Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! I'm a newly widowed woman. I bought this weed eater because I couldn't crank my late husband's heavy duty gas powered units. I needed some simple instructions and thankfully I found yours. My weed eater is running again! You are a blessing to me!
I just have to say, that out of the countless videos I watched, you explained this THE BEST, and made it easy for me (as a woman) to be able to use my weed eater again! Thank You for this video!!
Thank you for this this video I went to walmart and purchased a 100 feet of the 065 for $ 3.98 and i loaded just as you did ...it worked fine. I am a female and it was a simple process had no problem.
Thank you so much for the video. You made it very easy for this 68 yr old to replace the line on my weedeater. Took less than a minute and was very simple.
Love the reviews of this weedeater all say you have to buy the prewound stuff, and some say that maybe you can respool them. I looked at it and thought it has to be reusable, and thank you for taking the time to show us. I almost didn't buy one of these weedeaters, but this took my worry away.
Man, I think you so much. I just bought my 1st ever battery powered string weed whacker & needed further instructions on using it the correct way. You really helped me a lot. I really appreciate this. Will return if I need help.
Thank you so much I bought this same model and I have to manually keep opening cap to release string cause it wouldn't release with button during use. Nice demonstration now I know owl I was winding the string incorrectly on the spool
Watched this in anticipation of following your very clear and simple instructions, only to discover that my dad bought me some prewound string when my folks got the weed eater for me to begin with 😂
You make it look easier than it is to get the rows nice and tight without overlapping. I found it helpful to mount the spool on a shaft in my vice to hold the spool while winding. Do you know how many feet fit on a reel. I started winding out of a 250 feet package but it just became twisted and I had to cut it. Would have been better to pull it out measure and cut it. Thanks
I'm not sure on the exact length. Something like 15 feet. The amount of string on the spool shouldn't extend past the recesses in the plastic part of the spool. That's how to know when the spool is full.
I have this Craftsman electric 12" grass trimmer. I ran out of spool so I bought pre wound spool and replaced it. But everytime I will use it, the spool doesn't advance or do automatic feeding. I have to manually pull the string by opening it and pulling it. It's so tiring. Is there any solution for that issue? Thanks
Is there a way to remove or get in between that black space of the spool guard and the guard? I got yard string caught in there and it’s preventing my weed eater from operating.
I'm not sure which part you're referring to but a thin flat-head screwdriver sounds like the right tool. You might have to unscrew the guard and take it off.
Finally the info I needed! Thank you. Those Craftsman 3-packs are $26 at Ace Hdwe! Seems ridiculous to me when you ought to be able to rewind them yourself. Now do they have to be so precisely rewound?
They don't have to be wound perfectly but if the string isn't wound neatly, the layers of string tend to bind the string in place and it won't release all the time. So it's usually worth the extra minute or two to wind it neatly.
I have a similar one. Craftsman really needs a better way to do this. It's very simple, but you have to really take care to wind it perfectly and then if you let off the tension at all when replacing the head it can all unwind and you have to start all over. I honestly think they do it this way just to sell more pre-wound spools.
I recently purchased prewound spools that are the correct model (same link you posted as well as double checked the manual for the trimmer). They look identical to the original spool that came with the trimmer however, I cannot for the life of me get the new spool to sit correctly. Just feels like its stuck on a bump or something and that its not the rize size by like a 1/10 of a millimeter. Driving me nuts! This video was helpful so I could respool the original insert with the new string by feels silly that I cant figure out how to just reseat a new spool correctly?! Any tips? Thanks!!!
Hmmm, that's odd. Have you turned the new spool back and forth when trying to get it to seat? Or maybe there's a little bit of gunk in the head where the spool goes and you just need to clean it out? Or something stuck on the spool that's preventing it from seating properly? These are just guesses, of course, nut based on your description the new spools are either a tiny bit too tall or there's something physically preventing them from seating in position. I'm not sure what else to recommend.
I’m having the same problem. The spool looks identical, but if I stick my pinky in, the new one is tighter. The old spool goes back on just fine, but the new one won’t go all the way on. Serious design flaw, making the trimmer useless. I’ll try the self winding method, but I don’t know how long those plastic gears are going to hold up. Thanks for the video so I can at least get it to work somehow.
@@Lhogue46 I gave up and just respooled using the original one that fit and the tips in this video. Seems silly but got my yard cleaned up again finally lol
Did you buy a new spool, or just re-string the original spool? It's possible that a replacement spool is a tiny bit bigger than the original and that's what's preventing the cap from going back on. I recommend comparing the width of the new spool to the old spool.
@@FixEverythingYourself so actually it’s the cap you put on once you have re strung the spool the very last part. So the last piece that closes it it broke doing yard work. So I had to get an off brand it seems like same size. So does the spring if just won’t seem to lock in place. Once I push the spring with the circular plastic to close it. Well it just won’t shut down. Not sure what to do. If Maybe I should buy a new spool or just buy an original part instead of off brand version one.
I have the craftsman weed wacker and I also got wire unbreakable wired trimmer cannot put it on the string head is in way do you have video on how to remove the hole head and put wire head on
I bought the replacement 3 pack and even though they look identical it won’t load into the head correctly. Looks like I’ll just respoll the one that came with the weed eater.
I don't remember the brand I used. However, what's most important is that the package says "ROUND" on it to describe the string (not "twisted" or "square" or any other adjective). I have links in the Description field to replacement spools from Amazon but those include the plastic spool, not just the string.
I believe this weedeater is only supposed to use 0.065" max. Thicker string will be harder on the motor to turn and will likely wear it out much more quickly. I wouldn't recommend using the thicker stuff
Can you please explain how to operate the "push button to release line"? I don't know why this is so hard to find online :) My neighbor lady's weed eater is a similar craftsman model but corded/plug in. There's a "push button to feed line" - button, yet you can't push that button and trigger at the same time, some safety/lock feature, pushing the button...just pushes the button - I dont see any line come out, and the next time I hit the trigger it doesn't look like any line feeds out.... :) I'm used to the gas, bop on the ground while hitting the trigger auto-feed feature. She says with this craftsman it's the same, but you can't do the trigger and feed-button at the same time, and like I said pushing the button while plugged in etc. - doesn't seem to do anything. Thanks, and good video on stringing.
A tiny bit of string releases every time the trigger is pulled and the head begins to spin from a dead stop. If the string is really short, you may have to stop-start 3-4 times to get enough string to extend. There's no button that releases the string and bumping the head on the ground doesn't work, either.
@@FixEverythingYourself Hey thanks :) I saw this on my phone and meant to reply later on the laptop. Craftsman CMEST913 might be the model number, from an google-to-amazon search result. It's definitely what I'm dealing with, I just don't know if thats the model number or like an amazon sale-listing number etc. This is the link to the amazon page (below), "20V or electric". You see the picture with all the labels, the "adjustable handle".....and the "2-in-1 trimmer/edger" (with that bar that folds down)..... and then at the top: "push button feed" (user controls line with push of a button) ... but I swear when you push it the head doesn't move/nothing happens, and the trigger isn't allowed to be pressed at the same time. I'll try pushing it at a dead stop---trigger, deadstop, push button, trigger...dead stop.....etc., and see if line is weeping out, but I don't think so. I bought a Craftsman Weed Eater at a goodwill store. The motor works fine but the .065 mm line feeds out too fast. This weed eater head did not have a tension spring because it is not one of the bump feeder types. This is a corded craftsman weed eater. Do I need a new head or would a tension spring help?
That's a bummer. Did you flip them upside down to see if they go in a different way? Sometimes the spools look the same top and bottom but there's a slight difference that makes them fit one way but not the other.
I don't recall an exact length. Something like 15 feet. The amount of string on the spool shouldn't go past the recesses in the plastic part of the spool. That's how to know when you have enough on the spool.
I saw a pop-up that said .065 only? I recently got a job working a 3 acre yard the owner calls a "park" I don't want to use gas and I have 4 batteries/ 3 chargers. Can I use .95 serraded?
Craftsman recommends no larger than 0.065" string, so I definitely wouldn't recommend trying 0.095". Also, if you're maintaining a 3-acre yard, this weedeater is going to take a while to do it. Perhaps that's all you have but since this is a one-string type of head, it's much less powerful than the two-string varieties.
You're welcome. Also, I just stopped at Lowes, who sells this Craftsman weedeater, and I can't find any string of any brand that will work EXCEPT the pre-wound spools. And of course, those are more expensive than the string would be if they carried it...
I don't recall how long the total amount of string is but the key is to stop winding when the spool gets as wide as shown in the video. But it's probably about 12-15 feet of string.
I bought one of these brand new today, but nothing in the instructions tells you how the string comes out while you’re using it. How do you make the string come out when it breaks?
Just pulling the trigger and having the spool speed up will cause some string to extend. So if you need more string, release the trigger, let the head slow down or stop, then pull the trigger again.
I have this very question with mine. This isn’t a bump feeder type of weed trimmer? Some have a button I know but I was thinking you could tap it while it’s running just like many others, but it doesn’t seem to feed more line out.
No, I don't think it will fit and the weedeater doesn't have enough power to use it. Could cause the weedeater to overheat or be damaged. Not exactly sure but I wouldn't advise using it.
I bough 0.065 string with ridges around the circumference and am having trouble getting the string to feed through. You mentioned to only use round string. Could this be the issue?
Just tried to put in the craftsman RED pre loaded string, but It acts like it wont stay. Its your Battery unit. Have you come across trying to use craftsman 90 mm or xyz instead of 60 ish mm..
My edger somehow got backwards. The protective cover is on the same side as the handle. I have to hold the edger upside down and contourt my hands to use it. How can I reverse the two or one?
Grab the center black plastic piece (shaped like an hourglass) on the shaft with one hand. Then with your other hand, pull the upper red part of the trimmer out as if you're trying to stretch the length of the trimmer. This will allow the shaft to loosen a little, then you can spin the shaft back to the correct position. You mustve accidentally turned it at some point.
I can’t get my string to hold the tension. As soon as a put the cap on the spool, it just unwinds. Using 0.065 circle string and following your instructions.
Most likely the string is wound in the wrong direction. Too much string coming out is what happens. Re-wind the string and make sure it's the correct direction. If you're holding the spool upside down when winding it, it'll be the wrong direction.
You can replace the string or the entire spool that the string is wound around. I don't think the head is intended to be replaced. The string may be wound too tightly if it's not advancing.
You have to let it stop spinning, then pull the trigger and get it spinning again for string to come out. The string comes out right as the spool starts spinning after it was stopped. Just a little comes out at a time so you may have to do it a few times. If that still doesn't work, the string may be bound up inside and needs to be removed and reinstalled.
Are you referring to the flat red cap that snaps into place to close the string inside after winding? If so, those can be purchased on Amazon. Here's a link to a cap that comes with replacement spools of string: amzn.to/3Q3kkAp Here's a link to just the cap itself: amzn.to/4aKI708
The instructions say the string should be round. I haven't tried other shapes but considering this is a lower-end model, it's probably pretty touchy when it comes to the type of string.
When that happens it's almost always because the string is wound in the wrong direction on the spool. Try winding the opposite direction of however you've been doing it. You should be able to see the direction I'm winding it in the video. If so, that's the direction to do it.
@@FixEverythingYourself Yeah I made sure i was doing that. But i just realized my string is triangle shaped. I'll try the round string like suggested and hopefully that makes a difference. Thank you for the video!
Ok, great. Maybe it's the triangle string but I'd suspect that somehow the string got on the wrong side of the spool while winding (and got wound in reverse). But sounds like you know what to watch for so good luck!
My guess is that the string is pinching itself on the spool so it's basically stuck. This happens when the string isn't wound very neatly on the spool. The unit is supposed to release a small amount of string every time the trigger is pulled and the unit begins spinning after a dead stop. This isn't the kind where you bump the spinning head on the ground to get some string to release.
@@FixEverythingYourself This is a new spool I put on. I put a new one on after the other one stopped working.. while I was using it. It got to about 2/3's down. I bought the spools already wound up.
Hard to know without seeing it what could be the problem. Is it nearly new? If you can't fix it, return it. Make sure to push the battery in all the way until it clicks in place.
I swear to God, every time I go to buy new pre wound spools from Lowes, I get the wrong damn bundle, so I have to go back to the damn store and return a torn open package. I hate being that customer, but they have two types for sale and only one spool is compatible with my trimmer. It appears the .080 spindle won't fit into place, but I'm tempted to spool it myself on the old empty spindle I have
