In this short video I show you how to replace the rear brake pads on a 5th gen Toyota 4Runner. This is also a very similar process to change the pads on a 4th gen 4Runners as well. Something that I learnt when doing my brake pads is when pushing the caliper pistons inside to open your brake reservoir cover first. This will make the piston go in easier.

It’s ideal to crack the bleeder screw before resetting the pistons to avoid damaging HCU for the abs.

I always clean the caliper piston as much as I can with brake cleaner before I push the piston back in. You want to avoid pushing contaminates into or past the piston seal as much as possible.

Brake clean will dry the rubber seal around the caliper piston be careful doing that just use a rag and brake clean.

I just changed my brakes, your video really help me. I had to pat myself on the back when I got done. I did learn the chips go on a certain way. Lol

Great and to the point. I just bought a 2015 4Runner with 85k. Rear pads are low, front a little less than half. Watched you front brake video also, very helpful.... bearing grease is also helpful when rethreading old rusty bolts and the pins.

Great video, Tip: the metal hardware clips slide in place, just squeeze into groove and slide inwards.

Excellent step by step tutorial. Good speed and instructions. Subscribed. I’m not sure if you skipped over a step or if you didn’t have to do it. But there’s little clamps that hold the brake pads in place. I’m not sure if those have to be removed before the break pads can be removed.

Love short simple dyi videos, you did an excellent job in my opinion. it is very irritating when you’re in a hurry and seeking just a little information for new knowledge or reassurance and you have to scroll through a video to find it; which sometimes can cause ads to pop up adding to the delay. maybe mention some safety tips like blocking tires. if i missed that then my mistake.

question, I also changed out my brake pads with this same "extreme" set and put the squealer pin on the bottom of each brake pad since the box gave me 4 of them. Is that acceptable? I'm seeing differing opinions online with putting one on each brake pad vs just one each set of pads...

Great video, I did everything you did with much caution and they squeak. Took the one thst was squeaking off again cleaned it up and it still squeaks. Any solutions you may know of?

Grease the back of the pads and the forks on the caliper. Make sure the brake shield is not rubbing against the rotor.. I personally take the 4 clips off the brakes slide on and wire brush underneath them as well.

Great video but some touch ups , the hardware you need to slide the back end which is curved first into the bracket then the front end snaps in , you need to lubricate every point that the brake pads touch the bracket so they will slide freely in the hardware other than that great video good job, but my question your old pads looked good to me why you changed them ?

The pads actually weren’t too bad at all I was approaching 100k miles on them and bought them and had figured time to change but was fairly surprised and how much meat they had left. Hey . Just an fyi you should take a file and clean the rust under the hardware. Then the hardware will go in. That 1mm of rust makes rear pads stick. Also per South main auto, best to put the lube there so it stops the rust from forming

No real reason why I picked up the powerstop z36’s over the Akebono’s they both had great reviews. I personally think either would be a great choice. Thank you for watching!

@@5MinuteFixit I'll be curious to see what kind of mileage you get out of the Powerstop Z36 pads. I installed them on my Gen 5 4Runner and got about 38,000 miles before time to change. I had less pad than the old ones you took out. I do have the Powerstop slotted and drilled rotors, so that may make a difference. The stopping power is way better over stock, so that's a plus.

Did anyone else have a hell of a time getting the pads in? Also, I feel like the clips that the pads set in are grinding on my rotors. I have a small gouge in the center of both rotors that align with the clips as well as a faint scraping noise
