You didn't clean and lube the calipers slides, on a rusted caliper, on a car missing a dust shield. You never even wiggled them prove they move.

I forgot to line up that indent with the brake pad and as a result inside brake pad worn unevenly. Caliper I believe was seized because the outside pad was almost worn to the metal and I couldn't budge the piston. Was an old caliper. Often overlooked is that lining up of the pad to the piston.

Doing the rear caliper once again on my 09 vibe. They start to stick bad after a few years. I bought on Amazon a $15 tool to compress and turn the piston on this, 10/10 get this because the square tool is super annoying. **A needle nose pliers has never worked for me doing these, Im not sure why. Just a heads up.

Would like to have known that this was NOT a totally 'screw it back in' caliper piston. Screwed the dickens out of it and the piston is now so far out that there's no room for the proper tool to fit! It takes significant effort to push it back in while turning clockwise...as evidenced by the pin spanning tool designed for this style caliper. Am now frustrated even more because it won't turn either way so it could be compressed. Time for a new caliper?

I had to use a wrench to hold the inside nut of the caliper pin bolt because it just spun when I torqued the out bolt. His in the video didn't

When you spin back the piston, do the handbrake need to be off?

first step is to open the master cylinder to allow the fluid to push back..probably was cut off video

When you press the brake pedal does the piston then turn counterclockwise? If so then it won't be in the correct orientation to meet the brake pad.

Should also replace the pad/abutment clips to do a complete brake job.

Shouldn’t the dust guards be replaced as well?

This method of winding back the brake caliper was not exactly what worked for me. Close though! I needed to put pressure against the piston while winding clockwise. I used a C-clamp and waterpump pliers to spin it back, being careful not to damage the rubber boot. Or another method using oil filter pliers is shown here, which is where I got the c-clamp idea from. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wSqDP-pwj2s.html

Spun easy for me every caliber a snow flake or maybe child proof 😂
@fkarau

I can verify that! The problem is that they didn't have to push the piston back because the car doesn't need new pads. Yes the head of caliper does screw in a bit and then stops but like you said you have to apply pressure AND turn the cylinder. I got a tool loaned to me from Canadian Tire for free and it had the right fittings to make the job relatively pain free but it really isn[t easy and I would suggest getting the tool before you start. I guess autozone in the U.S. loans tools as well.

There's a tool that fits on the end of a ratchet - kind of like a borg cube from star trek. It's got six different faces with different set ups of knobs to fit in the grooves on the face of the piston. I put the caliper back on the wheel and use that tool to push and turn the piston back in place. Helps to have an assistant hold the caliper in place while you do it.
