How To Replace The Backup/Reversing Valve For Polaris Pool Cleaners

Has the Backup or Reversing valve on your Polaris Pool Cleaner failed? Typically, every few minutes, it's supposed to open and lift the entire cleaner and transport it to another place in the pool. It's an especially important part because sometimes the cleaner can get stuck in a corner and can't get out.
Replacing the valve is easy. Unscrew the hose nuts and save them, then wiggle the hoses off. Make sure to check the orientation on your new valve to make sure it's connected the right way. Put the hose nut on the new valve, then slip on the hose, and then tighten down the hose nut. Do the same on the other side, and the valve has been replaced!

I was hoping you was going too cut open the old one so we could see it's guts ! Great vid!

There was never anything wrong with the original one; this new one is a spare. I did open it, to take a look, since disturbing an old seal could be detrimental, but a new seal, not so much. Basically inside is a "waterwheel" that is turned by the force of the water coming it. That drives a geartrain with about 5 or 6 gears in it to produce the timing effect, and it operates plungers to block off water flow and allow water flow from the other port.

What distance from the unit should the back up valve be on the hose? I heard someone else say 18 inches but yours as well as mine needs to be more like 4 feet.

You've noticed exactly what I've noticed. Where yours is, is probably correct, especially if it does it's job and pulls it around every now and again. If you have time, I highly stress that you search my channel for "Pool Opening". I talk about many of the same things where you get totally different answers depending on who you ask, and every single person thinks they're right.
