In this video I replace the rear parking brake shoes on a 2009 Hyundai Sonata. It is a fairly simple straight forward task and is the same on most vehicles with rear disc brakes. - Enjoy!

Just had my mechanic do this repair today, because I didn't want to attempt pulling the lower control arm loose in my garage. The 2013 model is an absolute PITA! APPARENTLY they decided to farm out the caliper design & the suspension design to two different teams! Love the videos buddy!

I changed my brake shoes on my Hyundai Genesis coupe not long ago. Same exact format…took me a while to figure it out but got them in properly, adjusted them properly and now it holds my back wheels 🛞 real still when I apply the parking brakes. Love it.

I've done a bunch of Ford Expedition parking brake shoe jobs that never needed shoes at all - just needed that linkage up top freed up out of a block of rust. One truck I had to remove both, and toss them in my waste oil bucket for a few hours, then stick them in the vice and beat the everlivin' snot out of them. Looked like a lost cause for a minute, but I got them both workin as good as new again. Good to see someone that takes care of their vehicle - makes our lives a million times easier. I'd do pretty good if everyone did that! Off I go, back into the tropically humid shop ... 😁

One trick I learned when doing drum or drum parking brakes, is to put the drum or rotor over the shoes. Then for old drum brakes, push on the brake pedal. That will center the shoes so you can adjust them. For parking brake shoes, pull up or push on the parking brake lever or pedal. Same result. The shoes will center themselves. Works pretty good also when adjusting the shoe clearance.

Another great job Eric. A lot of anti-seize requested by your customer. Think about it anti-seize is made by combining grease and copper or nickle dust. When used on exhaust bolts or other very hot fasteners I think the idea is the grease goes but a thin film of a dissimilar metal remains. Because the fastener was essentially torqued "lubricated" the breakout torque can be considerably more once say plain oil has burned off. What I'm trying to say is that if you used a good quality grease like a full synthetic on non-heated parts it would be a lot less messy and just as effective. Your an excellent mechanic and teacher and as always look forward to your new videos. Thanks

Great video. I am working on a 2011 Sonata. It has 3 brake springs for the parking brake. One is on the top, side to side, a second one on the bottom, side to side, then the third goes behind the brake shoes, but from the middle to the side. I didn't notice the spring when I took off the shoes and now I am guess on which way the spring goes. On the passenger side, does it go from the middle towards the back (left)? And on the drivers side, does it go from the middle towards the back also (right)? What is strange, I have a service manual but it doesn't show the third spring. But all of the hardware kits I have looked at, it has the 3 springs. Any ideas? Thanks....

"Of course, this is a stick shift, and he uses the brake quite often!!" He either don't park that often, or he needs to use the parking brakes, EACH AND EVERY TIME HE PARKS!! I once encountered a gentleman(I am being very nice, to say the least, when I say gentleman) that never used his parking brakes, because he would put it into gear (forward or reverse, whichever the case called for) and the running gear would hold it!! He once parked it on a fairly steep hill, and allowed 1st gear to hold the vehicle!! I watched it roll backwards, slightly, overcoming the compression, and eventually rolling out into the street!! It took quite the amount of time, as I consumed two whole cups of coffee, and smoked a few cigs, before I called to warn him that the vehicle had made it to the road, and was actually in traffic!! ;-) Another day (his story, not mine) he parked in an upwards facing spot, and left in 1st gear, and the the inattentive operating booger hooker, that parked in the opposing spot, "BUMPED" his vehicle, causing it to go backwards, into the aisle way, (and therefore turning the engine backwards for the ride) blocking the driving area until the store notified him over the intercom, that his vehicle was blocking the parking lot (the other drivers fault, not his, for bumping his vehicle on a downhill parking spot, without using the vehicles parking brakes, BUT TO EACH HIS OWN!)! Great vid!! And even changing things up a little, to help accommodate a customers vehicle that had been rust preventative sprayed!! Nice!! But you didn't say "MOTHER MAY I" so I gotta UNSUBSCRIBE!! Again!! LOL

I don't know of anyone who's worn out their parking brake shoes, but that's probably because no one uses the parking brake anymore. Then again, I live in an area that's as flat as water and maybe only one in 75 cars has a standard transmission. I traded a 2007 Civic with a 5 speed for a 2014 Accord and the 25ish year old salesman had to get a mechanic to move it because the only 5 speed he "drove" was some video game he tried to tell me about. :>)

Hi from Missouri. Worked replacing rear brakes on a 6 year old Subaru WRX today. The car came from Pennsylvania, wow that car had rust! Broke off a caliper bolt first thing, bolt popped loose made a full turn and then broke. On the others when the bolt popped loose I then soaked it with panther pee and ran it back in and out a couple of times. I never have problems with caliper bolts on Missouri cars.

Just at it here today. I think my problem is not the shoes but the linkage after the cable joins the bracket that moves back and forth. Those are the rusty seized up parts. Outside the drum and going into the drum. I think you called it the actuator assembly.

all they needed was to be "burnished",a process in which you drive and apply the parking brake to decelerate the car,it needs to be done several times(in a safe place obviously),as the shoes and rotors get hot from repeated use they will clean themselves and actually start to work as designed,this procedure is part of many manufactures pre- delivery inspection prior to delivering new cars to a customer

Excellent video. Seems nothing under there changed from the 2006 - 2008 model years. In my case, about to do this on a 2008. The pad material fell off the backing pad at around 230k. Not bad. Barely used the parking brake in NJ.

probably could have blasted brake cleaner in the adjuster hole and drove around dragging the e-brake on and off... usually surface rust and road schmutz make them not hold good, that and willy-nilly "coating" inside the rotor drum, which did look awfully new!

I’ve actually got the spring done now, but now I’ve fitted everything back together, I can’t move the rotor disc around. It is so tough when I put the screwing any ideas?

haha Ken Block is a beast! M rear driver ebrake has been boarderline seized for years. 2011 Kia optima, similar. I keep having to rework it, is there anything I can swap out with rebuilt or new parts to prevent this constant issue. Now is see the rear driver brake pads clumping up and perhaps piston is toasted. That thing is a never ending issue on my car. Thanks for your video and feedback appreciated.
