This is the first place I go to for an automotive "how to" video. I've replaced sway bar links, bushings, windshield washer pump, pads, rotors, coolant, transmission fluid/filter, and a headlight ballast thanks to you guys. DIYing costs a small fortune in tool acquisition, but still wayyyyyy less than paying a mechanic $100/hr to do these repairs.

I do drum brakes on diesel equipment and trailers for the military, but I came here because my friend wanted me to do her brakes, and I couldn't believe that a 2014 had drum brakes. One thing I will say is that if you haven't done these before make sure not to get any oil or grease on the part of the shoes that touch the inside of the drum.
@jchumpfree
@jchumpfree 3 года назад
Just a side note. If you're installing new rear drums, remember to transfer the speed sensor ring from the center of the old drum to the new. If you don't your car will not go over 5 mph and it will display a traction control error on the dash. Been there done that on my 2013.

Typically, these videos are A+. This one gets a C, maybe. If you are just looking for a look at the setup, like I was, it’s ok. ButHe is very low energy and left out key things such as: exactly how much drag you want on the brake drums, guidance on the condition the brake drums should be for reuse, and he left all kinds of grease all over the break shoes.Always clean all grease off of the brake shoes and drums. Good day!

A long straight pick and a flat head screwdriver is a good alternative if you can't do it with needle nose pliers. Hook the spring with the pick and put the tip of the pick and insert it into the hole where the spring hooks on. Then use leverage and push the spring down as you stretch it. Then guide the spring end into the hole holding the tension with one hand(the pick)and guiding the spring end with the flat head screwdriver. Works 60% of the time every time.

My process and it may seem excessive, but it works for me as I am older and old school. I lay the new shoes on the ground and as I remove parts I put them where they belong on the new shoes. Then once every part is removed, I lay the old shoes beside the new ones and transfer the parts from the new ones to the old ones so as I look at them, I see just how they were on the car. Now I start the installation process taking a part one at a time and installing it. This all came about because when I started to do this it was many years before computers and cell phones were thought of. He said look at the other side but years ago they did not look the same as cables for the self- adjusters were on the front of the brakes on one side but on the back of the brakes on the other side and after installing things wrong, I adapted the process I described, and it worked so I have stayed with it.

I would like to know if you are a Class A (I guess it's ASE in the States) mechanic? I see way too many people impressed because they don't even know steps are being missed. That was not a professional job. You need to check the cylinder boots by pulling them back gently, inspecting them for dryness, and if fluid has collected in the boot, they are leaking and need replacing. You should inspect the brake lines and bleeder screws on every brake job. And you should always put a little anti-seize on the adjuster threads, at the very least, clean it with brake cleaner. We were taught to lube everything, even the lug studs and the dust cap rims-- then you don't end up with as many struggles when you do the job next time. The e-brake cable lever should be cleaned and the pivot should have a shot of WD40. The springs need to be replaced if coated with rust-- they get very brittle and snap easily. Took me 4 years to get my Class A license-- apprenticing was part of it. Far too many RU-vid videos from people who don't even know what they don't know.

Great video thanks. Does anyone have more detail on how the autoadjuster works? Lets say theoretically I put everything back and the adjuster was way too loose. Would it eventually over time adjust itself to be correct, or will it take manual adjustment? Reason I ask is because after doing this the parking brake is not quite strong enough, but when I make the adjuster push outward more, I can’t get the drum back on…. 😵‍💫

Andy A +, just to recap what "1A" replied, once you put back the drum when you're finished, the B. SHOES are way out of ADJUSTMENT, So, you have to manually ADJUST them, then AUTOMATIC ADJ. is there for ACTIVATED, for every time you BRAKE W/Foot pedal & using the E. BRAKE too , how ever keep in mind, that the AUTO ADJ. doesn't always work, once it is covered with Brake DUST, W/ that said you have to help it out & do it MANUALLY...

S13’s had disk all the way around.the only Nissan I seen with drums is my dads old hardbody and I figured that was just a older truck thing more so older thing.I only did them once and kind of disappointed with Nissan for putting these in new cars wth Nissan?I’m going to go google one logical reason it doesn’t have disk it doesn’t even seem cheaper to manufacture

There will be some slight differences, such as how the drum comes off, but the basic brake set up is the same. Make sure to clean the shoes and the drum. Do not put back a dirty drum on top of greasy brake shoes. Also, do you want just a tiny bit of drag. With the wheel on you should get maybe one turn if you spin it freely Before the wheel stops.

FYI to all. I have a 2015 Micra. Same rear brakes. In 2017, the self adjusters were seized and not spinning. I had to take them apart and free them up. Make sure yours are working properly. Today, I had the rear drums off again. The self adjuster on the passenger side was not seized, but is not working. No brake dust in the drum and drums spins freely. I may have to replace it. Also, both rear drums are VERY DIFFICULT to slip over axle shaft. Any ideas on how to make this process easier? Thx.

You might need to adjust the tensioner on the rear shoes as the shoes may not be spread out enough to touch the drum. This can result in sinking pedal and slack on the e brake. This may also cause that the e brake does not engage and may not brake the vehicle when the emergency brake is applied. Hope this helps!

You are not supposed to touch the pads with dirty gloves. You are also supposed to carefully clean all the parts you remove. Why would you place dirty parts back on. At least clean them with brake cleaner and scrub them carefully since they are off already. Sloppy job. If you are going to do a video, do it right. Show it the right way. Do it professional. Not with an amateur mechanic. But the point was shown on how to replace pads.
