I was floored when I saw you take the time to remove the old wheel weight tape and sand off the rust from the wheel hub mating surface. If I had mechanics like you in my area that I could trust to do this kind of attention to detail I wouldn't have had to learn to work on my car myself. 90% of mechanics wouldn't have bothered, keep up the good work.

I completely agree with you man, and I know you may never read this or care. I have been a mechanic for 6 years now, I started when I was 19, and I have fought tooth and nail every day of my career dealing with my superiors and fellow technicians trying to teach me and even force me into bad habits. When it comes to the 'right way' of doing things I am majorly self taught. I never had a father or anyone in my life that I could gain exposure to any of it from, and I never had anyone that I could go to for answers. I got lucky that I had the mentor that I did in the beginning and even luckier that God put certain people on my path which blessed me with the mindset to even care for such things, but I eventually managed to get all my ASE certifications on my own and have been a certified master for over a year now (I still haven't attempted the L1 or advanced level tests, but hope to one day soon.) I have been in and out of several shops both independent and dealerships on my path to finding where I'm supposed to be. Every single shop I have worked at, if I got a wheel that was like that, I spent every bit of effort I could into getting that damn adhesive off, while everyone in the shop would haze me saying to stop wasting time or just giving me plain crazy and dirty looks over it, calling me a kiss ass or over achiever. I have always been very passionate for what I do, and want to do my absolute best in every task I do, no matter how small. NOT ONCE, until JUST NOW, November 4th of 2020 at 11 p.m., HAVE I EVER seen someone have any actual knowledge or idea of what tool to use for removing that stuff easily without causing any type of scratches to the wheel and overworking yourself/costing time. I just ordered one of those 3M wheels from amazon. This channel and Eric himself, are an absolute blessing to this planet. God bless.

I agree with ratbert. One of my lower cheap ebay ball joints broke while making a u turn on a small street. Eric O, This reminds me of two times where I had the wheel fly off my vehicle. The first was a Dodge D-50 and the upper ball joint failed, the entire wheel assembly with control arms broke away and hung the truck. We slammed to a stop so hard that my friends hat and the cigarette he was trying to light were across the highway intersection we were approaching. The second was an F-150 with 35s. I had taken it and gotten a wheel alignment and when I went to work the next day (60 miles away) as I was backing into my spot at work the front right tire fell off. They didn't tighten the lug nuts enough and they worked free. I had to replace wheel studs sitting in the parking lot at work.

Had it happened to me in a Chevy van about a week after getting tires on the rear. Nothing appeared out of the ordinary then one day at about 55 mph there was a slight Rumble which got really bad fast and then all sudden my tire was passing me on the highway. The time from hey did you notice that until seeing the tire rolling away was less than 1 minutes. I was actually looking for a wide spot on the shoulder to pull over then it was too late.

It’s never a good day when you loose a wheel. I lost a set of duals with the hub and brake drum off my reefer trailer in a snow storm and didn’t even feel it. When I parked and walked around I had a big snowball around the spindle and brake shoes. Chained up the axle and went on my merry way to the next shop to get it fixed. Luckily I carried two spares under the trailer and I didn’t have to buy rims and tires.

As they get loose it becomes apparent with the amount of noise a loose wheel makes and for every single lug nut to fly off without you noticing a damn thing then the real problem lies between the drivers seat and the steering wheel. Re-torque those fasteners after a short drive: "The most common reason for a wheel to separate is failure of the fasteners, where wheel nuts fall off and/or wheel studs break and release one or two wheels from the vehicle. These failures generally occur 175 to 3000 miles and one to fifteen weeks after a wheel was taken off and put back on during some service, such as a tire installation. There is a different pattern of evidence in left vs. right side wheel separations. Left side wheel separations usually occur after the wheel nuts spin off (Figure 2) whereas right side wheel separations usually occur after the wheel studs break off Wheel nuts that were properly torqued can lose their clamping force. Some reasons are wear of paint coatings on brake drums, break up of corrosion deposits or dirt that was in the ‘sandwich’ when the wheel was put on, and wear of aluminum wheels. Fortunately there is a well-known remedy for lost clamping force. It is simply to re-torque the wheel nuts after a short amount of driving. There is no need to remove the wheels or even jack the vehicle off the ground - just using a torque wrench to apply the manufacturer’s specified torque to each wheel nut after a short amount of driving will normally cure any loss of clamping force. Although wheel separations are rare, they should be entirely preventable with re-torqueing." www.meaforensic.com/wheel-separation-accidents/

I work in England as a tech and the policy is to clean the mating surfaces of hub and wheel, add grease to hub, do wheel nuts up by hand, no power tools, torque to manufacturers specs, re torque after 15 mins. I had a wheel fall off because of I replaced front brake discs and didn't replace and torque the grub screws, turns out there is a warning from the manufacturer about this problem, the grub screws come loose and slowly loosen all the wheel nuts. When the car came into the shop and we removed the wheel after the owner put it back on, the grub screws were off and sitting in crevises in the alloy wheel. It's Renault Clio, Nissan Note, Dacia vehicles.

These struck close to home! My otherwise really good repair garage 's unskilled tire guy failed to tighten the lug nuts on one front wheel when they put the winter wheels on, the tire pressue light had gone on, I stopped and checked the tire pressures, but they were OK. A wobble began, like a flat tire, and then got worse and I stopped before it rolled off - found four of the bolts on the road, one was still in the wheel but held on by a thread. Wrecked the aluminum wheel, and a dust cover, but that was all. A friend pointed out that the tire pressue light was sensitive not to senders in the wheels on an Audi, but to the ABS system sensing something was wrong. In the fine print, in the owner's manual it notes this. A few years ago a rented Subaru lost a rear wheel due to a dry wheel bearing which cut through the axel, I was on an interestate, but felt the wobble, had slowed down in the breakdown lane, and the wheel rolled past me on the right while the car settled down on the brake drum.

Turns out the mechanic hadn't tightened the nuts. She heard rumbling on the motorway.

Our Mazda had the same thing happen to it's front tire, as I was driving it away from the garage that had rotated the tires. They hadn't tightened the lug nuts on the wheel that fell off. In the end, the garage (well, the garage's insurance company) paid for the replacement of the damaged fender and the wheel. I imagine the wheel coming off on the Subaru might have been for the same reason since the tires were recently installed, so it's interesting he's going with a low cost fix, but then again, it is a beater car.

My truck calls for 500 ft-lbs on all ten lugs per wheel. There are 60 of them on the tractor alone, 40 more on a standard tandem config trailer behind. You can tag-team it, having one guy pilot the socket over each lug while the other one does the twisting, but there's no sense trying to rush the job. For my own truck, I insist on being one half of the "tag-team". That way, I know that every lug has been torqued (or re-torqued after driving 75 miles or so). I had an incident some years ago involving improperly fastened lugs, and only by pure bull$#!t luck did I not have the wheel completely separate from the truck. It damaged the aluminum rim, the pilot flanges on the hub, the studs, and they put new lugs on just because they didn't trust the threads from the old ones. That cost a small fortune that eventually got charged back to a very unhappy tire dealer near Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but I put the brunt of the blame on my own shoulders for not demanding that the fasteners be torqued. On the positive side, I can say that I survived a 3hr delay on the shoulder of the Dan Ryan Expressway without being struck by another vehicle during the afternoon rush.

@Jason Bowman Ford trucks use hub centric wheels where the center of the hub centers the wheel, and flat based lugnuts with built in washers. others use a conical base lugnut which recesses into the wheel to center the wheel. If you tighten conical lugnuts that tight it can damage the conical recess in the wheel. in contrast if you don't tighten flat base lugnuts that tight the wheel might slip a little under the lugnuts under acceleration and deceleration, this can lead to oval lugnut holes and can loosen the lugnuts over time. The bigger trucks often use the same type of bolting system for their wheels as the newer ford pickups.
