when I put the plate back on. Everything else went will and I will able to change not only the pump but all the lines and cooler. Thanks for a great video.

I performed this procedure this past weekend on my 2002 F-150 XL. Without a lifted truck, I found the lower high pressure bolt very difficult to access so I dropped the pump out the bottom and then it was easier to get to. Also, oddly, even though everything on this truck is metric, this original bolt was 5/8. The new high pressure line I installed was 14mm, but still fit the old hole. In spite of what he says, I still re-installed the 4th bolt into the pump. Just remember to slide it into the new pump before you attach the high pressure line. A swivel flared 18mm wrench came in very handy to perform final tightening on this connection once the pump was installed. You can do it!

Thank you for posting this. It helped me today. I remove the pulley while it was in the truck. I use a rubber band around the two half moons of the pulley tool, so this allow me to use a one-handed operation to fit the pulley tool onto the pulley shaft. Allows the half moons to stretch out while fitting around the end of the shaft. What's this on the shaft, cut rubber band with a knife and remove it. Just sharing here in case it helps someone else.

I just did this repair on a 2001 lariat supercrew. It is alot harder than it looks in this video. The fact that the truck in the video has had a body lift makes a huge difference. Getting the power steering hose in and out of my steering box was a nightmare as there is no clearance and very difficult to see. I had to drain the coolant and remove the lower rad hose to gain access.

By far the most difficult part of this job was the high pressure line. The 3" lift would help access a lot, but even with access it was a pain. Save yourself some trouble, drain the coolant and remove the lower radiator hose to gain access to the high pressure line. It will still be a fight, but a much easier fight with threading the line. This part of the job took a long time and lots of frustration. Otherwise the video was very informative and helpful. Also suggest getting the pump with the pully installed, will save a bunch of time.

Thanks for this video I have a 99 5.4L 4x4 150 didn't know the lines are normally lose I saw that o-ring on the steering gear side of the pressure hose the side that goes in the pump has no o-ring I seemed to have a flare which usually means as you tighten it the flare makes contact with something but there is no seat inside the pump. I had already bolted it up and was really difficult to use a wrench hits the pulley and the oil filter. Also found mine was missing the bolt above the large hose going to the reservoir I just figured someone replaced the pump never put it back in because it was too much work to tighten it as you said it's not required which means the pump has been replaced before I have had the truck from when it was 6 month old bought it in 2000 someone must have replaced the pump. I broke 2 PS pullers trying to remove the pulley the pump is an original ford part don't know why it's so tight ended up just buying a pump with he pulley already on it.

By any chance, are these steps similar to those of replacing the PS pump in a 1998-2011 Crown Victoria? If not, could you guys make a video showing the replacement of said pump? There is currently a lack of good videos showing its replacement.

I am not sure if my pump and/or my high pressure line is leaking. Do you recommend I change the high pressure line first, then if it's still leaking, change the pump. Or should I just change everything at once. I would rather not have to change the whole pump if it''s just a leaky line, but it's honestly hard to tell what exactly is leaking. But as of now everything is wet, fluid is coming out of the top of the reservoir, the pump looks wet, and the high pressure line looks wet. :(
@gerardoaacosta5947
@gerardoaacosta5947 6 лет назад
If your truck makes a hissing noise when you turn you steering wheel its your pump on its way out. Check your fluid first, see how it looks. Work your way from the lines back to your pump. It could be anything as simple as a loose hose/line. Then check around your reservoir, part of the power steering pump assembly in that area is actually plastic, so you could have a leaky reservoir. It may be a bit tedious but the only way to really diagnose were you have a leak would be to remove your assembly. That way you have a better visual of what needs to be replaced if you don't find anything wrong with your lines.

I decided to change the pump, pulley, and the high pressure line along with the other return lines, and of course the power steering fluid. I am just waiting for my set of flare wrenches to come in then I am going to tackle this job. Thanks for your help.

It's a PITA this truck been working on it all day today don't bother pulling the pulley off I broke my PS puller which I have never seen one on so tight, and I rented one from autozone manager said his wont break I broke it in 5 seconds with my impact gun he couldn't believe it didn't have to pay for the rental he was cool. I ended up getting a pump with the pulley already on it. Would be lot easier if I pulled the clutch fan off but didn't have the tool to keep the water pump from turning I wanted to get the shroud out of the way. I have done 80 mustang GT's and 90's pulley came off easy the pump is very easy to work on this F-150 sucks balls PS fluid all over the place.
@jameschimino8757
@jameschimino8757 5 лет назад
Clean the pump really well. Fill the pump with fluid and turn the pulley by hand. It will pump the fluid out of the high pressure orifice if the pump is any good. Look for leaks.

I took on this job last night after work .. I bought a puller kit for the ps pump.. $60 and a pitman arm puller tool for $30. I felt confidant of doing the job. Took me 6 hrs start to finish.. but had all new parts installed in 4 and broke the pitman arm tool trying to remove the pitman arm from the gear box. Was original and having 426k km in Ontario. Seized , even a torch didn't help. Having a hoist helps too ... no luck separation of the pitman arm . Had to buy a new one. BTW ford doesn't sell them anymore.. obsolete to them. Had to buy from a parts supplier. Plus I had no issue taking the pulley of the ps pump on my truck while on the engine.. there is room and same goes for removing the ps lines on the gear box. The ps pump pulley needs to be removed first to make room for the 18mm nut on the hose. My truck has the 4/6 drop. Didn't make it difficult either. Have fun and make sure you have all parts and tools Patience is nesscessary

WHILE THIS IS A GREAT "HOW TO" Video not practical. IF you go thought all that effort in changing the "OLD" broken High Pressure line why not simply change out the "OLD" pump. it is less than $100. Buy it with the new Pully already installed and save at least a hour worth of time and ton of frustration( IF you screw up taking pully off or putting pully back on you are screwed) Again GREAT VID!! just not practical if doing all that work removing the pump from the block.

Okay, so I have followed the instructions in this video to the T. I have installed a new pump because the old one was chattering and leaking from the housing. I also installed brand new hi and lo pressure lines and the steering rack itself was working prior to replacing the pump. I properly bled out the system. Why would this still not be working? How is that even scientifically possible? One would assume that if the belt is turning the flywheel that the pump HAS to be sucking fluid. This is the first time in my life that I have been completely baffled by any vehicle.
@1AAuto

+Christopher David It's hard to diagnose it without seeing the vehicle in person. We would recommend taking it to a trusted mechanic to pinpoint the cause so you aren't constantly plugging in/replacing expensive parts that aren't solving the problem

@@1AAuto So the problem was that the pump was bad. A friend of mine who is a real mechanic told me that Cardone's pumps are rebuilt in Mexico and are not reliable...1 out of every 3 is bad. I got a NOS Ford one off of ebay, put it in, and It worked fine. Still, It was the biggest PITA that I've done on the car.

My 2001 F150 4x4 didn't have a 14mm. It had a 5/8"! And there was no way I could go through the wheel well to get to the high pressure line nut!! I took out the 3 bolts to drop the pump first. Then I had room in the engine bay to use a wrench to loosen the high pressure line. And no hose comes off that easy after removing a hose clamp. Whoever designed this engine compartment should be shot. Obviously, they never worked on cars.
