It literally took me longer to unscrew the Diamond plate tailgate cover then it did to replace the handle and rods on my 96 Chevy. The Parts were a perfect match. 1A Auto you guys have a Customer. I will be ordering from you guys again. After inspecting my old parts. I'm glad I ordered a new handle. that was the problem. It's definitely worth getting both.

1996 chevy c1500 here -- my tailgate that was stuck up position - i tried flat blade and hammer, twisted a 2' flat blade, & tried bending a drywall spade to reach latch inside -- but couldn't get leverage. in the end the lock was mostly siezed against its channel. i sprayed it down with cleaner and lubricant and used 2 pry bars to give a little room from the inside of the bed -- the tailgate has some give in it each way so it did not bend but i did lightly scratch the inside corner of the tailgate, a rag underneath would've helped. i hammered the smaller pry bar to make contact w/ the latch and force it in -- it released it. only my plastic clip had broken, it likely was original and when the tailgate was siezed one day it popped off -- save yourself some time and do not remove handle unless you have to. i could get my rods and clips in without all the extra fuss of getting the handle out -- if yours is stuck i hope this helps. could not find a thing on the internet. once you replace keep it lubed with white lithium grease where plastic meets metal and the latch mechanism itself and it will last a lot longer.

How do you keep the latch rods from fallingoff and into bottom of tailagte while installing,,,seems there should be some type of retainer where the rod attaches to latch assembly,,today to tried installing and one of the rods fell inside of tailgate and i cant find it..i can hear it but cant see it,
Very clear concise easy to follow instructions showing all the parts necessary to do this job... you guys make exceptional instructional videos! 👍 Do you ship to Canada?
Buy a Kit that replaces ALL the parts inside the tail gate. I replaced the handle/release, after it didn't open anymore. that lasted about 18 months. then it got wore out. the springs that the latch uses get stiff over the years and cause most of the troubles here. use some masking tape to hold the rod on the latch assembly. it will keep it from falling off. good luck
I have a 95 silverado,,bought a new latch assembly kit for the tailgate,,problem is they didnt come with bolts,,,what size are they or where can i buy them,,,
The problem with my 96 K1500 is the latch chisel end rods won't pop back out to close and hold 'gate in position. Presently have visegrip in driver side door pocket to grab and lever out the left side chisel end which also pops out the right side at same time. Have tried blaster lubricant which works for a couple open/closures. Haven't tried soaking the interior with wd-40 yet. Presumably latch rod mech' is rusty somewheres.
Found another 1A-Vid' that also hi-lited probably that the probable 'latch rods pivot joint is aging out / sticking ! So time to actually remove the cover plate, interior rubber liner and more bolts, as the vid host proceeds thru, tah have a look, ..... interim blow-in some '40 vs blaster'. :-)
I have a 1987 brand new Ford tailgate. I want to mount it on my garage wall, (walls are sheetrocked) and be able to ""open"" it to sit on like a bench. How do I do it??? Kathy
My tailgate is a obs 99 k1500 5.7L. It has no access panels into the tailgate interior and the rods fell off my latches by the tailgate. I cant move the latches with a screwdriver to wedge it open either. Please make a response to help
What do you do if the tailgate is closed and it seems that the rod isn’t opening the tailgate. What do I do now to open the tailgate to change the tods.
+James Dawson You may be able to pry the tailgate down and get to it that way. You can also take a look further on RU-vid to see if anyone else documented their issue and how it was resolved.
Mine did the same. Try using thumb and fore finger and go under the handle and pinch the rod end together. If not try the screwdriver method as in the video.
You installed the rods backwards when you actually showed it on camera, then fixed them when you went to put them in...... You put them through the bottom of the latch, not the top
